While the archery contest is open to the smallfolk, there is a restriction that one must bring one's own bow (all PC's are assumed to be able to borrow one) in order to compete so that only such folk as can be assumed to know how to use it will take part. Further, it is considered unseemly for women to compete, so any ladies being found out taking part suffers -1 chivalry and -1 influence, but it is easy enough to pass for a boy that a deception(disguise) TN 9 will suffice to pass muster.
The archery contest is simple enough, three shots are allowed each round, simple failure means that you hit the straw doll but not the painted circle around it's heart, 3 total DoS while avoiding any critical failures are required to proceed to the next round, in the first round the TN is 9, the target is moved ever further away, increasing the TN by 3 each round until it reaches 15, all characters beating this round proceeds to the final.
In the final round, each character again receives three shots, now against TN 18, the character with the highest total DoS across these three shots is declared the winner, but critical failures are straight misses, so number of arrows hitting the doll are counted first.
All tests uses Marksmanship (Bows), bonus from superior equipment applies (but also training penalties if any) with +1b from aiming.
Upping the Ante: There is also a smaller target painted on the doll's head, aiming for that increases the TN by 3. In the first three rounds, successfully hitting this target once means direct qualification to the next round, while in the final round, successfully hitting this target counts as having landed an additional DoS.
Rewards:
First place: +1 glory, +1 influence, victory purse worth 1 coffer and a Goldenheart Longbow (as superior, but with half again normal range).
Proceeding to the final round, hitting the straw doll on each shot and score 3 or more DoS total (excluding winner): +1 influence, a Superior Longbow and share a purse of 200GD
Needing only one shot in each of the first three rounds to proceed AND hitting the target on each shot in the final round: +1 glory
Hit the head target on all shots: Lord Tyrell has staked a rare Dragonbone Longbow that nobody can manage this feat, he will not likely be too disappointed if he looses that bet.
