For some, which knight wins the joust is of a secondary concern to which knight wears which lady's favor, scores of the latter are preening in their silks and velvets, trying to catch the attention of handsome knights, of capable knights, and that rare special breed of handsome and talented ones which are the most coveted class of all. Hopes will be enkindled, hopes will be extinguished. Romance is in the air for some, glory and prestige is on the mind of others. Heartbreaks and jelousies are sure to follow.
Restrictions:
In order to partake, you must first declare your presence here: greatbastards.boards.net/thread/1015/phase-2-whitewalls-tourney-event
To partake in Catching the Eye, you must be unwed, not be betrothed and be one of the following:
-Knights that have enrolled in the joust (without needing to pass through qualifiers).
-Ladies qualifying for virtue.
Others:
-Characters that are married/betrothed generally will have the choice made for them, not asking for the favor of one's wife/intended inflicts -1 Virtue on her, if she denies it to him inflicts -1 Chivalry on him. (Note: This event is watered down, so riding for the honor of a lady and such doesn't apply).
NPC participation:
Each player (whether partaking or not) may nominate an NPC to be featured in this event as suits the narrator's whims, otherwise NPC's will typically only act as triggered under Rivals.
Alternative participation:
Characters that does not test for catching the eye, may instead endorse another (functions as an assist). NPC's will as a rule not do this.
Catching the eye
Make the following tests, for each step above average a character is considered to be: +1D (Below Average is -1D):
Status (Reputation, Breeding or Tournaments*)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 12
Persuasion (Charm or Seduce)+Chivalry/Virtue TN 12
Using seduction will be noticed, it carries no direct consequences, but it may attract unfortunate attention.
*Knights only.
-Total number of DoS determines how high in terms of "desirability rank" that you can aim for:
8: May woo the legendary.
6: May woo the good, may challenge for the legendary.
4: May woo the nice, may challenge for the good.
2: May woo the average, may challenge for the nice.
Less than two: May woo/challenge for the average.
-Critical Failure: There are always someone overlooked by everyone else.
-For each Disposition Rating above (below) neutral a character is towards you, your DoS counts as 1 higher (lower) for the purpose of vying for their favor.
-For each step of wooing answer in the matchmaker event above no, your DoS counts as 1 higher for the purpose of vying for their favor. No reduces it by 2, a NO! makes it impossible.
-A political* no answer in the matchmaker event typically reduces effective DoS by 1, and a NO! by 3.
-A political* answer in the matchmaker event that is higher than the wooing result typically increases effective DoS by 1
-If you rode with a lady's favor in the black tourney (without her demanding it back), your DoS counts as 2 higher for the purpose of vying for their favor.
-If you crowned a lady as Queen of Love and Beauty in Phase 1, your DoS counts as 2 higher for the purpose of vying for their favor.
*Scions are known to sometimes defy such wishes.
Wooing and Challenges
You may select one character at or below the desirability rank as indicated by your DoS to woo. Unless subjected to rivalry, this character will give you a favor to wear, or agree to carry your favor.
You may select one character at or below the desirability rank as indicated by your DoS to challenge for. This functions exactly as if rivalry is triggered.
You may chose whether to attempt to woo or challenge first, if you lose the rivalry contest (if there is one), you may then attempt the other.
Rivalry:
In the event that one character is sought by multiple others, it is resolved as follows:
Vying for a knight's favor:
-The ladies involved engage in intrigue, taking turns to influence the knight, the knight takes no actions, but have separate composure tracks for each lady.
-If the knight wooed one of the ladies, she gains +1D on all tests.
-For each desirability rank the knight is below that which a lady could have aimed for, she gains +1D on all tests.
Vying for a lady's favor:
-If two knights compete for a lady's favor, the standard option is that they face each other in the first round to settle the matter.
-If more than two knights compete for a lady's favor, a similar mechanic as for ladies vying for a knight's favor may be employed to single out the two top contenders. Other solutions may be possible.
-For the purpose of a second woo/challenge attempt, you only count as having lost the rivalry contest if you are not selected as one of the two to face off against each other. If you lose the match without being eliminated from the joust, you gain the full disposition reward and half (round up) of other rewards.
PC vs PC
The mechanics should generally be used if a PC is seeking out another PC, signifying the effort spent. A participating PC may also expect to attract NPC attention in accordance to the percentage chance of their desirability rank (subject to narrator whim).
If two (or more) PC's are aiming for the same character, things may get trickier.
Special:
-Characters aligned with Fire/Blood gains +1 Effective DoS when seeking character of same faction, -1 for characters of opposing faction.
-Spending a point of Influence or Glory: +1D on Catching the Eye tests.
-Spending a Destiny Point: Automatically gain an 8 DoS result on Catching the Eye, ignoring everything that might say otherwise.
-Burning a Destiny Point: Automatically gain an 8 DoS result on Catching the Eye, automatically win all rivalries, ignoring everything that might say otherwise.
Rewards:
Having gained the favor of another character grants the following:
+2 Disposition if less than +4, +1 Disposition if between +4 and +6, otherwise no change.
+1 Chivalry/Virtue and +1 Glory for each "desirability rank" above Overlooked of the character whose favor you secure.
Ladies gains +1 virtue per point of glory won by their champion in the joust, all of which is lost should he crown another as Queen of Love and Beauty.
Married/Betrothed characters gains +1 Chivalry/Virtue if showing favor to one another.
Benefits/Drawbacks considerations
Attractive: +1D
Blood of Valyria: Gain +1 effective DoS to your catching the eye results.
Charismatic: +1 also applies to catching the eye tests.
Sponsor: If nominating your sponsor to actively participate, he will assist you or a character of your choice (no effect if seeking characters of his opposing faction, double the effect if seeking characters of his faction).
Furious: If involved in an intrigue under rivalry, a character with sufficient status ranks to initiate simple taunt intrigue may attempt this to interesting effects.
Lascivious: Triggers if doing wooing/challenging, on a failed test, you must use seduction.
Prejudiced (Various): May trigger, mostly if a character of the target group seeks you out, or an opportunity to challenge one arises.
Proud: Triggers if you would assist another or receive assistance, if you fail the test, the attempt to assist fails.
Vainglorious: Triggers, on a failed test, you must aim for characters of the highest ranking that your DoS allows.
Vindictive: Anyone beating you in rivalry contest counts as having slighted you.
Supreme Arrogance: While not inflicting a true penalty, it is appropriate to act as if your catch the eyes tests are higher than they are by the same amount as the penalty to awareness tests and act accordingly (attempting to woo/challenge above what your DoS allows is pretty much failure)
Zealot (Power): Triggers, on a failed test, you must nominate a family member to actively partake and attempt to influence them into aiming for a politically astute match.
