There are four types of NPC's to be encountered in Great Bastards.
Special Characters.
These are usually at least on par with PC's in competence, some may be slightly weaker, but they also include characters that ordinarily cannot be matched by PC's without the use of destiny points. Special characters are identified by having a portrait. Typically, a number of special characters will make appearances in events, and these are the most likely to involve themselves actively in the story. They are otherwise primary characters. Only special character will take a drawback to gain a Destiny Point to burn to avoid certain death or a similar debilitating fate, and this will generally only be done by the narrator if it is deemed more interesting to keep that character active in the story. Though the narrator always reserves the option to upgrade another NPC to special status by doing this.
Primary Characters.
These are usually on par with PC's in competence, though with a few of their number being highly challenging to face. On average they are probably slightly weaker than PC's. They may take injuries and wounds, and may have destiny points, benefits and drawbacks. Most characters that are mentioned to have survived to be mentioned in other works (such as Hedge Knight) generally are included in this group and have been given Destiny Points, though they are often otherwise not any more capable than secondary characters.
Secondary Characters.
The majority of characters mentioned by name in the settings thread are secondary characters, most of them have stats derived from templates amounting to at most 210 ability XP and 80 specialty XP, though a few have abilities/specialties of higher XP costs. These can take injuries, frustration and fatigue, they do not have benefits/drawbacks other than Head of House or similar. Some few secondary characters may have an ability rank at 5.
Tertiary Characters.
While some characters mentioned by name in the settings threads are tertiary characters, this classification is generally reserved for NPC's not deemed important enough to list by name. Most of them have stats derived from templates amounting to at most 100 ability XP and 30 specialty XP.
Unknown quantities.
The universe of NPC's is lacking in details the further away from Highgarden one goes, the list will be expanded as demanded by the story. There may also at times be special and primary character which are deliberately not mentioned in the game settings section, but almost all special and primary characters yet to be listed are at most on a behind the scenes list of characters that may be added to the story at some point.
