"My Lady, I will marry her, my mind is made up! I am deeply sorry, from the bottom of my heart, I am, but I must follow where it leads. Lord Karl tries to apologize, but it shines through that he has been absolutely smitten by the Lady Alena and cannot bear the thought of being with her. "My dear little Amerei could not be brought out of bed this morning, crying until her eyes went dry. And you say that you are sorry from the bottom of the very same heart of yours that made you abandon your sense of honor?" Lord Karl studies his feet as if chastised by his own mother, even though he is a head and a half taller and with at least twice the girth. "I will have you come to your senses, my lord, I will see you beg forgiveness from your betrothed, and I will hear you recant your words and uphold your vows, my lord." Karl clenches his fists, his very being wants to say sorry, but he is a man of passions, and these passions must be obeyed. "My Lady, I am truly sorry, but I cannot do that"Lady Kyra's face darkens, an icy cold frown forms upon her face, she is a beautiful woman by any standard, but right in this moment her terrible visage of cold fury is as something taken from the most frightening tales fit for the darkest night of winter. "Then we must answer this insult done to our house, if only there was a noble and gallant knight who would be willing to stand to repay the insult done to my daughter." Lord Karl's eyes first widen with surprise, but he quickly reasons that this he should indeed have expected, his face then lights up with glee at the prospects of the glory to be won facing one of Lord Eldon's Blackguards. "I will of course not deny her that honor, my lady". As if on cue, and to the concern of all who have a fondness for the fiery young redheaded lord, it is indeed one of Lord Eldon's Blackguards that steps forth, Ser Rennifer Waters matches Lord Karl in size and strength, but any knight with a realistic notion of each man's prowess knows that a duel between those two is unlikely to be a question of who wins, but more a question of whether or not Lord Karl survives. "I have heard all words that have been spoken and my honor demands that I offer the wronged Lady Amerei my lance in support of her just cause if she would see fit to make use of it" At least he can speak the proper words, but every shred of evidence suggests that this man is a knight in name only.
Anyone might react to the developments, or volunteer to stand for either party. Any attempt to influence anyone requires an audience test (TN 16 for Kyra, TN 22 for Karl, disposition increases may circumvent requirements), generally only knights will be able to convince Karl to let another stand for him.

D8 Insult to Injury - Romantic TN 12: 3d6 11 - Fails, is compelled to act Lord Willum had made a good impression on Ser Roland, but a knight's oaths had to come first. A true friend told you when you were in the wrong. Ah, perhaps I was too protective of my own honour in escorting that young lady home, not to mention whatever part that hooded scoundrel had in the tournament's kidnapping.
He knew of Ser Rennifer Water's skill and violent reputation, and declared his willingness to stand as Lady Orme's champion out of both duty and a desire to prevent further outrage. Oddly, if he were to defeat his new friend he might save his life in doing so. However, despite publicly volunteering, Roland was unable to win a direct audience with Lady Orme to press his case. With all of the clamour only men and women of greater fame and rank were seen in person, another painful reminder that he needed to forge his own place in the world or risk being left behind. While his skill as a champion tilter might raise some eyebrows if Ser Rennifer was selected over him, it would not be entirely unusual for a house to choose its own sworn sword over a more talented but outside knight. D8 Insult to Injury - Audience TN16: 3d6+7 12 - Cannot get a direct audience with Lady Orme

You can always react, but in order to have a shot at influencing either of them, you need to roll high enough status (and specify which you're trying for because different TN), then you have to enter intrigue. It's not supposed to be easy.

"Balon! Dearest of all my friends! Come to wish me good luck in vanquishing this mummer's knight?" Karl's enthusiasm and high spirits is just wrong.

"I wonder if they will try and kill each other now or wait for a larger audience." commented Malyk blandly.
They colorfully dressed Seneschal stood to the side, arms crossed, watching the spectacle unfold. "I always wonder why injured parties seek blood. Coin and influence seems infinitely more useful." He seemed to be talking more to himself than anyone around him.
+2 Disposition from Attractive.

"Septon" It is difficult to tell whether Kyra simply is a bitch or so frustrated and angry that she forgets the usual courtesies. "Have you come to remind this...this lord about proper conduct for one anointed with the seven oils, taken the vows and accepted the holy charge of knighthood?"

Lady Kyra is refreshingly forthright--so much so that Abelar must needs employ more subtlety than his emotions would otherwise demand.
"My lady, I have anointed many with the seven oils, and led many more in their vows." He speaks powerfully, so that the crowd can hear. "No holier charge has been borne by men since the days of the Warrior's Sons. And we have fallen so far since then." Abelar begins to pace before Lady Orme. "At this tourney, we have seen murder. Licentiousness! Knights who would quicker lift a tankard, in some den of sin, than a sword in service of a righteous cause. Knights who would chase the alluring curve of a bastard maiden's backside than honor a betrothal sworn to on holy oath!" And Alena Flowers has debauched so many that Lord Karl would accuse himself if he takes issue with my words . . .
"But not all is lost my lady. True knights still walk among us, steadfast in honor, piety, and valor. Steadfast in the lists." Karl Willum fell in the prior round, did he not? Turning dramatically on his heel, Abelar points to Ser Roland Cordwayner. "There he stands, Lady Orme. Ser Roland Cordwayner. Captain of the melee. Battle-hardened. Unquestionable in his chivalry. Your champion, if you will have him." Abelar chooses not to address the issue of Ser Rennifer Waters, hoping that the contrast with Roland is obvious enough.
Lady Kyra +1 disposition with Abelar.

Summary - R1: Success Read Target, R2: 1 Damage, R3: 4 Damage Balon walked up to Lord Karl and shook his hand vigorously. "Someday I'll out drink you my lord." He eyed the man up and down, "Where do you store all that wine! Do you have a hollow leg?" Balon's laugh disguised his intention. As he studied Karl he knew something was off. His normal drinking and bravado had gone too far this time and it seemed as if he actually believed he loved the Levalle slut. "You don't need luck good friend. You're the mighty Lord Karl! If the Lord of the Kingsguard can barely escape you what chance does this blackguard have?" A good chance. And he is far less noble than Ser Tywin. "I've placed a wager that it'll take less than five swings for you to end it." Balon became a little more serious, "But does it need to come to that? Is Westeros ready for a married Lord Willum?" The tone was jovial but this was the segue to his true purpose.

"My dear Amerei would be most honored if men such as Ser Roland would lift their voices to show the realms that it's true knights speak out against the injustice done to her" She mentions nothing of whom might be chosen as champion, however.
Abelar can either do simple intrigue (ID 12) to convince her to let Roland approach to plead his case or he can attempt to engage her directly in standard intrigue if he feels like it. "Hah! They will sing about when Lady Alena WILLLUM was wet!" Karl slaps Balon so hard on his back that all the air inside his lungs wants to come out all at once. "Have you not seen her? Her perfect shapes and forms? The very image of the maiden herself, I must have her image in the sept repainted for that one is mistakenly blonde" He laughs at his own little jokes, mothers would have found him adorable if he was no older than he acts like. "Westeros were never ready for me, married or not, nor will it ever be!"
Objective: Friendship Free Awareness: 3d6 10 +1b to non-influence action. DR: 2 ID: 14 Composure: 10/12 It's not really kosher to deliberately start out with another technique and then switch to the one giving you the desired result, also the +3 disposition bonus for him being friendly goes to *his* rolls, the bonus to your persuasion tests is determined by your disposition towards him, so it looks like 2x1DoS. Charm (+1b on first): 7d6k4+6 26 2#6d6k4+6 24 23 That's 4, 3 and 3 DoS, for 12-4=8, 9-4=5, and 9-4=5. So 18 composure, you taking frustration? Or just call it a yield of him getting +2 disposition out of you? And Balon's prayers that he'll live....

When Karl slapped his back he leaned forward and winced, "By the Gods are you trying to injure me? Ya worried we might face each other in the melee so you're trying to hobble me in advance?" he laughed with his friend. It felt like Karl was making a mistake by setting Amerei aside for Alena but he found Karl convincing. Why wait for Amerei when Alena was ready and willing? "I just want to know one thing. Have you thought this through?" he paused. "Are you thinking with this head or that head." Balon pointed to Karl's head and cock. "Because if you're sure it's Alena you want I'll stand with you."
Balon will yield. +2 disposition from me to him. If I can get one from him that'd be nice.

"It is my heart that is doing all the deciding, my head is simply thinking that it will be coming along for the ride" He grins. "And if that was all I wanted, I could have just had her then and there, no lady can resist the allure of the Willum!"
"But my life is like a song, and in all the good ones, the most beautiful lady in the word is always as pure as the maiden herself when wed to the dashing hero!"

Roland bowed to Septon Abelar, recognising the famous Septon's holy word and reputation had prevailed where his relatively lowly birth had been insufficient.
For Lady Orme he is more formal still, dropping to one knee. He spoke with fervour, still compelled by his knightly oaths rather than considering any political ramifications of his actions. Despite her family name, she was a Merryweather by birth.
[OOC: failed Romantic roll earlier in thread so Roland is compelled to do the honourable thing and fight against his friend. As noted above, driven by Drawback so happy to directed differently by narrator.]
"My Lady Orme, your daughter has been grievously wronged by one who swore a knightly oath."
"On my own honour as a knight, let me take up lance and shield on your behalf and do what I can to restore your family's good name."
The Septon had already described Roland's recent deeds and reputation, so there seemed little need for boasting of such. Unless the Red Lion, Redtusk or some other great champion stepped forth, Roland was one of the most skilled champion's Lady Orme could hope for, and the Septon had vouched for his character.
