Its exciting to see how these rolls all play out, and how much a single + or - can matter. Let alone an extra d6. Seems a lot different than d20 games. Can anybody tell me how right or wrong I am here?

I'm a fan of the system, particularly with a few of the consistent tweaks this group applies to the system.
Some dramatic results, chance for PCs to steer things a bit with destiny too.

To me the biggest difference between d20 systems and roll and keep systems like this one is the probability curve of the die rolls. A single die roll is statistically flat, but multiple dice produce a bell curve. That means that extreme rolls are less frequent, and therefore more exciting.
I've recently been watching Critical Role (a Live-Play of D&D 5e by professional voice actors, I'm not up to date so no spoilers pls); for a while one of their sponsors was donating $100 to charity every time a player rolled a natural 1; several times that added up to over $1000 in a single 4-hour session. 5% adds up fast when so many rolls are made.
For comparison, the 5% mark of 4d6k3 is 7; Above the 'routine' success rate of TN 6 and not far from the 'challenging' TN of 9 (about a 90% success rate). In many ways this is a success-based system; It's not hard to succeed at basic things, but getting extraordinary results (3-4 DoS) can often be quite challenging if not in an area of strength. In combat for instance, it's not hard to hit and armored foe, but if you are not skilled (Fighting 4+) or strong (5+ Damage per DoS) it may be difficult to get a significant blow. On the other hand, a single lucky hit (4 DoS) might defeat a less hardy foe (Endurance 3) in one hit.
In the rules as written it is pretty easy to make a character that has ridiculously high combat stats (9d6k7 attack rolls for 10 damage per DoS are possible for a starting character!), which has given the system a reputation for 'rocket tag' combat - whoever hits first wins. That's a big reason why there are so many house rules in place. The ability to power-game is significantly diminished and several 'trap' options have been improved to be useful.

Both Legend of the 5 Rings and Chronicle system are great roll and keep system and a needed change from the d10 and d20 systems. I also enjoy the homebrew changes, even if I probably don't remember them all every time and have to go back to find and read them again.

Big fan of the classic L5R system too, not a big fan of the new L5R because (as typical with Fantasy Flight) it uses their proprietary dice.
Did anyone play in the L5R winter court games? They were basically massive versions of the various Asoiaf games we've run, with c80 players and a whole staff of GMs!

I used to play L5R with some actor friends back in 3rd/4th ed (I think? black books then grey books). Good fun. I know some of them played in winter court LARPs, but I don't know if they ever did play by post.

So this is a pretty simplish game in the Android store. If people were willing to use it it might make an interesting background image
