Lady Johanna Meadows pales by the shock of finding herself on trial, the Levalles, Laena, mostly Laena once she puts two and two together. Bitch! I will utterly destroy you! Laena gets the message of her cold eyes, as does half the court. Though the dices have been loaded against her, unprepared as she is, the accusers have at least hastily put together witnesses and evidence, though the wealth of it suggests that someone, House Levalle, surely, have prepared for this moment.
Participation in this event can either be done by influencing the crowd or giving testimony.
Influencing the crowd Awareness (Empathy) TN 9 Status (Reputation)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 12 And either one of: -Persuasion (Convince)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 12 or Deception (Bluff)+Chivalry Virtue TN 12 -Persuasion (Incite)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 9 or Deception (Bluff)+Chivalry Virtue TN 9
You can argue for the following options (mark rolls accordingly): -Guilty/Innocent, your DoS are added as VP towards that outcome. -Lenient/Harsh. Lenient: if found guilty, reduce the VP of the guilty side to determine punishment by your DoS. Harsh: if found guilty, increase the VP of the guilty side to determine punishment by your DoS. You may combine the two (such as harsh and guilty, or lenient and guilty) by increasing your TN's by 3.
-If a member of your house gives testimony (Abelar counts as member of no house), only DoS after the first are counted. -Picking the incite option requires you to discredit someone giving testimony (including Johanna), typically leading to -2 disposition. -Arguing for guilty makes you suffer -2 disposition with Lord Lucas, Lady Johanna and Ser Mark. -Default disposition among nobles (Abelar is at -2, Attractive grants +2) is applied as a modifier to the tests. -Each Critical Failure: -1 Influence, -1 Chivalry/Virtue if using incite, -1 VP. -By taking -1D on the tests, you may attempt to influence anonymously, requiring you to pass a Deception (Act) TN 13 to hide your identity.
Give Testimony Awareness (Empathy) TN 12 Status (Reputation)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 15 Persuasion (Convince)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 15 or Deception (Bluff)+Chivalry Virtue TN 15
A testimony must be for guilt or innocence.
-Only Alliser (will be NPC'ed if required) and possibly some NPC's have truthful testimony to give (Persuasion), others must give false testimony (Deception). -Accusing Lady Johanna of murder grants +1D on all tests (and requires false testimony). -Testifying for guilty makes you count as an accuser and -3 Disposition from Johanna Meadows, an additional -3 if giving false accusations, an additional -3 if accusing her of murder, half this amount (round up) for Lucas Meadows and Mark Edgerton. -Each DoS grants +4 VP towards guilty/innocent. -Each Critical Failure: -1 Influence, -1 Chivalry/Virtue, -4 VP if giving false testimony, twice if critically failing deception.
Special: -A DP spent/burned affects all tests equally. -A point of glory or influence may be spent alongside influence/testimony to add +3/+6 VP
Consideration for benefits/drawbacks -Authorative grants +1 for tests to convince. -Famous grants +2 for all tests. -Orator grants +1D to persuasion/deception, reduce TN's by 3. -Zealot would trigger to compel pursuing certain objectives (Harshness for Abelar, Guilty for Alliser) -Charismatic +1 to all tests. -A vindictive accuser must test in order to not call a trial by combat if the outcome might lead to a harsher penalty. -If a trial by combat is called, those with the vainglorious drawback must generally test to avoid (but may volunteer to their preferred side). -Connections allows witnesses to be found by succeeding on a TN 12 knowledge(streetwise) test, taking this action counts as giving testimony, but at a -1D penalty and DoS on the streetwise test caps the number of DoS that may be scored. You must expend your daily use of connections to use this while also giving testimony yourself. You may take -1D on the Streetwise test to cover your tracks. If tracks are covered, critical failures will not cause other penalties than negative VP.
Consequences: Lady Johanna is charged with usurpation of Lord Meadow's seat and (depending on testimony) also for murdering Lord Meadows. -On the first count, if more than half the VP are for guilty, this will be the verdict, she may plead for mercy and be granted forgiveness (but Ser Gwayne will become Lord Meadows). But if more than 65% are for guilty she will be forced to take holy vows as a septa, if more than 80% are for guilty, she will be forced to join the silent sisters. -On the second count (if applicable), if more than 75% of the VP are for guilty, this will be the verdict, she may plead for mercy and be allowed to join the silent sisters, but if more than 90% are for guilty, she will be executed instead. -The accusers (if any) and Lady Johanna may demand trial by combat in an attempt to overturn the result, innocent turning guilty and vice versa, if the verdict already was guilty and the champion of the accuser wins, half again the votes for guilty is added to determine punishment. -If a trial by combat is demanded, any knight may volunteer to stand, the number of VP each side gained and which side demanded trial determines the quality of NPC's willing to volunteer for either side (trying to up the punishment from silent sisters to execution would probably stir a few renowned knights to draw the line). Champions will be allowed the necessary time to recover from injuries sustained in the melee. -It is likely that Lord Leo will take responsibility to have Lucas Meadows fostered if Johanna is found guilty.

Malyk was prompt to the proceedings. In truth he had little interest in Lady Johanna Meadows. Was she a murderer? Hard to say. The trial was as much politically motivated as it was a search for justice, and justice was in very short supply these days. Most of it had been orchestrated by Lord Durwell, with the complicity of his own Lord. That Lucas was a bastard was probable. If he was not, then only the Seven could help him now. Hopefully they would, as he was easily the only true innocent in the whole affair.
That Lord Levalle had made a deal with Lord Durwell was not in question. Whether this was to expose an injustice or sacrifice an innocent woman he did not know. No-one was omniscient. One just needed to muddle through as best one could. What was beyond doubt was that the wolves had come for Johanna. Whether she deserved it or not wasn't even really relevant to these proceedings. When the wolves came, it mattered not whether the person deserved the sharp gnashing teeth, be that in the wild or the courtroom.
That the white stag didn't deserve to die didn't make it any less dead. Lightning hits the guilty and the innocent alike. The world is not fair, and Aegon's poison continues to sicken the land. If you lied to your son about his blood, if you tried to make your son into something he wasn't for your own power and vanity, you are many things, but 'innocent' is not one of them.
Still, if so many had their finger on the scale of justice, it seemed only right to balance that scale to a degree. A life in a Sept was not a bad one. Had she been a man she'd be facing the Wall or worse instead. Her son would survive, wounded but perhaps wiser. Perhaps he would even be better off. The only thing worse than the lies we tell others are the lies we believe about ourselves. The only constant in this world was that if adversity did not break you, it made you stronger. Without adversity there was no growth, without growth one merely existed and was useless to both themselves and others.
So, quietly, he mixed with those present. A soft word here, a mild comment there. He said nothing about her guilt or innocence on either matter. The Seven would pass their judgement on that score. He only attempted to soften the blow should it fall. As one of his Aegon's many victims, she deserved at least that much. If she truly was a murderer, she would pay for it in the afterlife, if not in this life.

Lord Marq, ordinarily reserved in his opinions appears livid about Lady Johanna's threats and attempts to silence her accusers, and spread nasty rumors against them, his good friend Laena in particular, attempting to brand her as the murderer of Ser Vernan Pyre. His apparent sincerity is such that most people forget that the man surely would have a strong interest in seating Ser Gwayne. He certainly also inspires Lady Ysilla to follow suit, with a much less subtle approach, loudly calling for her to be locked up in a deep and dark dungeon and the key to be thrown away. Eldon Merryweather bestirs himself in a rather blatant effort to "get back" at Laena for her role in Lord Willem's "Mummer's farce", Ser Normyn and Lady Maegelle comes to Lady Johanna's support, likely because they were lumped together on the accusation-wagon with her. Lord Yelshire does not have any strong opinions if she might be guilty or not, but if she is, an example must be made out of a liar and adulterer.

Ashara did not know if Lady Johanna was guilty or innocent. Nor did she whether the lady's son was trueborn or a bastard, great or otherwise. She also really didn't care. Lady Johanna had threatened Laena's children. For that alone she must be punished. A wolf may not be as frightening as a dragon, but that didn't mean they couldn't tear your throat out if you threatened their pack. Words were - to Ashara's mind - Lady Johanna's most serious crime, and words were the most fitting of punishments. The Silent Sisters. Let her live, aye, but in silence. Let her stew in her own rage in a cage of her own making. Let her unexpressed burning desires for vengeance consume her from within. Let her suffocate in knowing that she had brought this upon herself. 'Our Words are Steel' - to her father that meant that their promises were unbending, unbreakable. To Ashara, it meant that words were weapons and armor, no less useful - or deadly - than armor and sword. The surest way to prevent an opponent from destroying you was to destroy them first, so utterly and thoroughly that they served as an example to others not to fuck with you and yours. The best defense was a good offense... and so Ashara found herself embellishing upon what Laena had told her of her conversation with Lady Johanna. Tales - false of course - of the the gruesome things Lady Johanna had said she would do to Landar and Sylvina. Dreadful poisons. Thrown live into a pit of ravenous hounds. Suspended in iron cages over low flames so that their skin would slowly blacken and the baby fat under their skin would render into tallow. Ashara's imagination for horrid punishments was far more vast than her willingness to put them into practice, which gave her much fuel to add to the fire she was stoking under Lady Johanna. History lies voluntary Vindictive test to shape narrative: 5d6k4 13 FAIL. OOC note: I am fully aware that this line of thinking is quite contrary to things Ashara has said elsewhere. That is in part because of the Vindictive failure, but also in part because Ashara is more passionate than logical. Influencing the Crowd I was going to go for just guilty, but guilty/harsh makes more sense with the vindictive fail. Also note that I am assuming Laena will be testifying, so only DoS after the first will be counted. History - Vindictive Resist - Will (Dedication) - TN12: 4d6 15 Whew! Was really worried I'd Vindictive myself into self-destruction. So I'm not forced into calling for a trial by combat should she be able to be punished more severely. [In terms of IC chronology, I'd like for this to occur after Alliser and (hopefully) a Maester's testimony, but I'm posting it now, so it's up. If it's before a maester testifies about Lucas's family history, I'll have to change things around.] "I stumbled across the knowledge of Lord Lucas's ancestry by sheer chance - the same information you've heard earlier from the maester." Today, Laena is not the shaken mother, nor a raging dragon, but a woman and mother firmly clad in mental armour, determined to see this through. "Asking around, I heard rumours about how it could have come about, and whispers of a fortuitously-timed death. After discussing the matter with a few lady friends, I decided it was best to drop the matter. "That brings us to this morning. Lady Johanna accosted me, utterly mad with rage. She saw my revealing of the truth as an attack against her son. She demanded that I publicly recant my testimony, and claim that I was blackmailed into it by Ser Aladale Levalle - implying Lord Levalle was behind it all. She said that since I'd 'gone after her child', as she saw it, if I didn't do as she said, she considered it 'fair' to come after mine." She swallows, the first sign of nerves she's shown. The next part is clearly unpleasant to recollect. "She said that, according to the gossip that sprung up in the wake of my discussion of the matter, I knew how she dealt with threats to her son, and my children wouldn't fare any better than her husband had." Her hands whiten as she grips the arms of the chair she was testifying from. "It is always difficult when a lady is accused of a horrific crime. It goes against many of the protective instincts noble men have. But if you let her sex blind you to justice, it is my children who will pay the price." Nothing to massively shake up the trial, but enough to solidify her credibility, building up the walls closing in on Lady Johanna. Septon Abelar's reputation may have suffered of late, but nothing will stop him from speaking at a trial. And speak he does. The dark-eyed septon stalks up and down before the assemblage, speaking of how the Father's judgement will cleanse the sinners with hellfire, how the righteous must silence the unholy, and how the kinslayer is cursed by gods and men. He favors sending Lady Meadows to the silent sisters if found guilty, though he expresses little on the subject of guilt. His certainty only shows its cracks when he briefly touches on whether her tongue should also be ripped out, but he moves on quickly without resolving what he favors on that question. If anyone was expecting an ounce of self-awareness, outwardly at least, they are disappointed. Irony has no place in matters of right and wrong; black and white. Inside, the septon is a bit more confused. Father, show us the truth so that we might strike down this sinner with mortal justice. For the sinner deserves flagellation and chastisement. I suffer it every night. It is holy to despise sinners, which is why I feel such anger inside. It shows that I have holiness in me yet. I will prove it to you again tonight, when I take another pound of flesh from the groveling penitent. Please, strike this sinner Lady Johanna just as I flay him night. He deserves it, so--wait, she deserves it, which is what I meant to say. Lady Johanna's face darkens as she understands only too well what her fate is going to be, to loose everything to that bastard, seduce by Lord Marq. No! This cannot stand. "My Lord! She declares defiantly. "It is clear that in this court filled with snakes and liars, there can be found no justice by the laws of men, I demand trial by combat!
Knights wishing to stand as champion may offer their blade to either side (mark which one in dice rolls), can be done privately: -For each rank in Agility, Animal Handling, Athletics and Endurance beyond 3, gain +1 to the tests, for each rank of Fighting above 4, gain +1D to the tests. +1 for each three jousting victories. +3 for each point of glory won in the melee. +2 for each of the following benefits: Berserker, Long Blade Fighter I&II, Talented(Fighting), Shield Mastery, Armor Mastery, Tough (NPC's may have other benefits that also gives a bonus). Status(Reputation)+Chivalry TN 18 Persuasion(Convince)+Chivalry TN 18
-The one scoring the highest DoS offering their sword to Johanna will be selected by her (tie-breaker according to narrator whims). -Critical Failure: Will not be considered by Johanna and -1 influence. -Being picked as champion: +1 chivalry -Defeating the opposing champion: +1 glory
Laena may select any volunteer as her champion, however with a few special considerations: -Picking a non-Starkwood character that either suffered a critical failure or scored half or less the amount of DoS as the highest scorer: -1 virtue. -Picking a champion who scored 6+ DoS: +1 virtue. -If her champion wins: +2 influence, if her champion loses: -1 influence.
Drawback considerations: Vainglorious generally triggers (may chose which to offer to stand for, can do both but that is not compelled) Furious would trigger if you are not selected to instead try offer your services to the other side. Romantic triggers (because Laena has virtue 3+ and Johanna does not) to compel volunteering for Laena.
Notes: -The general opinion of the crowd is that Johanna is guilty. -Whatever effects the outcome will have on the balance between fire and blood are very much uncertain. -The trial by combat will take place after any injuries and wounds have been healed.

OOC: In case it makes a difference to anyone's decision on if/who to stand for, having asked Father, the oft-referenced hereditary information on Lord Lucas *was* provided as part of the trial by an independent maester, so it is now not merely an accusation, but has actual hard evidence behind it.

Honestly, Daeron didn't know what to think. He sat through the entire trial and was pretty bored by maesters referencing family genealogy and timelines of conception and birth, but when the two women began throwing out accusations of murder and lies it started to get interesting. By the end, he joined the cohort of knights offering their swords to fight for truth. Although he didn't know who was telling the truth, he liked his half-sister more than some woman he'd never met before and a trial by combat offered him a chance to show the fathers of his prospective brides that he was strong enough to protect their legacies.
