"Would that your mother had true knights to protect her." He paces slowly while Laena speaks, shaking his head when she says she should not have been born. "The Seven do not place us without purpose. But can they cannot claw back the free will they they have granted us, nor interpose every time a man wills his hands to evil. Instead, they gave us the Seven-Pointed Star to guide and holy knights to protect."
The thin, dark-eyed septon swells up a bit, as he is prone when speaking of hellfire and sin. "Your mother dines in the Father's golden hall, feasting with the Gods themselves. Aegon twists forever in a ROARING INFERNO! It is in the hereafter that the scales are balanced forever!"
"Until then, all we can do is labor to see that the virtuous are spared and the sinful punished before life fades from our eyes. But mortal fate is held in mortal hands. This is why I strive so hard to see power marshaled in service of faith and virtue, instead of where it stands today. Even now, I make design on Merryweather, a task that would prove more agreeable if the septons present had steel of our own to call upon."He glances away, perhaps realizing that he has peeled back a bit too much of the holy curtain.

Laena does not correct the Septon's assumption about her mother's location. He may even be correct - she'd never dared to try and find out. She still saw her often enough in her nightmares.
"This whole brewing war is about a handful of lords losing a fraction of their power." Laena sighs. "I cannot imagine the scale of the conflict that would explode should you wrest the power of final judgement from all lords." She considers a moment. "It would most likely start in the North." She shakes her head, breaking her chain of thought. "It doesn't matter.
"I agree with your diagnosis, Septon, but while bloodletting is a common cure, I do not believe in your solution. We are still in the opening stages of what I can only see as the latest civil war, and see no reason to already start laying the groundwork for the next one." She speaks softly. "I'm sorry, but when we both look at the concept of 'holy men', you focus on the 'holy' part, while I have trouble seeing past the 'men'."

"The Faith historically held the power of final judgment only over their own. I would extend it no further. The rest is for kings and lords, though they may delegate to septons. But as you say, I fear our impasse cannot be erased without one of us making a leap of faith." He waves toward the briar archway ahead, the portal separating the hedge from the rest of Highgarden, and blissful debate from harsh realities.
