Given Ser Rennifer Waters' history of black deeds, Lord Starling's dramatic challenge to Lord Merryweather's entire household and the previous evening's broken proposal Roland had every reason to suspect his foe would seek to make an example of him, or perhaps even slay him. Against most knights and lords, a man of Roland's size and skill would be heavily favoured, but such could not be said of Ser Rennifer. The man was a vicious killer, but few could find fault in his abilities, merely the ends they were directed towards. Bearing not just his new bastard sword but also Ser Daeron Waters' longsword, Roland resolved to attempt to match his companion in arms. If he could prevail here, he could free Alicent from her entanglements with her honour intact. With a salute to Lord Tyrell, Roland attempted to put his feelings for Alicent to one side and ignore the nagging absence of his hair, trying to focus on only the moment before him. Roland has nothing on Ser Rennifer in terms of size, and the brute is fast, coming upon Roland with terrible force and brutality, luckily he obeys the edicts of Lord Tyrell and wields a sword instead of the morningstar he used to crush the skull of one knight that insulted Lord Eldon's sister, all the same, the way he uses his shield to ably block most angles from which Roland might reply gives rise to serious concern. Roland is facing what perhaps is the main reason that Lord Eldon may think himself capable of getting away with just about anything, even for those few men who could match him in trial by combat, facing him would still be a terrible risk.

Ser Rennifer was Roland's equal in skill, larger and quicker than the Reachman. Roland desperately sought to use Ser Rennifer's momentum against him to first bring to tower knight to his knees and then hew apart the shield he bore so skillfully. With his shield smashed, Rennifer uses the arm no longer carrying the shield to pull Roland down to his level, following up with a brutal blow to the throat. Knockdown: 8d6k5 25Attack: 8d6k5+1 25 Is 4x7=28, so 18 after AR looks like. CD: 9 AR: 10 Health 12

This was a desperate fight for life now, not just Alicent's honour. As Septon Abelar had noticed at the bath house, Roland's body was curiously unmarked for a veteran: skill and heavy armour had left him with few scars. If he lived through this, he would earn some today. Coughing blood, Roland cast aside his sword and shield, scrambling desperately for the greater weight and leverage of his bastard sword. He matched Ser Rennifer, starting with a savage double handed pommel strike and following up by using his free hand to half sword, aiming for gaps in his foe's plate. "Yield Ser," Roland demanded, knowing there was a chance the next blow either man dealt or received would be fatal. The reply that Roland receives is a fist to the face, but the slash Ser Rennifer's follows up with is not so dangerous as the last.
CD: 9 AR: 10 Health 2/12 Injuries: 2 Two-weapon Attack: 9d6k5-1 15 Huh, 2 DoS for 2x8=16-10=6 damage then.

Roland's expectation of a savage blow had not been realised - perhaps some miracle of the Seven, although he may need another, for even a misjudged blow from Ser Rennifer felt powerful enough to stun a Fossoway Destrier. He was panting now, driving the point of his sword deep in to Ser Rennifer under his rondel, still guiding the blade halfway down his his gauntlet. To Roland's alarm, he now realised it was not just Ser Rennifer's blood on his gauntlet but his own, already seeping through from his neck wound. "Yield Ser, you may not get another chance." AR: 10 Health: 2/12 I/W/F: 1/1/3 Lesser action: aim Lesser action: D10 All Men are Fools - aim R3 BS 2H: 10d6k5+2 26, sorry, missing another -1 from third point of Fatigue to ignore wound penalty. - 28 Damage - 10 AR = 18 Damage [OOC: is Rennifer perhaps rolling an extra Dice with the two weapon attack as he was 8 rolled previously when attacking me on the ground and 7 rolled before 1B for being on the ground. Sorry if I've missed something, might not cost him anything but might drop him 1 DoS on his already very unlucky roll... I actually have an extra dice too in R2, albeit I'd have been better off just drawing my dirk and dropping my highest dice and switching to a 4 doesn't affect DoS in the R2 attack. I'll blame jet lag for not doing that...]

Without a word, Rennifer throws down his sword to the cheer of the crowd and a shadow coming across the face of Lord Eldon.
He gets +1b from you being knocked down which I forgot in the first test.
He takes a wound and yields.

Though he cheered Roland's victory against Eldon's "champion" Daeron was conflicted about the outcome.
On one hand he was happy to see that his friend had not only survived the encounter, but won as well, and that Lord Eldon had not gotten his way.
But on the other hand he had hoped to see Rennifer dead in the dirt, or at least permanently maimed. The Merryweather champion was little more than an animal and would go on to serve his lord's dark will with savage effectiveness.
I cannot fault Roland for wanting to end the duel. I'm not the one on the ground against that brute, and another blow could have ended with another shield up on the wall at Kingsbridge.

Roland tore off his helm, throwing it to his squire Hugh and moving to staunch the bleeding at his neck and collarbone. By the Seven, Ser Rennifer hits like the demon he is. Roland suspected this would not be the last time a Kingsbridge man crossed blades with Ser Rennifer, at Highgarden and beyond.
This had been a triumph of fortitude and grit rather than the epic swordplay of songs and poems. The dry, dusty weather at least meant the combatants were not drenched in mud, but the blood both had shed more than made up for its absence.
Still, in the moment none of that mattered to Ser Roland, with even his wounds forgotten as he gazed up at the beautiful Lady Alicent in the crowd.
"I am your knight my lady, this day and always," he shouted, opting for sincerity over flowery speech. Truth be told, his head rang too much from his foeman's blows for flowery speeches.
There was no need to denounce Lord Merryweather's lies - Roland had already dispelled them by deeds.
He hoped the singers would focus on the romance and chivalry of his triumph, not the fact that Hugh had to half support him on his way to the maester's tent.
[OOC: In that case I think Ser Rennifer might have been short changed a bonus dice in R1, although hopefully it doesn't matter much as I think even rolling a 6 he would only get +2 net, not enough for an extra DoS. Just trying to be fair!]

Wild horses would not have kept Titus away from this duel. Ser Rennifer was clearly a villain through and through and deserved whatever punishment Roland was to bring upon him ten-folded.
When the duel began however Ser Rennifer soon took the upper-hand and it seemed as if Roland was lost, another man of honour cut down in this cursed tournament. Titus jeered and shouted curses at the Crownlander bastard when he struck blow upon blow against his friend but cheered and praised the gods when Roland retaliated and not once, but twice offered the blackguard the chance to yield, something that would not have been given in return.
When the dust finally settled, Ser Rennifer accepted defeat and both knights stood there drenched in blood Titus cheered at the top of his lungs. He swiftly (if un-graceful) made his way down the stands and leapt over the fencing that separated crowd from tilting grounds and rushed after to the maester's tent where Ser Roland where being taken to see to his friend.

Roland is a pompous prick but he doesn't deserve to die. Maybe just get that pretty face of his messed up a little.
Ser Rennifer's black reputation was eclipsed only by his skill in combat and Balon had come to see how good he really was. Roland was a fantastic jouster but had declined the group melee Donnel had set up in the beginning days of the tournament. Time to see how good you really are. Roland was fighting for Lady Alicent and Balon couldn't really blame him. House Yronwood was one of the few tolerable houses in Dorne and Lady Alicent looked more like a woman from the Reach than your typical slut from south of the Red Mountains.
When Roland received the blow to his throat Balon thought he was finished but he responded in kind and defeated Rennifer. The smart play would be to kill the blackguard but Roland doesn't seem to be the prudent kind. Balon muttered, "It's nice to see Roland pull his head from in between Dornish legs long enough to defend their *virtue*."
Like many around him Balon stood and clapped for Roland. "Redtusk would be proud." he begrudgingly admitted.
