Septon Abelar takes note of Daena Roxton as the knighting ceremony comes to an end. After allowing for her to finish up exchanging pleasantries with a few others, and no doubt some knights as well, he moves to intercept her. "My lady, could I beg a word?" The sun catches her hair just so. If Balon manages to spit out Blackfyre's manhood in time to woo and win her, I must needs keep the engagement short. Abelar's rule was always 'as great a distance between dancers as possible; as short a distance between betrothal and wedding as possible.' Best not to leave matters of sin and damnation to chance.
After Daena greets him, he cuts to the chase. "Lady Daena, I must be frank in all things. I have been asked to learn of your virtue, temperament, grace, wit, and skill--all in service of a possible betrothal. So tell me about yourself. What brings you joy? Which verse of the Seven-Pointed Star do you rely on most oft in your daily life?" He does not name the suitor. She might surmise it is Balon, but he must keep alive the alternatives, if possible. A mystery man is always better than the real thing, especially when the real thing is as hot-headed and dumb as Balon.
Passive Awareness (Deception): 18, 20 if this is an intrigue where Septon applies.
Edited in her proper title, as Abelar would not make this mistake.

"Is that so?" Daena gives the septon a quick look of recognition. "Well, just today I think I have to rely upon words found in the book of the mother of "He who by ill intent brings injury upon the good reputation of another...". I wonder, good septon, is this not a conversation that would be a waste of both our times?"
It's not an intrigue until one has been started. Also, she should be addressed as Lady Daena or My Lady, she's a noble after all.

The septon smiles with his eyes, if not his mouth. She understands honor and decorum. Balon will find no succor here. "My lady is discerning. But perhaps you might benefit from the exercise regardless. Another septon singing your praises would surely burnish your virtue to an even higher sheen in the eyes of your worthy suitors." My word is not without value . . . perhaps she will speak to me to win me over, if not my wine-sodden charge. I can tantalize Balon with the details, then sting him with the barb of her rejection. A just lesson.
I edited my first post to properly reflect her title, which Abelar would not have messed up.

"A septon offering to sing my praises?" Daena tilts her head to the side. "It may be an imprudent observation to put in words, but even septons appears to have motivations a lady sometimes may need to be wary of."

Abelar's face hardens into an imperious mask. "My agenda is written in the Seven-Pointed Star and no lady of purity need fear it." Besides, what could she lose by displaying her courtly wit and discussing her pastimes? "Do you have a fear of the faith, my lady?"

"No, not fear, only caution. Men of the cloth are as fallible as men of the spurs. There are shining examples of course, but many do not live up to them. With respect, good septon, I know not which you might be."

You would dare question me, harlot?! I will ruin--no, there is a better course."Your caution is noted, and I will not press you further. But before I withdraw, I humbly ask that my lady identify her septon or septa to me so that I may make the necessary inquiry forthwith . . . unless my lady believes her septon too may lack purity." "Septon Unwin would be the one to talk to if you are that curious." She doesn't seem to care either way, just mostly unwilling to be interrogated by a man she does not know, renowned septon or not.

"My thanks. May the Seven watch over you carefully." Abelar withdraws to seek out this Septon Unwin.
Can we run my interaction with Unwin in this thread?

Abelar seeks out Septon Unwin, whom he has not met before. There are many different types of man of the cloth. Let us learn his measure.
When he finds him, Abelar wastes no time in approaching. "Septon Unwin, might I have a word?"

"Good septon Abelar, but of course." Unwin is unseemingly rotund for a septon, or any man for that matter, plump cheeks and friendly eyes. The sort of visage saying soft and harmless. Exactly the opposite of Abelar, but such men could just as well have sharp and perceptive minds as the thin stern ones. And easier to approach by the layfolk.

Abelar clasps the man's hand. The Lord of the Seven Hells may wield a pitchfork as tall as a man, but even a regular fork can do just as much damage in the hands of a glutton. Let us hope Unwin can still manage to kneel, the better for asking forgiveness.
Outwardly, he betrays nothing, aside from his usual intense zeal, as well as a bit of annoyance. "Well met, septon. I have been asked to learn of Lady Daena Roxton's suitability for marriage--her virtues and talents, as well as the more mundane details of her personality. But when I approached her, she was loathe to reveal anything. House Blackbriar did not exactly cover itself in glory last night, and I expect that was on her mind. I was hoping you could assist me."

"And why would she want to immediately answer such questions to a man she only knows by reputation?" Unwin does not seem surprised. "It seems as if every knight passing by the Ringfort makes it a habit of asking after her in the hopes that they might court the future Lady Roxton, if she were to entertain the hopes of all who would see themselves as her suitors in this place, she would not have time to do anything else."
"And if your interest in her is on Ser Balon's behalf, then you would be wasting your time."

"A maiden has few higher duties than preparing herself for marriage." Gritting his teeth a bit, Abelar lets the point go so that the septon can move on and tell him what he needs to know. "But I understand she must be surrounded by suitors. Now I did not say I was here to inquire on Ser Balon's behalf alone. House Blackbriar has other sons, as well as sworn swords of Caswell and other houses."
