Remembrence
The mood in the sept is much more subdued than the splendor of the knighting of the day before, the light of the sun through the man tall glass windows fall upon the body of Lord Jon Hightower, washed and prepared by the silent sisters, garbed in his most splendid clothes, he seems peaceful, as if asleep. Around him, the knights of House Hightower has been standing vigil all night, chief among his son Ser Abelar and his nephews Ser Raymun and Ser Dennis chief among them. Others have joined them as well to show respect for the departed lord, including both princes having taken turns to represent the king, Ser Daemon Blackfyre, Lord Tyrell and many more of high and low birth have also spend part of the night in silent vigil. Septon Janos leads those assembled in the morning in prayer and remembrance, and there are many who wishes to speak of the great life that this man has led, hand of the king, Voice of Oldtown, Beacon of the South and Protector of the Starry Sept among other titles. His widow, Lady Melara stands motionless, draped in black, along with his other children Quenton, Alerie and Terrence and his daughter-in-law, Lady Rhonda holding his grandson, Lord Brynden, the new head of the family. Some wonder who will be appointed regent of the boy, Ser Abelar surely, but he is a young knight, it feels as a single poisoned chalice has brought a family that once was considered more powerful than the Tyrells to a place of obscurity.
Special: Chivalrous Knights that partakes in the vigil for Lord Hightower may gain +3 to all tests in this event for each point of fatigue accepted (though the -1 penalty ordinarily applies, making it an effective +2), these points of fatigue will affect all tests during the Hunt or Conclave, as well as any rumor related tests.
Challenge Status (Reputation)+chivalry/virtue TN 15 (Famous applies) to be allowed to speak during the ceremony, there is no consequences for failure. Roland Cordwayner may automatically succeed.
Make the following tests when making a speech, adding chivalry/virtue: Language(Breeding) TN 12 Cunning(Memory) or Knowledge(Education) TN 12 Persuasion(Convince) or Deception(Act) TN 12
Special: Orator gives +1b on all three tests.
Consequences: +1 Disposition towards you from members of House Hightower per 3 DoS Success on all three tests: +1 chivalry/virtue +1 Influence per 6 DoS -1 influence per critical failure, and all rewards will be forfeit.
Twist: You may chose to use Incite or Taunt (mark in orokos) instead of Convince. If so, the consequences are altered as follows: You do not gain any chivalry/virtue or disposition increases Incite: +1 Fire if succeeding on all tests. +1 influence per 3 DoS instead of 6 DoS, become known as a supporter of fire. Taunt: +1 Blood if succeeding on all tests, each DoS is added to the count for influencing blood through rumors, +1 influence per 3 DoS instead of 6 DoS, -1 Chivalry/Virtue, -3 Disposition towards you from members of House Higthower, become known as a supporter of blood.
Turn: The Hightowers will take a dim view of anyone trying to play politics over his death or otherwise disrespect the dead lord, satisfaction will most likely be demanded in the joust against any who so do. Any Knight (that remains respectful) may volunteer their lance for House Hightower in this matter.

When Lysette Starling stepped up, no one was sure what to expect. The Starlings and Hightowers had virtually no real contact. Lysette had done her homework though, and began with an account of the many good things the Lord Hightower had done, many of them astonishingly obscure. She spoke with an emotional force that was unusual, tears brimming in her eyes. Her appeal was not one of sorrow though, but rather a meticulously constructed statement of the strength, the compassion, the honor and noble disposition of the former lord. By the end of it one might have been forgiven for thinking he should have been king.
Total: 11 DoS
+1 Virtue +3 Disposition from Hightower +1 Influence

Ser Roland stands vigil for much of the night after allowing himself only a few hours of sleep. Such feats of endurance were not unknown to the man after hard campaigns against the treacherous Dornish, braving exhaustion and heat to combat elusive foes. While such devotion in paying respects to the dead would normally have lent his words enough weight, Roland spoke uncommonly well that grim morning. The Seven that are one are close here, and I cannot let them down, he thinks, touching his seven pointed star necklace as he begins his speech. When they come, his words are of family, loyalty and knighthood. While the late lord Hightower was no renowned jouster, he was still man enough to take to the lists and Roland esteemed such bravery, having tilted with the man on occasion. It was as well Ser Roland spoke movingly and with authority, for his speech might otherwise have been thought bland for studiously avoiding politics. Instead it was a stirring tribute to one of the Reach's great families. By the end, the simple grey tunic he stood vigil in could have been mistaken for Hightower livery, such is the familiarity and feeling he speaks with. [OOC: Roland automatically succeeds at the Status (Reputation) test. Remembrance: Knowledge, Persuasion (2 Fatigue + Chivalry): 2#3d6+10 23 23Remembrance: Language (Breeding) (2 Fatigue + Chivalry): 4d6k3+10 23Roland is Tough and ignores the penalties from Fatigue. Total: 9 DoS +1 Chivalry +3 Disposition from House Hightower members +1 Influence (not sure if we pool our House successes here for Influence - as I think Lysette has accidentally included the status roll, which I think might be excluded from the Consequence calculation)]

Aerion stands vigil for a portion of the evening, doing his duty as a knight to watch over a lord of the realm. Even though he didn't know the man personally, any knight, a lord besides, deserved respect in death. That he was taken by poison and not in battle or old age is a point that anger's the young knight deeply. He requests permission to speak on behalf of the dead lord to the Septon residing over the event, and once granted the stage, he speaks of honour and duty, and the vows upheld by the man as a knight as well as a lord of prominence. He speaks to his legacy and heir, the new Lord Bryndon, and how the new lord will do his grandfather proud. At the end of the speech, he gives one final statement, speaking directly to the young Lord. "A boy becomes a man when he must, not when he wishes. Sometimes it is too soon, sometimes it is not at all, but a man you are now. Today you become a Lord. Through honour and duty may you bring light to cast away the shadows that bring us here today."
Taking one point of fatigue: Remembrance - Status (Rep) + Chivalry + 1 Fatigue vs. TN 15: 5d6k4+9 26 - 3 DoS Remembrance - Language (breeding) + Chivalry + 1 Fatigue vs. TN 12: 3d6k2+7 13 - 1 DoS Remembrance - Cunning (Memory) + Chivalry +1 Fatigue vs. TN 12: 2d6+7 15 - 1 DoS Remembrance - Persuasion (Convince) + Chivalry +1 Fatigue vs. TN 12: 4d6+7 24 - 3 DoS Consequences: +1 Disposition of House Hightower +1 Chivalry (2) [ OOC: Do the DoS of the status test count for total DoS scored? If not, only +1 disposition and no influence. Answered below.]

“Chivalrous knight, respectable Lord, but also husband and loving father of five children and even grandfather. This and more was Lord Jon Hightower. His reputation preceded him. Duty, decency, reliability, honour, dignity, respect: these are all qualities that he not only held in high esteem, but practiced every day during his time on this earth. Irrespective of any political leanings, we should all honor his memory and pray for strength, comfort and courage for his loved ones to face the days ahead as well as loving memories to forever hold in their hearts. As such we gather here today to remember and commemorate his life, let bid him farewell as we mourn the loss of a great man.”With that, Aladale bowed to the Hightower family and left the speaker’s pulpit. Lord Alliser waited patiently, listening to the talk of Lord Hightowers knightly virtues, caring father. He was dressed in somber black, befitting a eulogy, but he never rose. Something kept him from standing up when he saw an opening, but the seven only knew what it was. day 3 remembrance (JH) status rep + chiv TN 15: 6d6k3+3 14

Septon Abelar rises on Septon Janos's cue, and delivers a homily weaving together House Hightower's storied history with the chivalrous traditions of the Reach. He touches only briefly on the subject of the assassination, perhaps understanding that the Hightowers would not think it polite for him to ignite the somber ceremony with talk of hellfire. [D2 Remembrance] Status (Reputation)/Famous: 6d6k5 23 (success)[D2 Remembrance] Language (Breeding)/Orator: 6d6k3 13 (1 DOS)[D2 Remembrance] Knowledge (Education)/Orator: 7d6k4 15 (1 DOS)[D2 Remembrance] Persuasion (Convince)/Orator: 7d6k4 16 (1 DOS)If Septon applies to any of the above (and I think there's a strong argument it should, given the religious nature of the event and the faith's role in it), then I score 2 DOS on each of the last two rolls instead of 1. Total: 3 DOS (or 5 if Septon applies) Result: +1 Disposition from House Hightower, +1 Chivalry/Virtue (only relevant if I later count as chivalrous or virtuous); (result is the same regardless of whether Septon applies)

Ashara did not know Lord Jon. Or really, anything about him. That didn't stop her from standing up and speaking about him. She had a role to play, and being given a platform to do so meant she would do so. "The Stranger has come for Lord Jon, but while we may be sad and miss him, we must remember that for good men like Lord Jon this is a blessing. The Seven blessed Lord Jon in life, and he will be blessed in the seven heavens. We feel his loss, and we mourn as is right - but we should also be glad for Lord Jon, now basking in the light of the Seven." Remembrance Status(reputation)+virtue: 4d6+5 19 vs TN 15, success Remembrance Language(Breeding)+virtue: 5d6k3+5 19 vs TN 12, 2 DoS Remembrance Knowledge(Education)+virtue: 4d6k3+5 16 vs TN 12, 1 DoS Remembrance Deception(Act)+courteous+virtue: 5d6k3+2+5 21 vs TN 12, 2 DoS Two rolls just 1 shy of another DoS, and 1 DoS shy of 6. Frustrating! Alas, such is the way things go. +1 Disposition towards Ashara from members of House Hightower +1 virtue

After all the pomp and circumstance is done. After all the speeches made and kind words spoken, honest or not. After all the tears shed and the mourners gone, Malyk enters the Sept alone and stands before the Stranger, laying a single white rose at the statue's feet, the edges of it's petals tinged with red and orange.
"Sorry. I think I failed you." He whispered softly. "I heard the music changing, but I didn't realize the song was yours."
He sighed. "Well, you should be happy now. You are with Garth. I'm sure Ser Abelar will take very good care of Brynden and he will grow into a fine Lord that will make you proud. Your song is not over. It will echo for many years to come. It will reside in the hearts of others and they will sing it for you, perhaps not as well as you, perhaps better. You may no longer be singing, but your music lives on."
He pats the statue of the Stranger affectionately. "Take good care of him." Then turns and leaves.
[OOC As much as I think I would succeed on the rolls for this event, I don't think it's narratively appropriate or in-character for Malyk to do so.]

Post by Cleyton Bolton on Jul 23, 2018 1:26:52 GMT 1
Cleyton feels like does not have to speak over the dead in this case, but he still shows up to pay respects in silence and contemplation on how the Stranger can claim ones life at any given time. "He must have been a great lord for all those attending seem to be important people, and if lady Ashara is here as well, I'm glad I made the right choice to come and show my respects"
Cleyton remains in silent player and contemplation for some time, before leaving not wanting to seem like a hypocrite looking for favor, only demonstrating his respect for a great man.

Post by Mikel of Harroway on Jul 23, 2018 7:29:04 GMT 1
Mikel had not made the decision to stand vigil for Lord Hightower for any sentimental reason. Two thoughts had led him here. The first was simply to be a part of it, not that it would be memory he would look back on fondly. Secondly a vigil was the perfect place to be alone with his thoughts. Of course there would be others there but a vigil was not a social affair. Much had happened on the second day and being here gave him time to think on those things. He knew things were only beginning with Otho and he wondered how far it would go, and how it would happen. After he played through as many scenarios as he could, from Otho's squire giving him an iron tipped lance during their joust to Otho and some of his followers setting upon him in the street, his thoughts turned to his conversation with Laena. The arena of words was taking an interest in him regardless on how he felt about it. On and on his thoughts swirled through the night. When morning came and the service passed -during which staying awake was far harder than through the night - he longed for the excitement the hunt promised.
[Taking 1 point of fatigue for +3 on all tests]

Titus had not known the man. He had known about him, as anyone in The Reach but he had seen the man die and no one, all the least a Knight should die like that. Standing vigil for the man was the only right and honourable thing to do and Titus did so. Standing in silence for the larger part of the night. It had reminded him of his knighting, Septon Abelar had anointed him the seven holy oil and he had stood all night, thinking and praying. There was a silence and a calmness in the sept which had moved him, not to tears but to a peacefulness, a sense of serenity. It was the same this night. It was a softspoken young man with heavy eyes that stood up and spoke. His words where brief but sincere. I never knew him but looking around... the amount of right and true knights that had holds vigil for him says more of him than any individual man ever could. Or at least not me. Be with the Gods in peace my lord. +2 Disposition from members of House Hightower +1 Chivalry +1 Influence
+2 points of Fatigue
