House Blackbriar traces it's origins to the Andal hero, Ser Roland Blackbriar, who brought the light of the seven to the eastern stretches of the Reach, felling a giant in single combat among other things. Ever since, House Blackbriar has been known as a pious house, ever friendly to the faith. Almost destroyed by King Maegor the cruel, as no adult male did not join the Warrior's Sons, and Gyldenhaal was burnt to the ground by Balerion, the line was later restored by King Jaehaerys. It is said that any Blackbriar son not suited for knighthood have been given to the seven to become septons, any exceptions has been ruthlessly stricken from the records it is whispered. While they have sometimes been accused of being zealots, and rightly so at times. They have supplied the Warrior's sons with many commanders in times past, and three member of the Kingsguard after their disbandment, though two of those were appointed by King Baelor and it is alleged that they were better at praying than fighting.
The Blackbriars have never much been overly fond of their Starkwood neighbours, though clashes has been few, during the Dance they joined the greens, declaring that the gods had decreed that a son inherits before a daughter. Lord Arlyn and most of his knight fell among the trees, Mushroom gave him a mention in his memoirs as a man who would fare much better if he had only devoted a tenth of the time spent studying the Seven Pointed Star to learning strategy. There is some resentment, but as maester Rossart of nearby Goldengrove once remarked, "it is difficult to loathe someone who are as honorable as the finest knight". Today, the steady hand of Lord Jon Blackbriar has ensured peace and quiet throughout the turbulent reign of King Aegon IV, of which Lord Jon never held in high esteem.
House Blackbriar in the game:
Blackbriars are pious firsts, knights second, and are fairly average for the Reach beyond that (though their forces have been known for bravery bordering on fanaticism if properly motivated), having fields of wheat as far as the eye can see from their castle, just like dozens of other Reacher Lords. What makes them interesting is that there are disagreements as to what piety entails. Lord Jon is a man of peace and quiet favoring order, good governance and thus most likely Blood, though there are many conservative men at Gyldenhall, fearful of the change that King Daeron brings, many of them knights, those might well favor the seven's cleansing Fire. to be brought upon the Dornish and other men who have pushed away the chivalry that safeguards the King's court.
