Maester Perwyn of Highgarden has had Lord Tyrell's smallhall (which is bigger than any grand hall elsewhere in the Reach save for that of The Hightower) set aside for a full day for the attended maesters to come together and present any findings of their own and discuss the latest research from the Citadel.
A maester may merely attend or he may actively engage, all challenges in this event are optional:
Restricted Event:
You cannot partake in this event if you join the hunt.
Only chained maesters will be permitted inside, others attempting to pass off as a maester requires success on the following tests:
Deception (Disguise) TN 9 (TN 12 if a woman)
Deception (Bluff) TN 9
Knowledge (streetwise) TN 9 (To find a house not present)
In addition, each time a false maester participates in a challenge requiring him to speak up, he must also succeed on a deception (act) TN 9.
Simple failures on any of these tests means that you manage to beat a fortuitous retreat in the confusion before being found out, critical failure leads to discovery and -1 influence. The challenges are done in order, so a false maester can participate up until the point he fails one of these tests.
A false maester cannot gain any influence.
Challenge 1: News from the Citadel.
Archmaester Walys, Seneschal of the Citadel, briefs the assembly of the newest findings of the maesters. Much of what he has to say is rather tedious material, he was never a great presenter and he knows not the real world outside the academic realm of libraries, laboratories and studies.
Knowledge (Education) TN 12
Status (Stewardship) TN 12
Will (Dedication) TN 12
Success on all three tests: Your house gain +1b on it's house fortunes for the next downtime period (once per house).
Challenge 2: News from the Red Keep.
Maester Lamprey, assigned to assist the aging Grand Maester Alford at the Red Keep, presents his views of the state of the realm, though it ignores some subjects, such as the issues caused by the late King Aegon IV, it is highly informative, providing a glimpse into the major events happening outside the Reach and such laws and reforms that are being worked on by the king and his small council.
Awareness (Empathy) TN 12
Cunning (Logic) TN 12
Knowledge (Education) TN 12
For each 3 DoS, identify a "pressure point" that could be exploited in house politics, choose which:
1. Investigative opportunity for blackmail.
2. A lord sitting on the fence between Daeron and Daemon, or might be persuaded to defect from his side.
3. Ways to gain favors in King's Landing.
Challenge 3: Independent Research.
Here is the chance for the attendant maesters to present such research as they may have conducted on their own.
Language TN 12
Persuasion (Convince) TN 12
Critical failure means nobody understands the presentation, each DoS grants +1 to the final test.
Knowledge (Research) TN 21, +1D for taking extra time is allowed (research is assumed to be conducted prior to the chronicle).
The disposition of the attendant maesters towards you improves by +1 per DoS. Additionally, if you beat TN 18 before accounting for the bonuses to the presentation, your house gains a permanent +1 bonus to house fortunes.
Critical Failure: General ridicule, you and the members of your house suffer -1D on all tests influencing other maesters for the remainder of the chronicle.
Special: If the attendant maester does not attempt the research test, another character may attempt the TN 18 test for the House Fortune Bonus
Challenge 4: The discourse
Ordinarily a scholarly debate such as this is a long winded leisure activity for maesters, enjoying the chance to match wits with others of high intellect. This time, however, the topics such as the great councils of the past, the dance of the dragons and the sons of Aegon the Conqueror serve merely as allegories for what is truly discussed.
Awareness (Empathy) TN 9
Cunning (Logic) TN 9
Knowledge (Education) TN 12
Language TN 9
Simple Intrigue (Convince) TN 9
Success on all tests: +1 influence
Each 10 DoS scored: +1 influence, +1 Blood or Fire
