Daeron did not know Lord Jon, nor was he even sure who Lord Jon thought should be king; however, the man was a proper lord, a good knight, and he was murdered in cold blood. No true knight could let such an act go unforgiven and such a man unmemorialized. After standing vigil for hours with scores of other knights and lords it was time for the funeral. After permitting those closer to Lord Jon to speak, Daeron took a moment to say a few words: "Lord Jon Hightower was a true lord and knight. He served his King and his people, but most importantly he led his family to glory. The Hightowers are a great house and under the protection of their knights they shall continue to be the Voices of Oldtown and honorable leaders here in the Reach."Although it was a short speech, it was probably the best moment of public speaking that he's ever given. Perhaps it was sleep deprivation from his all night vigil, perhaps the Seven guided him with invisible hands, but when it was time for Balon to speak he felt inspired. " Today we say goodbye to Lord Jon Hightower. The Seven Kingdoms will long remember Lord Jon as the heir to a weighty legacy, a champion for those who had none, the voice of Oldtown, and a lion of the Reach. But for those who loved him and ache with his passing, know Lord Jon by other titles he held: Father. Brother. Husband. Grandfather. Uncle." By the Seven I need a glass of water, " Lord Jon survived hardship that would have broken a lesser man." Balon was referring to the death of Jon's first wife and son (among other things), " And it would have been easy for Lord Jon to let himself become bitter and hardened. To surrender to self-pity and regret. To retreat from public life and live out his years in peaceful quiet. No one would have blamed him for that. But that was not Jon Hightower. As he once remarked to Lord Gormon, 'Individual faults and frailties are no excuse to give in'. " Balon felt the need to wrap things up before he inevitably put his foot in his mouth, " Deeds, not words, is the motto of House Blackbriar and it is through deeds that we honor the memory of Lord Jon. The next time you find yourself challenged or face a difficult decision ask yourself, what would Lord Jon do? If you do and act accordingly then Lord Jon will truly never be gone."

Post by Ser Donnel Blackbriar on Jul 24, 2018 20:53:12 GMT 1
Ser Donnel is dressed all in a muted black, much unlike the shining leathers and gleaming armor his squire usually has to polish for him. All these people, fool, you will only embarrass yourself. And for what? He might have been a good man, but he was a man of politics, pimping whores for Aegon the unworhty to use. But his family deserves it, I am not one to judge the transgressions of this life. The Seven will measure him fairly. Ser Donnels feels faint, and his stomach is a hard knot as he walks in front of the assembly. He avoids all eye contact on his way up, and as he turns to face the crowd his knuckles whitens as he grasps the podium. "The ways in which candles get snuffed by the errant winds are hard to comprehend indeed. Last night, the life of a good man was taken too early. I suppose our solace should come from how he is in the fathers golden hall..." Ser Donnel pauses for a moment. He had went through the seven pointed star last night, he had built his short speech in his head, going through it again and again until he dreamt of this moment stick to what you read, nobody cares for your opinion.Although Ser Donnel has studiously avoided eye contact thus far, he glances to the Hightower family, and locks eyes with the confused child, put on a pedestal in his time of grief, and his heart breaks. Ser Donnel lowers his voice substantially, to a warm bass that speaks only for the benefit of the tiny lordling who looks so lost. "The new always follows the old. I have no doubt your grandfather would have preffered to stay by your side as you become the man you are destined to be, but the Stranger beckoned that it was his time to leave, and he heeded the call of the Fathers halls, for he knew that such a strong boy, will grow up to be one of the roses of chivalry." Ser Donnel then looks to the rest of the family and bows in recognition, before he walks back to where his family is standing. Too personal dammit, A family like the hightowers does not care one whit what an old fool like yourself think The voice in his head admonishes, but Ser Donnel can finally supress that voice of negativity for a while. I Did the right thing.

Resist Speaking at Remembrance: 4d6k3 13Addam had never know the late Lord Jon, and therefor was unqualified to speak about the man. Besides this was a time to pay one's respect, not earn glory off another house's sorrows. Still it was expect of Addam to at least attend and pay some form of respects for the great man. So he did, but left as soon as it was proper to do so, he did have a hunt to prepare for anyways.

Where most Lords, knights and ladies that steps up to speak does so respectfully, a few decides to be less courteous. Ser Quentyn Ball is the first of them, and by far the least subtle as he remarks how the snakes who surely would have dipped their venomous fangs into a lord leading the fight against their vicious ways now speak with forked tongues to his honor. Lady Helicent Cockshaw cannot help but making snide remarks about how poison is the weapon of Dornish and Women in a clear allusion to the Queen herself. Mya Rivers almost manages to stay on the side of propriety, almost, but she slips up here and there, mostly by emphasizing such virtues as Lord Hightower never was particularly known for, and those his detractors often criticized him for. Lady Victaria Rhysling tries much the same, but not quite so subtle. Ser Barth Dunn and Lord Martyn Stackhouse resort to more straightforward and respectful baiting of the opposition, clearly intent on gaining glory to themselves at the expense of letting Lord Hightower be laid to rest. The Knights will stand for themselves, while the champions of the ladies must accept to defend their words with their lances. Turn:Any knight* may offer his lance to satisfy the grievances of House Hightower. (Generally not available for those already having a duel in the first round of the joust) *provided he did not try to play Fire/Blood politics, in which case he may expect a challenge) Test: Status(Reputation)+Chivalry TN 15 (vigil bonuses applies, add total DoS over the three tests made as part of the speech if applicable.). Highest DoS scored gets first pick of opponent, it's allowed to opt out without consequence, as there are more than enough NPC's of high prowess volunteering. Knights to ride against (and their ranking): Barth Dunn: 3 (Blood) Quentyn Ball: 3 (Fire) Uthor Cockshaw: 4 (For Helicent, fire) Darren Crane: 3 (For Victaria, blood) Garth Redwyne: 2 (For Mya, blood) Martyn Stackhouse: 3 (Fire) Special considerations: Roland gains +2D for being the champion of Lady Janna. Donnel and Roland gains +2D (regional favorites). Balon, Titus, Aerion and Mikel gains +1D (local favorites). True Knight is applicable to give bonuses in an ensuing duel as if it is a trial of combat for a rightful cause. Honor would demand of Roland (as per drawback) to volunteer as he is Lady Janna's champion, and Vainglorious would kick in if not volunteering lance and not taking a duel against a knight of same or lower ranking in the joust where applicable. Consequences:Those who successfully defeat one of these in the joust gains +1 chivalry, +1 glory. If one of these knights manages to emerge victorious from their duel, the side they support gains +1 score.

Roland glanced at Lady Janna, attempting to look supportive. He strode over to the new Lord Hightower and kneeled, though he was but a boy. Given the circumstances, he addressed the house in general to avoid causing a scene with the lad, looking to Ser Abelar as the likely leader. "I beg you, let me silence those that would disrupt this holy occasion," he said without rising. D3 Remembrance: Status +2D+2D+Chivalry+Vigil+DoS: 7d6+19 48

Remembrance, Hightower Grievance TN 15: 4d6+18 26, 3 DoS*I already know I can't participate but wanted to post anyway. _____________________________________________________________________________ Balon had wanted to make a political statement during the funeral. While maintaining the vigil he'd rehearsed what he was going to say a dozen times at least. But when it came time for him to speak he balked, deciding it wasn't the appropriate time to convince people of the righteousness of the Blackfyre cause. When other people, including Fireball, used Lord Hightower's funeral as a bully pulpit to promote their causes he was glad he had chosen a different path. When Victaria Rhysling spoke Balon quitely seethed with rage. He already didn't like her due to her being a staunch Blood supporter. That fucking cunt. The nerve of that bitch to speak like that. She'll hide behind her skirt and let some knight take a beating in her place. This will not stand. Following the funeral Balon made a beeline for the Hightower family. With the new lord being five, Balon shifted his eyes from the young lord, to the widow, and Ser Abelar in equal measure. " My lord, this affront by Lady Victaria can not stand. I know I've already accepted a duel for the first day but if you can find it in yourselves to stay vengeance for one day I will defeat Ser Darren (Crane)."

Lord Alliser raises an eyebrow at Baelon's full throated attack of Lady Victaria. Good Gods, boy. You keep up your slander and I doubt you will make it to see the war between bloods and fires.

"If only his son were more receptive of the teachings of his father" You had best watch you mouth Alliser, your son is just as far ranging from the tree as this father's brash young man.
Speaking of shameful behavior, I still need to speak with Ser Imery about his behavior from yesterday as well.

Following his father’s lead, Titus kneels in silence, his head bowed, eyes fixed on the ground, away from his brother Balon. As Titus already has a duel coming up I leave the consequences of this up to the Narrator. But he has made himself available. I believe Honor-bound demands it. Preferably against a Fire supporter if.

Lord Luthor Mullendore finds his way over to the Starlings, ostensibly to greet his old friend Lord Willem, and this must be his lovely daughter! Lysette might find it somewhat suspicious that he managed to time it perfectly as things starts to heat up, with her father and most of the companions stepping forward to lend their lances to grant House Hightower satisfaction for the insults delivered against them, he pretends to not have heard her reply to a question, so that he might lean forward so that they might speak directly into each other's ears. "My Lady should keep her ring secret, hidden and safe. If none knows that she has it, the better."

Lysette, already torn between staying to see if everything would be all right, and gathering up the courage to sneak out to try to get a 'maester costume' together, was caught off-guard by the appearance of Lord Mullendore at her side. She blinked at him for a moment, trying to readjust. What ring? Then she remembered.
Oh yes! That ring.
She gave him a flustered smile and glanced around quickly. "No offense, my Lord, but it's not a thing I planned to brag about. It's not quite in line with the reputation I try to maintain."
Lots of things went on in such parties, after all. Nothing she'd gotten involved with, but even suspicions made dark clouds.
Then it occurred to her. Lord Mullendore would not have come all the way over here just to warn her to guard her reputation. And there was something in his manner...
The startled smile turned into a worried frown. "That's...not what you're talking about. What's wrong?"

"Another was given it's like, and she called dangerous attention to herself, though none seem to know who she was behind the mask, only that she has a certain ring. It would be best that none knows that my lady received one, and that she makes no attempt to escape her guardians." Whatever Lysette might think of it, Lord Willem had decided that two of the companions should always be close by, wherever she went.

[D3] Rememberance (Grievances) Status TN 15: 4d6+5+2 22 - 2 DoS
The ceremony was not holding his full attention. When the others in the Sept gave a strong reaction at a speech, whether for being moving or offensive, it would draw Mikel's attention back to where it should be from whatever it had drifted off to. He kept any reactions to those speech's to himself until the end of the ceremony when he saw various Knights moving forward to the grieving family and taking a knee. It took a few moments for him to understand what was going on. When he did considered whether or not to offer his own service. I suppose if I did not my presence in the vigil was for nothing. He nodded to himself before rising and making his way to where the other Knights had knelt.
Mikel found a place and made what he felt the necessary eye contact with the new heir, family members, and the priest before taking a knee.
[OOC: If this works out with what Mikel's situation will be on D4 great, if not I understand. He is willing to be set against anybody though he hopes to be placed against the most venomous and disrespectful speaker.]
