The Ser Symon flub makes for cool narrative, very appropriate. Plus his personal skill and the other support from House Starkwood more than compensates. We can play up to Ser Symon's recruiting efforts in other threads and the recruitment event. It's nice when the dice help tell a good story.
Speaking of good stories, I have various schemes for injecting some tragedy in to Roland's story:
1) If (!) Roland wins the joust, crown Lady Janna Hightower queen of love and beauty, end up pushed in to marriage with her (by a romantic proposal from either party - young woman carried away by romance of moment and Hightowers have positive view of Roland from Remembrance event? Political pressure by some Blood members to try to split Hightower in the civil war, which is what I think happens in canon) then have torrid, tragic affair with true love Alicent Yronwood. Idiot wins joust, ends up in wrong marriage, dishonours himself with affair. 2) Somebody uses their Fire/Blood points to kill a Kingsguard member at the end of the story and Roland gets appointed to the gap (potentially out of politics/spite to stop him being a potential loyalist way to swing Cordwayner from Fire to Blood?). Can't marry Alicent Yronwood due to duty. Potentially has torrid affair, banished to the wall/executed. Idiot wins childhood dream of position on Kingsguard just when he was beginning to abandon it for true love and concern for his family's political direction. 3) Get killed in duel by Ser Rennifer Waters. Very tragic but awfully final. Idiot dies in fight over woman.
They're all genre appropriate! 3 is "anyone can die", 1 and 2 would be the classic "be careful what you wish for/being undone by success". The narrator's helpful NPC notes on Roland even had this in them: "A romantic idealist at heart, ultimate objective being to join the kingsguard, failing that, he can hardly do worse than to serve among the premier knights of the Reach."
Will see if events in play end up supporting any of these, but I'm big on turning moments of success in to poisoned chalices (where people are willing). Delighted to hear any other ideas on adding some vinegar to things.

Hmmm...
I kind of like:
4) Challenges Lord Eldon to release Lady Alicent from her betrothal and rescue his true love from the clutches of the monster. Lord Eldon appoints Ser Rennifer as his champion. Roland wins the duel (perhaps killing Ser Rennifer, perhaps not) and wins the hand of Lady Alicent. Then he is offered a position on the King's guard and must make the impossible choice between his true love and fulfilling his childhood dream. Sometimes winning... isn't.

Are you suggesting a spot in the Kingsguard might open up after this Chronicle/melee? 😉
Oh how Balon would love to see Roland be an adulterer. Nothing dispells prejudice like cheating on your Andal wife with some skank from Dorne.

Nothing dispells prejudice like cheating on your Andal wife with some skank from Dorne. It would be a pretty cool plot development (either the adultery or the breaking of the Kingsguard oath), would be nice to "break" Roland. None of this may come to pass if the dice/NPC deaths don't fall the right way, but fun to bounce around ideas. I'll confess I was thinking of people using the Fire/Blood points to kill NPCs (http://greatbastards.boards.net/thread/35/fire-blood). I hadn't accounted for Balon's bloody influence and combat prowess thinning the herd further in the melee! Malyk - that would be great dilemma to play out too. Even lots of the "winning" plays end up in unpleasant IC decisions. Could twist the knife by then having someone Roland dislikes marry Alicent if he takes the white. Game of Thrones - the only way to win is not to play!

Not all Kingsguard have DP to burn.
Intriguingly, the Starlings leans heavily Fire in the official count if I have counted correctly, and Fire is having a lead, too. Meaning that the Starlings could use fire points to have Roland (Declared for Blood) appointed to the Kingsguard if there is a spot.

Meaning that the Starlings could use fire points to have Roland (Declared for Blood) appointed to the Kingsguard if there is a spot. Could be interesting if Daeron and Addam want to simultaneously remove a strong Blood kingsguard knight and promote potential trouble-maker Roland out of their house. Admittedly gives a Blood supporter a cool thing with Fire points that Fire supporters strove hard to earn, but I suppose Roland could then use any Blood points he earns to bump up Starling's influence/hand in his tourney Wealth winnings to even things out (plus as noted, helps purge House Starling of a Blood supporter and kills one of Blood's good fighters). Lots of cool things to be done with the Fire/Blood points and gives players agency but in a controlled fashion. Looking forward to seeing what my house members (and others!) spend theirs on. I've missed out on interacting with that system much, but it was worth it to play out an organic move towards a particular side.

House Blackbriar is so divided that I doubt we’ll see much of anything With two of its players set to leave the house even (to join heavy Fire groups/houses) things can get juicy there!

Roland, you forgot
5) Joins the Kingsguard, then learns that his brother really is a cuckold and has no trueborn heirs, leaving the legitimized Ser Normyn as next in line to inherit... and then Lord ilyn mysteriously dies to a bad case of blade to the guts, whereupon Ser Normyn recognizes Quentin and Denyse as his own, and appeals to Ser Daemon to legitimize them upon his ascension to the throne.
Which of course is not incompatible with any other Kingsguard option.

OOC I really like 5). That's high tragedy!
IC it's an awful, sickness inducing nightmare.

I vote for Roland winning the tourney, getting married, having an affair with Alicent. Grows and understands that adultery is bad but so are lots of other things and no need to get too worked up over it. Lives happily ever after.
I feel strongly about this because I want Roland to be happy and that's my only reason. On my honor as a Levalle-in-law.

Ha, I'll hold you to that at Roland's execution Parmen! Also, enjoying the way Parmen's scene with Simon Tarly is developing. Simon is clearly a total wrong un. Glad I wrote a rivalry with him in to my backstory, but it seems like he'll do his best to make more enemies during play. He's not one to mince words: "It is in my right to discipline my squire as I see fit! Simon utters angrily. "I piss on your gossip, if the piece of shit had done his job properly, I would have defeated Sr Titus, easily." greatbastards.boards.net/post/12260/thread

Gods, he’s coming for me in the melee isn’t he? Knight his squire and have him serve alongside you nobly, Fossoway style/as a human shield. It might be a target rich environment for Ser Simon, as he has a number of PCs he presumably dislikes and various PCs that dislike him in turn!

Human shield or sacrificial pawn. Of all the people in the field it would probably be paxter her hates the most
