With the melee raging all around and Ser Otho Bracken in the thick of it, Ser Mikel's mind is drawn back to his service in the Riverlands many moons ago...
Out of the mist came three figures, two in the mail and yellow tabards of House Bracken, sharp halberds in their hands. The third sat astride a horse further back, yet made no move to join his fellows. Instead he merely gestured towards Ser Mikel. The mists rising from the Red Fork made it hard to pick out his heraldry, though mercifully he lacked Ser Otho's mass. "Take him." Bracken Guardsmen

There was no question in anyone's mind that Otho was not going to forgive and forget. Once the trial had concluded Mikel thought to collect his squire and ride straight away. But there were too many of his men, and they were everywhere, and it was obvious that they were watching him. He stayed in an Inn filled entirely by Blackwood men and their banner men who had stayed for the trial. He and Harold left well before the sun rose and did their best to stay off main roads and get out of the city.
The darkness coupled with a thick fog to aid his evasion. Once in the forests outside the city they paralleled the road south from well off to one side or the other. The navigation proved difficult and often Mikel would call a halt and Harold, a boy of twelve, would manage the horses while he crept on foot to see how near or far they were from the road. Twice now they had heard men passing nearby. In those moments they froze, careful not to make any noise. He did his best to care for their horses too, knowing his own had been pushed hard this tourney. While they mostly rode they had also walked their horses from time to time and even taken a few brief breaks.
Suddenly they heard a horse moving nearby and the clink of armored men. They froze hoping to be passed by once again but their luck had run out. "Give us space Harold and be ready to flee as we spoke of." Mikel got his shield on and armed himself as they closed in.

Initiative orders Frynk the guardsman Mysterious Knight Mikel Wat the guardsman The first guardsman comes lunging out of the darkness but overreaches, his poorly aimed blow deflecting off Mikel's shield and harmlessly on to his armour. The knight sits back for now, his shield hand almost lazily resting on his pommel even if his other hand grips a battleaxe tightly. Happy to see his men wear Mikel down? Watching for some gap in his foe's technique? A hint of fear? None could say. LA1: [D11] Yesterdays Battles - Standard Attack mounted: 9d6k5+4 24 v. TN 7 = 4 DoS = 24 damage - 4 AR = 20 damage to Frynk (+1b mounted, +3 for ride, +1 (fighting test and damage) for bastard sword with mounted quality)
LA2: Move 5 yards away (Mounted on Courser (movement 8), -3 to movement due to 13 AR - half plate + large shield)
They emerged out of the mist from the right and at Mikel's command Harold moved off in the opposite direction. Using pressure exerted from his knee's he wheeled his horse to face the threat as the quicker of the two dismounted men swung his halberd heavily into him, spending its energy on the shield face, before bouncing off his armor as Mikel leaned forward into a nasty thrust which punched through the man's face and out the back of his head. As he slumped down Mikel pulled at his sword, managing to free it after an instant of struggle while he backed his horse away from the others.

Frustrated at Mikel swiftly putting an end to his lackey, House Bracken's sworn sword charges Mikel, a blood-curdling scream accompanying him rather than some intelligible shout that could help identify his house. Mikel strained to defend himself, and it was a good thing too, as else-wise he would have been badly cut, risking being slowed dangerously early in the fight. The mysterious Knight was on him in two heartbeats and had struck quicker then Mikel could parry, his armor saving him. Mikel retaliated with a heavy slash aiming just behind the ears of his enemies mount. The sword struck true and bit deep, severing the animals spine and just as before Mikel pulled his sword free and backed away. He was working hard to keep his enemies in front of him, deal with them one at a time, and kill them all while staying alive and in one piece.

[OOC: I realize I have been using 1 too many bonus die for my bastardsword. After speaking with Roland and deciding on what is most appropriate (rolling 1d6 and subtracting from Michael's two attacks or simply subtracting six from each roll) we saw that even with subtracting six the results of both attacks still result in death for the guard and horse. So in conclusion, we subtracted six from each attack of Mikel and it did not change what happened. Thank you again for helping me figure things out sir! ]

Mikel recognises the Sigil as Ser Erryk Rivers, a bastard bracken who wears his family's colours inverted, but cannot recall his direct lineage in the family.
Erryk nimbly jumped from his saddle as his stricken mount died in the mud. Seemingly little moved by the animal's plight, Erryk indicated for his sole remaining guardsman to block Mikel's path while the night made to grab Harold as a prisoner.
- Ser Erryk - sprint towards Harold, will reach him next turn. - Wat the Guardsman - counterattack, in line to stop Ser Mikel reaching Harold.
Initiative orders Frynk the guardsman - dead Ser Erryk Mikel - next up Wat the guardsman

As soon as Ser Rivers began running towards Harold Mikel dug his spurs in and made to run over the man at arms and then the Knight. He would have preferred another course of action but there was no time. He brought his shield up and braced for what was sure to be nasty.

[OOC: Mikel is riding a courser, so 4 Damage per DoS from trample - no damage to Erryk, 8 to Wat - 4 AR] The guardsman panicked, swinging at Mikel himself rather than skewering his steed and potentially dismounting the hedgeknight. Skill, steel and a bit of sweat saw the attack safely deflected. Mikel's steed buffeted Wat, with the hedge knight now interposed between Harold and the Bracken sworn swords. Counterattack v Mikel: 5d6k4 18Injured, Wat's strike against Ser Mikel was ineffectual once more. Perhaps his quarry would tire, or perhaps the guardsman would strike at his mount instead? [OOC: Mikel attacks Wat with cautious attack to increase his CD by 3 next turn]
After riding between Harold, the Knight and his man at arms Mikel turned towards his enemies and weathered their assault as best he could. Mikel and leaned forward in his saddle when he saw an opening and thrust. It was the same technique he used to kill the first man but struck lower, more due to his exertions then intention, and the point of his sword punched through Wat's throat and he sunk into the dirt gurgling as blood poured out the entry and exit wounds. Walking his horse backwards he kept his eyes on the Knight.

[OOC: Mikel Determines consequences for the defeated Wat]
Ser Erryk set his feet firmly, disadvantaged by the hedge's knight's trick in attacking his mount. Typical hedge knight skulduggery, or practicality, depending on your perspective. Erryk certainly did not enjoy his lowered perspective against a mounted foe.
"Run then dog. But know mounts can be replaced. Doubtless my family's sigil is familiar to one that vexes it."
He taunted Mikel, but it was hard to tell if he spoke from conviction and wished to provoke further confrontation or merely to protect his bruised self-worth.
Mikel and Harold could make good their escape now, but risking leaving a foe behind to strike them another day. Or would Mikel, bruised and tired by his heroics so far, risk a decisive clash?

Mikel watched Ser Erryk Rivers and took in deep breaths slowly. He listened to the Knights taunts without response while he strained to hear if anybody masked by the mists was coming closer. When he was satisfied that no help was nearby he spoke. "Ser Rivers. If you go that way," Mikel pointed in the direction behind the Knight, "without your sword I might let you live. But move quickly and keep in mind that you three came to murder me and my squire." Time was not on Mikel's side but he felt confident he could spare a few seconds for he and his horse to recover.

Who knew how close other Bracken sworn swords were?
