Shiera was a woman on the move. She wasn't the type of lady to sit idly by while knights beat on one another with lance and sword. Balon had tracked his mother down to Highgarden, most likely speaking with lords and people of influence behind closed doors. He often wondered how much Lord Gormon shared with her as opposed to him about the plans to put Ser Daemon on the throne. There was the briefest tinge of jealousy about that but Balon had more important things to focus on; convincing Shiera Laena Pyre was the woman for him.
Balon saw her walking down a hallway and quickened his step to catch up with her. When they were side by side he greeted her, "Hello mother. I see you've been keeping busy." he smiled knowing what she'd most likely been up to. "I've come to talk to you about marriage." he held up a hand to stop her from talking, "I'm not here to annoy you by asking for another list. I'm here to tell you I've decided." He breathed in and steeled himself for what he assumed would be an unpleasant response, "Lady Laena Pyre."
Balon waited for her response before defending his decision.

Shiera turns from Delia and looks at Balon as if he were a five year old, then she simply asks "Why her?". She had always wanted her children to be think for themselves, put the reasoning before the conclusions. If you can't properly explain why the decision is a good one, she likes to say, then it is probably not. She had time and time again complained that the only one in the entire family that had learnt that lesson was Delia. The one time a lady in waiting had quipped that Erena could do it, too, she had been shut up with a fierce gaze establishing that Erena does not count as family.

'Why her?' The question was both simple and difficult. Balon had not anticipated Delia being here and didn't know if that'd help or hurt. "It's good to see you sister." He considered hugging her but decided against it knowing his mother wasn't one to waste time. Balon explained his decision. Start of strong... "Because she's you." That ought to get her attention, "She's smart, cunning, and dangerous. Together we'd be what you and father could've been if he hadn't lived his life with his head buried in the sand."Balon then used the relationship between the Blackbriars and Starkwoods, "By marrying her I deny the Starkwoods a politically savvy individual and gain one for the cause. When I first met her she said she'd remain neutral between factions until she married at which point she'd be one with her husband. I believe her to be telling the truth and my affiliation is well know and it didn't dissuade her."He moved to her heritage, "She is a great bastard. That matters to people. Our children would have a claim on Starkwood lands and Gyldenhaal. When the spoils are divvied if both Starkwoods and Blackbriars side with the King their titles could be stripped and handed out to those who chose to fight for the true king. The two lands combined could be quite powerful with the right lord and lady." Balon clearly implied it to be Laena and him, "And while it is no guarantee I'm sure she could convince her brother to join us." "I know where you want me to go help after this tournament but if we were married and I chose to accept Lord Reynald's offer of service she could keep a watchful eye on them and make sure they maintain the correct loyalty in my absence. And not just the Florents but their bannermen."Balon made his final point, "She *wants* to be useful and we'd be good together." He added offhandedly, "It might not matter to you but we actually like each other."

Shiera gives him a puzzled look, then turns er gaze to Delia wanting to hear her thoughts. "Sounds like the fairy tales with happy endings father insisted that Wart and I be told because he didn't want us to hear about the real world." Their mother is taken aback with just how direct she is. "Everything you would have ever wished for in a wife in one pretty package, lordship included. Like, listen to yourself." Delia seems innocent from a distance, if she would just keep her mouth shut just about every young knight in the realms would volunteer to be around to protect her, just in case. "Here is how this story is more likely to end, she will make it seem as if you are edging ever closer to winning her affections, she will give you a look down her neckline, a touch on the hand, a touch on the thigh, deep look in your eyes, admiration of the firmness of your arms" for demonstration, she gives his upper arm a good squeeze, and then runs two fingers alongside it in a way that Lady Rhonda certainly not would have thought her how to do just right. "Maybe she might lean in and whisper and then, ahem, accidentally, her breasts will brush across your arm. And she certainly is not virginal, she might desire some pleasure for pleasure's sake. The end of it is that you will do whatever it is she wants you to, and then throw you away like a sword so ruined that it's better to just melt it down." She seems to take a particular pleasure in being mean, riling up her brothers, or at least attempting to had always been an activity she enjoyed, Titus and Balon might have been old enough not to burst into anger which she only fueled by acting triumphant, Vortimer? Not at all. "See, the thing about Great Bastards is that they always gets things their way, whether through, force, charm, intrigue or simply by defying convention and do as they please, when it comes down to it, they are sons and daughters of the dragon, and if you had read your histories you would know that most who sought to bond with a dragon instead found that the dragon viewed them as dinner, so see, maybe what she wants is what you want, maybe she makes you want what she wants, but if you think she does not already have a preference for whom should sit on that ugly and uncomfortable chair, you will either think you have won a big victory, riding your dragon in the war for Ser Daemon's birthright, or you will learn too late that you just look delectable and she was merely hungry."
Quick to recover from the shock, and not wanting Balon to have the chance to snap back, Shiera breaks this line of conversation. "Lady Rhonda commended your good manners, where did you learn these bad ones?" Delia just shrugs and smirks. "You and I are going to have a very long conversation, young lady" Delia seems not to like the sound of that, but just then her face lights up as she asks with her most innocent hopeful face. "Will there be lemoncake?" At that comment, Shiera almost melts. Almost. She shrugs off her smile as quickly as it appeared before turning to Balon with the strict seriousness she usually has. "As for you, only a fool would trust Lady Laena, your sister may have a vivid imagination, a naughty mind and a pent up need to tease family, but she is not entirely wrong. A great bastard warrants extreme caution, and one that is half Starkwood will grant us no end of trouble."

Balon turned to his sister, his jaw clenched and nostrils flared. He loved her but sometimes he wanted to backhand that acerbic mouth of hers. Instead of trying to defend Laena against anything Delia said he tried to turn it around on her, "Tell me sister, what Great Bastard rode into Highgarden, promised you the moon, took your maidenhead, then dumped you like yesterday's bath water? Is that why you dislike them so?"
"This is no fairy tale. If it was I'd be married to Lady Tanda and be made a principal bannerman thanks to Grumpkin farts." He rolled his eyes. Do they think I think it'd be that easy? I'm well aware of the risk. I'm also aware of the rewards." Was Balon being lied to by Laena? It didn't seem that way. "My children gain a claim to their lands and I plan to serve House Florent when I return." He didn't say 'return from the Riverlands' because he didn't know how much Delia was aware of. "We'll be nowhere near here and you can go about sowing discontent. Why would I stop you?"
Laena didn't seem to care about his rendezvous with Lady Jeyne, not that his mother needed to know about that, and defended himself. "Despite what you may think I don't let women lead me around by my cock." That was more for Delia than Shiera. He didn't care to use that language in front of his mother but he didn't like it when it was inferred he was an idiot. "She has asked for nothing other than the blessing of Lord Jon and Lord Ulbert." There were some things she alluded to but they weren't worth mentioning. Balon acknowledged Shiera's concern, "I understand she is a Starkwood but to lull them into a sense of false security only to yank the rug out from under them when it's time is beneficial." Time meaning the outbreak of the war. Balon tried to shift "blame" to Titus, "If you want to worry about anyone worry about Titus. Lady Ashara is wrapping him around her little finger. Laena is *not* Ashara."

"Titus only acts like a fool when women are involved, or someone else acts dishonorably" Delia cocks her head to the side impishly. "You need no such prompting."
"I worry about all my children" Shiera shoots in, with a telling look at Delia when she puts emphasis on all, however clever and precocious the vicious little lady might be, she is still a child in her mother's eyes, though the same appears to apply for Balon and Titus as well and Donnel for that matter. "Titus wants to right all the world's wrongs, I worry that your father has done the same damage to Vortimer's young mind and you are blinded to everything that could go wrong with your plans, you should have expected that someone better than you would be on the alert when you tried to pick a fight with Ser Jasper, to expect that it would be *him* is a stretch, but you would not have much of a chance against Redtusk either. And with Lady Laena, there are so many things that could go wrong that enough of them will to give us trouble, if you can be prepared for that, if you can anticipate that, if you can deal with it when it happens...." She sighs, obviously not believing Balon capable of those things. "If I only I had a son with Delia's wits, Titus' heart and courage and your determination to do whatever it takes to put this family on top..."
"Instead I have a noble fool of a son, a reckless fool of a son, a son that might be saved from the fate of being a fool and a foul mouthed daughter that needs to learn that the games at court are not played for fun, what if your cousin wants to bind Lord Eldon to him without giving up his own daughter, hmm? His options then would be Joanna..and you." That comment makes Delia stiffen like a three year old threatened with the grump coming to take them away, that sounds much more possible than she likes.

That comment makes Delia stiffen like a three year old threatened with the grump coming to take them away, that sounds much more possible than she likes. For a moment the vitriol and petty barbs were forgotten at the mention of Delia being married to Lord Eldon, "No." It was almost a gasp rather than a word. "Surely he'd need someone from his own house to secure their allegiance?" Balon knew Gormon would never sacrifice Tanda to the pig but Joanna was comely and had the right last name. "I worry about all my children" Shiera shoots in, with a telling look at Delia when she puts emphasis on all, however clever and precocious the vicious little lady might be, she is still a child in her mother's eyes, though the same appears to apply for Balon and Titus as well and Donnel for that matter. "If I only I had a son with Delia's wits, Titus' heart and courage and your determination to do whatever it takes to put this family on top..." "No I did not expect *him* to challenge me. I saw Lord Walgrave challenge Ser Symon and thought to return the favor by challenging Ser Jasper. Everyone knows Lord Walgrave dislikes Ser Jasper and I thought I'd curry some good-will from him by embarrassing Jasper on the field."Balon refocused on why he was here, Lady Laena, "I admit there are things that could go wrong but I've considered that. I *can* anticipate them, I *can* deal with them, and if *you* treated her like you do your children I think she'd be extremely helpful." Balon did concede a point, "But I don't think she'll help you," Balon had to think of a word other than assassinate, "facilitate the early demise of certain members of our rival house."

"He will ask a great many other lords for the hands of their daughters before even considering the niece of Lord Blackbriar, true." Shiera agrees. "But Joanna would just warm his bed and give him heirs until she dies in childbirth" Joanna was good looking, but slim of frame like her mother Myrielle and could use more meat on her bones, Balon remembers that the maester was very worried when she became pregnant again, given how difficult it had been to carry forth Joanna, and his fears became reality as she gave birth to a stillborn boy too early and only half the size that he should have been and expired from the ordeal. Lord Eldon did not strike Balon as a man that would care about the health of his wife where Ser Clarent had been considerate, but it was said that Lady Myrielle had insisted on taking the risk. Shiera had given birth to four children without any difficulty and Delia seemed healthy. "My daughter would rule Longtable by his side." she claims as the grimace on Delia's face suggests that she would sooner join the silent sisters.
"If I treated her like I treat you, she would hate me" Shiera comments dryly. "So let's hear it, then, what could go wrong?"

As repulsive of the idea was Shiera was right, not that he was going to say so in front of his sister. The shock of a possible marriage with Eldon would have to wear off before Delia would listen to reason. But then again what were the chances of something like that actually occurring? Zero if the Gods are good. But... securing a marriage to Lord Eldon would be a significant coup for House Blackbriar. "If I treated her like I treat you, she would hate me" Shiera comments dryly. "So let's hear it, then, what could go wrong?" "I don't hate you." He didn't know if that was what she was implying but it didn't hurt to let her know that. "You may be excessively... firm but you're good at heart. I love you just as much as this little tart standing next to me." Balon nodded to Delia and gave her a smirk, her barbed words forgotten after the mention of a marriage to Eldon. Balon had spent quite a bit of time thinking what could go wrong with Laena and laid his thoughts out before his family. "The first thing she could do is try to bring me into the royalist camp. But we all know there is a better chance of the sun rising in the west than that happening." He continued, "She claims she will support whatever side her husband supports. If that's true, which I believe it is, she can be tested to prove her dedication. She can be given tasks that don't involve House Starkwood. A house teetering on joining the Fire faction that just needs a little push for example." She'd have to prove herself more to Shiera than Balon. "She could be a double agent. Seemingly helpful but sending critical information to those loyal to King Daeron. If suspected we could supply her with faulty information and see what ends up in the hands of the enemy." Balon thought of personal things, "She knows I want children. She already has two and maybe in an act of spite to deny the Blackbriars children she suddenly becomes unable to conceive. That is easy enough to discover. And a woman can be set aside if barren." Or sent to the Silent Sisters like Fireball's wife."She could actually succeed in bringing lasting peace between the Blackbriars and Starkwoods. She could try and bring scandal to our House, Starpike, Brightwater, or anyone firm in their support to Ser Daemon." The list was theoretically endless but Balon believed he'd given this considerable thought. "And if it's true I marginalize her. I beat her until she becomes a quiet, subservient wife, doing nothing but producing babies." The thought of beating that beautiful face caused him distress. Almost as much as if Laena was lying to him. "I take this seriously."

"It would be seen as an effort to bring about peace." Shiera shakes her head. "You think I could possibly agitate our knights against godless Starkwoods if you marry one? Animosity against their heathen ways is what keeps this house out of King Daeron's camp" Shiera insisted on calling him king, because the way she saw it, the king was whoever who commanded the power to sit upon that damned chair. As demonstrated by Maegor the Cruel and the Dance of Dragons, birthright matters less than steel and flame. "It's the main reason why I don't agree with Erena about expelling Abelar, he is insufferable, but he keeps the smallfolk and most of the knights scared out of their wits that they might let the impure into their midst, they think they will end up in the eternal torture of the seven hells if they allow sin and heresy and worse to go unnoticed and fail to purge it." Shiera knows the scripture well enough to confidently call that nonsense, an opinion she finds it wisest not to share beyond the three of them.
"Marry her and this house will start sliding into the king's camp. Maybe you and her might ensure that the Florents stay true to their new course, but I have no doubt that she is fully capable of ruining all the efforts you and Gormy went through to make it so without you ever noticing."

Animosity against their heathen ways is what keeps this house out of King Daeron's camp" "Bring about peace? You mean like father, Titus and Abelar have done already?" Of the Blackbriar men Balon had done the least in that regard. "Donnel fraternizes with them then has the gall to shower Lord Ulbert with praise." He added sarcastically, "In case you missed it father publicly proclaimed his allegiance to the King." Balon moved on to his brother, "Titus has spent the better part of the past few days dreaming of what lies between Lady Ashara's legs. And the good septon," there was hate in his voice at the mention of Abelar, "rushed to the defense of Ashara when rumors swirled about her." "If she were to come to Gyldenhaal we can say she wanted to leave her kin behind. Be imaginative in your reasoning. Faith, heritage, cruelty, whatever." Laena did want to leave Starkwood but lack of religious zeal was low on the list, if it was there at all. "If fear doesn't keep them convinced coin might help. I received a substantial reward for Ser Aladore's rescue." Never underestimate a good old fashioned bribe.Balon continued on about marriage but changed the person, "Frankly I'm surprised you and Lord Gormon aren't focusing your efforts on getting Lady Amerei betrothed to Ser Aladore. Rarely will there be a better chance to achieve that marriage than Ser Aladore being kidnapped under Lord Leo's protection." Balon was going on a tangent but he was buying time to think of more ways to argue his case. "With Lady Amerei gone Lord Gormon could then marry Lady Tanda to Ser Willas and House Tyrell would be bound to our cause through two marriages." Balon assumed this had already been thought of but wanted to show his mother he was capable of looking at the bigger picture. "A rabid dog will eventually turn on whomever holds the leash." "Marry her and this house will start sliding into the king's camp. Maybe you and her might ensure that the Florents stay true to their new course, but I have no doubt that she is fully capable of ruining all the efforts you and Gormy went through to make it so without you ever noticing." "I might notice, I might not. But Lord Reynald and Lord Gormon *would* notice. I'd handle it from there." Balon was struggling to find ways to convince Shiera, "I want you to trust my judgement. I know you're skeptical considering my track record but I see great potential and someone ready to be loyal. The rest of the Reach has missed it because she married an unknown landed knight then returned to a backwater house no one knows exist. She is valuable. We *can* keep Gyldenhaal conflicted until the time comes."

"Your judgement is about as trustworthy as Lord Durwell is predictable" Delia almost sticks her tongue out. "I can twirl you around like a fool, and your cock doesn't want a say when it comes to me, now does it?"

"Your judgement is about as trustworthy as Lord Durwell is predictable" Delia almost sticks her tongue out. "I can twirl you around like a fool, and your cock doesn't want a say when it comes to me, now does it?" Balon gently put his hand on Delia's shoulder as if he was comforting her. With a mix of sarcasm and remorse he said dryly, "If only we were Targaryens we wouldn't have to worry about marriages, isn't that right my sweet young sister." Balon had zero sexual desire for his sister but in a game of one-upmanship Balon wouldn't be beat by her. Removing his hand he turned to Shiera, "Mother I brought this to you first so you can take credit when it is presented to Lord Jon. You know we share the same vision for the Kingdom and House Blackbriar. That won't change with Lady Laena as my wife. What will change is who gains more leverage with Lord Jon. It can be you, father," Balon said the last name knowing it'd invoke a response, "or Lady Erena."
"Let him think you've turned the page then after the marriage go right back to casting the Starkwoods as heathens. I ask for your trust. I think I've earned it." That was debatable.

"If only" Delia repeats with a smirk. "Then I would rule and you would simply think that my wants were your wants all along."
"Your actions here have hardly earned you anything but scorn." Shiera protests. "You are my son, I trust you with my life and that of the rest of this family, but I do not trust Lady Laena at all, and I do not trust your judgement in matters such as these."

Edit: Changed some language as I mentioned Brightwater earlier. "If only" Delia repeats with a smirk. "Then I would rule and you would simply think that my wants were your wants all along." Balon tried and failed to suppress a smile. "Sweet sister, you'd spend far too much time on your back to rule." Gross. "Your actions here have hardly earned you anything but scorn." Shiera protests. "You are my son, I trust you with my life and that of the rest of this family, but I do not trust Lady Laena at all, and I do not trust your judgement in matters such as these." "If I've earned nothing but scorn then you should be happy I was able to secure the interest of a Great Bastard." Balon said plainly. "If I've earned praise someone would've approached us by now with a marriage proposal." That was a guess by Balon. "As I already said when I return," he was referring to the Riverlands, "barring unforeseen circumstances I'll be joining House Florent if they'll still accept me." Balon added in his best authoritative voice, "And Lady Laena will accompany me there as my wife."
He softened his tone and spoke as a son to his mother, "If you don't trust her then meet with her tomorrow at the feast." "Do it for me."
