Once again, the rivalry in the stands is just as fierce as down at the lists, with Lady Amerei quite publicly looking forward to have Ser Daemon vanquish all before him and crown her the queen of love and beauty, with all the subtlety of a jealous girl of five and ten in gleeful anticipation of Tanda the Tart's champion facing the warrior reborn. She cannot quite tell who holds the advantage after the first three tilts, nobody can, but everyone agrees that while Lord Marq might be able to hold his own against Ser Daemon at the lists, there is no way he could possibly have a chance to keep up with Blackfyre. Triumph is assured. Only, it is not. The forth tilt sees Ser Daemon wobble in the saddle without so much as giving Lord Marq any trouble in return, the lord of her dreams, her future husband, robbed and seduced by Lady Tanda, she can forgive him for his infidelities, but in this tourney, but in this tourney he should pay for them by falling off his horse to his own humiliation and to that of the tart. Instead, Lord Marq changes to aggressive tactics that almost succeeds in ruining *her* story and working up a seemingly unassailable lead in the favor of the crowds.
On the fifth lance he seems to recover his stride but Lord Marq shows no signs whatsoever of faltering, the sixth lance of Ser Daemon almost fails to break upon the Durwell sigil. Amerei shouts angrily in very unladylike fashion at her knight to pull himself together and be worthy of her favor. The smug satisfaction upon the face of the trollop ever more unbearable. She knows as well as her chosen knight that he must unhorse his opponent to best him, but the seventh tilt is hardly any better than the sixth. On the eight, he finally delivers a blow that ought to have settled it, but Lord Marq withstands the barrage...oh, ever so deserving of her favor and her hand, but also so undeserving of winning under the spell of the harlot of Starpike. And what's worse, Ser Daemon is flung out of his seat to make matters all the worse.
Almost everyone cheers for Lord Marq. Almost everyone. Lady Amerei does not. Lady Amerei takes in the scene, seething with cold fury, angry at Lady Tanda for whoring herself out to ruin her tourney, angry at Lord Marq for falling for her witchcrafts and refusing to fall off his horse as his just penalty, angry at everyone, she spies Lord Mullendore gleefully beginning to ask for his winnings from various rich lords, Lord Mullendore, a crafty clever one that, did he perhaps rig this match to make a serious windfall? Sabotaging Ser Daemon? How else to explain how she had now been denied her rightful crown? Perhaps Tanda had lifted her skirts for him, too?
