[Chronologically, this occurs just after 'With Venom in her Eyes', but before 'Dancing with the Dornish'.]
When the farce of a trial concluded, Laena and Ashara shared their observations, readily agreeing on the conclusion. Most relevantly for the moment, Ser Dagos was indeed innocent. That knowledge, and the fact that Ser Balon was fighting him, put Laena in a position where there was a clear moral path before her.
But she was never one to let so-called 'morality' dictate her actions.
But to see how it impacted others? There was interest there, to be sure. Particularly with regards to Balon. You don't learn a man's true nature by viewing him on an ordinary, boring day. Rather, you place his values in conflict, and see what prevails.
Fortunately, it seemed like Ser Balon was just as interested in meeting with her as she was in meeting him, and it was a simple matter for them to meet up somewhere discreet enough to have a quiet conversation between just them.
"Ser Balon." She greets him. "Congratulations on being chosen as champion."

With all that'd happened in the last 24 hours visiting with Laena was a welcomed relief. His life was in turmoil mere hours before the Grand Melee and she'd provided him something his mother and sister had not; comfort. Despite his grief being in the presence of Laena gave Balon reason to smile, even if it was tempered by his loss.
"Thank you my lady. It seems they," whoever 'they' were, "believe Ser Dagos to be the murderer of Lord Bryce." Balon saw her at the trial and was curious to know her thoughts on the issue, "Do you agree with the conclusion?" It was short and direct but Balon knew this was important to her and he didn't want to dance around the subject.

"No." Laena shakes her head. "He's innocent. I don't even think 'they' truly believe it - they just need to accuse *somebody* to preserve the façade that this is still a nation of laws, rather than sheer bloody chaos.
"I wish I knew who really *was* the poisoner. I thought it most likely Ser Jonothor, being manipulated through his hatred of the Dornish, but it seems he's also innocent. Of that, anyway."
Laena subtly looks around for listeners, before leaning in slightly, and lowering her voice. "I *do* have a lead on the mastermind, though it's looking quite likely to get a bit ... messy. And when gambling with high stakes, the best way to ensure you can walk away intact is to have a special card up your sleeve no-one expects." She takes a slightly shaky breath, locks eyes with him, and places her palm gently atop his upper pectoral for that personal connection. "Should it come to that, can I call on you for help? Speaking honestly, it may be dangerous."

Balon nodded, "A scapegoat then." The evidence was paper thin and he wasn't surprised to hear Laena tell him he was innocent, "And you're sure of this?" Balon didn't doubt her he was just curious how she'd come to the conclusion. He rubbed his chin in thought and sighed, "I can't withdraw as champion that'd be an insult to Lord Leo. I was saved by you the first time I drew his ire. I don't think I'd be so fortunate a second time."
"Perhaps with Ser Dagos punished they real poisoner will let their guard down?" It was a silver lining even if it was grim. He looked into her eyes, "Does it bother you that I still plan to face him?"Laena subtly looks around for listeners, before leaning in slightly, and lowering her voice. He moved her hand over to where the locket was underneath his tunic, "This means something to me." The desire to kiss her was strong, "All I ask is you let me know how dangerous so I can prepare properly." He smiled, concealing the concern of what she'd gotten herself into.

Balon didn't doubt her he was just curious how she'd come to the conclusion. Laena sighs. "That's what everything I've seen and deduced points to, but if you are asking about *certainty*, I'm the wrong person to ask. With my bloodline's hereditary madness, I cannot be *certain* you are not merely a figment of an attention-deprived mind, let alone about the innocence of a man I've never met face-to-face." He rubbed his chin in thought and sighed, "I can't withdraw as champion that'd be an insult to Lord Leo. I was saved by you the first time I drew his ire. I don't think I'd be so fortunate a second time."
"Perhaps with Ser Dagos punished they real poisoner will let their guard down?" It was a silver lining even if it was grim. He looked into her eyes, "Does it bother you that I still plan to face him?""No." She responds casually. "*Someone* will face him, you stepping down will change nothing about his fate, and a lot about your own. And I care little for his fate, and much for yours. I will be watching to see how you treat a Donishman you know to be innocent, however." An enigmatic little smile, followed by a frown. "He is supposed to be rather skilled on foot, however. Do not let pride convince you that getting severely injured just before the Grand Melee is a good idea. Your prior actions could well have made you a target there for those with malicious intent. Better to yield now, should it prove necessary, rather than sustain so many injuries as to result in .. worse later. A man forced to yield in a duel still has the opportunity to marry me. A man slain in the melee does not." A moment later, her face furrows slightly, like she's put out she's said as much as she has. Balon put his hand over hers and squeezed gently, "I told you the Doom wouldn't stop me. Do you think I'd let someone hurt you?" He moved her hand over to where the locket was underneath his tunic, "This means something to me." The desire to kiss her was strong, "All I ask is you let me know how dangerous so I can prepare properly." He smiled, concealing the concern of what she'd gotten herself into. Laena readily nods. "To the best of my ability, I will." A soft smile. "Hopefully, it won't come to that. But I'm glad to have you if it does."

"...With my bloodline's hereditary madness, I cannot be *certain* you are not merely a figment of an attention-deprived mind, let alone about the innocence of a man I've never met face-to-face." He nodded at her explanation then let out a snort/laugh, "Hereditary madness? Attention-deprived? You really know how to pour honeyed words into this knight's ear." She wasn't entirely wrong. Incest had a tendency to pass less-than-desirable traits to future generations. Of course it also gave the Targaryens the ability to control dragons. "I could understand if you thought me to be a figment of your imagination. These looks and charm are usually only fit for dreams and fantasy.""No." She responds casually. "*Someone* will face him, you stepping down will change nothing about his fate, and a lot about your own. And I care little for his fate, and much for yours. I will be watching to see how you treat a Dornishman you know to be innocent, however." An enigmatic little smile, followed by a frown. "He is supposed to be rather skilled on foot, however. Balon smiled as she talked of his fate and realized he still held her hand. He didn't really feel like letting it go. "If by skilled you meaning dancing around like some poofter with a pointy stick then yes, he is skilled. But I take my opponents very seriously, doubly so in a trial like this. He may be innocent, he may not be. That's between him and the Seven. I plan to win and when I do I'll give him the option of the Wall. If he refuses... then at least it was his choice." Not that he has much choice. Balon didn't even consider losing an option and didn't mention it. He noticed Laena's furrowed face and asked her about it, "What bothering you? Anything you share stays between us, please know that." He kissed her hand in an attempt to comfort her before finally releasing it. Laena readily nods. "To the best of my ability, I will." A soft smile. "Hopefully, it won't come to that. But I'm glad to have you if it does." "You'll have me soon enough." Balon playfully winked after his innuendo, "Just know that's what my commitment it to you; Always having your back, no matter the odds."As his mind wondered what he might be committing himself too he realized he had something for her. His face reddened a little as he didn't know how his gift would be received, "I have something for you. Close you eyes for a moment."

I was always of the opinion it was your confidence which strained credulity." He noticed Laena's furrowed face and asked her about it, "What's bothering you? Anything you share stays between us, please know that." He kissed her hand in an attempt to comfort her before finally releasing it. She accepts the kiss, but shakes her head at the question. "I point out your confidence, then advise a knight on how to fight. I should let you behave naturally, and merely observe, rather than interfering just yet. Meddling is just too deeply embedded in my nature, it seems." "You'll have me soon enough." Balon playfully winked after his innuendo, "Just know that's what my commitment is to you; Always having your back, no matter the odds."As his mind wondered what he might be committing himself too he realized he had something for her. Laena frowns in suspicion momentarily at the request, but he *had* just promised to risk his life for her, so she decided to make the effort and actually trust him, at least briefly. She closes her eyes, but angles her head down ever-so-slightly, which, combined with their height difference, would make stealing a kiss more awkward. Not impossible, but he hadn't earned the easy road yet.

Laena gives a wicked smile. "Oh? I was always of the opinion it was your confidence which strained credulity." Balon laughed, "Oh no, no, no, my lady. That's firmly based in reality."She accepts the kiss, but shakes her head at the question. "I point out your confidence, then advise a knight on how to fight. I should let you behave naturally, and merely observe, rather than interfering just yet. Meddling is just too deeply embedded in my nature, it seems." "You're Lady Laena," he intentionally left off Pyre, "you act. It's how we got to where we are now." Meddling had indeed gotten the two of them to where they were now but it also seemed to have got Laena into trouble. He let the matter lie for now. Balon cocked his head in confusion when she angled her head downwards. It took a few moments for him to realize what she thought he might do. It was tempting but their first kiss wouldn't be like that. With her eyes close Balon reached into his tunic and pulled out a cloth that had been wrapped over something. Slowly he unfolded it until his gift was visible. "You can open them now." he said softly. In his hands was a silver circlet of exquisite quality and detailed filigree. At the center was a sapphire surrounded by seven smaller sapphires in the shape of the Seven pointed star. Laena noticed the color almost perfectly matched her eyes. He held it out for her to take, clearly wanting her to put it on.

Balon laughed, "Oh no, no, no, my lady. That's firmly based in reality."Laena raises an eyebrow. "Well, I look forward to that claim being proven true." It was clearly an expensive piece. With so much of her royal stipend going to funding her network, she could rarely afford such a piece, and certainly Ser Vernan never bothered with such an expensive romantic gesture. Carefully, she takes the circlet, turns it around, and rests it gently on her head, adjusting it slightly until it was at the correct elevation. When she's satisfied, she realises she's been grinning widely throughout, and her face immediately snaps to a stern expression. "Disappoint me, and I'll have it melted down for scrap, and the proceeds donated to a Dornish war orphans fund." She threatens, before her face softens. "But thank you. It's a very thoughtful gift."

Balon watched her reaction and was overjoyed by it. He'd been nervous, wondering how she'd respond to the circlet but her wide grin said more than words ever could. She'd unconsciously let her guard down for a moment and he saw exactly what he'd hoped to see; happiness. Even her stern warning seemed adorable. A goofy grin crept across his face. He'd been rehearsing the line in his head for awhile and he wanted to get it right. "Now I'll always be on your mind." he said flirtatiously. Nailed it.Balon grew a little serious, "I spoke with my mother about you yesterday before..." Balon cleared his throat, "the discovery of my father's passing. While Donnel would've been thrilled at our union my mother is... skeptical. I'll be honest I don't know how things will be at Gyldenhaal with everything that's transpired but I plan to speak with Lady Erena later and Lord Ulbert after the Grand Melee." Balon shuffled his feet a little, "I just felt you should know my determination to see us wed hasn't changed."

Nailed it."Wiser men might be more concerned over that idea." Laena quietly mutters, before responding with a mock-conciliatory smile. "Always? You clearly have not spent enough time close to young children. No, this is 'special event when the children aren't around' jewellery. I swear, if there were beautiful and expensive jewellery made from inch-thick steel, one child or other would still find some way to bend or break it within a *day*. Still, if the feast tonight goes ahead, you can expect me to wear it then." Balon grew a little serious, "I spoke with my mother about you yesterday before..." Balon said it as if that wouldn't be an impossible task to achieve. He continued along the line of jewelry and children, "It sounds like you have experience when it comes to children and destroyed jewellery. Maybe.... maybe when you're comfortable with it *I* could meet your children." He wasn't quite sure how to approach the subject of her children, "I could find them something equally shiny to help distract them." He looked up at the circlet, proud of the selection and how much she liked it. "But I'll settle for tonight's feast."
"So long as she's merely sceptical, rather than outright hostile, I'll prove myself to her through my deeds afterwards. I look forward to hearing how well you do with the others." "I think the more you accomplish for our cause, the more she'll appreciate you and your abilities." Balon sighed, "I'd prefer she like you because we'd make each other happy but one can wish.""As much as I'd like to spend the day tucked away back here with you I should probably get ready for the duel. Hopefully I'll have good news for you later tonight."

"So you're saying the next piece of jewelry should be made of Valyrian steel? Consider it done." Balon said it as if that wouldn't be an impossible task to achieve. "Which of us has Valyrian blood, again?" Laena mutters to herself rhetorically. "But I'll settle for tonight's feast."There's a small but perceptible wince when he asks about her experience, though she doesn't elaborate. "Once Lord Ulbert is at least not hostile towards the idea, we can arrange something. They do love meeting new people." "I think the more you accomplish for our cause, the more she'll appreciate you and your abilities." Balon sighed, "I'd prefer she like you because we'd make each other happy but one can wish." Laena gives a small shrug. "If, in many years, Landar were as infatuated with a Lady with a reputation for cunning as you are with me, I'd be at least as wary, so don't judge her too harshly for it." "As much as I'd like to spend the day tucked away back here with you I should probably get ready for the duel. Hopefully I'll have good news for you later tonight." She nods acknowledgement. "Good fortune to you, Ser."

"If, in many years, Landar were as infatuated with a Lady with a reputation for cunning as you are with me, I'd be at least as wary, so don't judge her too harshly for it." Balon noticed the wince but didn't press. As far as he was concerned they'd have a lifetime together to heal whatever emotional trauma she was hiding (and he suspected there was quite a bit). He wasn't looking to turn her into some content, dutiful wife but she clearly had issues that needed resolving and he wanted to help. "Meeting them sounds exciting and exhausting." Perhaps seeing her with her children would indicate how good of a mother she could be to their children? "Like all mothers, Shiera wants what's best for her children. I don't judge her for it even if I find it annoying sometimes." Balon realized his error when speaking of mother's love and intentions. He tried to correct himself but it was too late. "Most mothers that is." Shit. She nods acknowledgement. "Good fortune to you, Ser." He offered his arm to her as they walked until they got back to public view. He looked at the circlet one last time then gave her a wink, "Until tonight then."After your response we can call it a scene if you'd like.

Laena gives a small, sad smile. "Even my mother wanted what she felt was best for me." Though what was unsaid spoke volumes.
She nods at his parting words. "Let us hope so."
After they have parted, she makes her way back to her tent, to store the circlet somewhere safe. If she started wearing such fancy jewellery in the middle of the day, Lord Marq might realise she had another piece in play, and she needed to keep this quiet, in case her suspicions about him proved well-founded. To wear it for the feast, as she'd promised, should be safe enough.
Now, she had a trial by combat to witness...
