After the Bread and Salt ceremony, Leana manages to catch up with Ashara as they leave with the slowly milling crowds. "Hāedar. So, it's official now." Her voice is carefully neutral. "I know it may seem frightening now, but trust me: everything will turn out well in the end." On impulse, she gives the younger woman a warm hug. "I promise." she whispers into her ear with a quiet intensity.
Releasing the hug, her tone turns lighter. "So, how did things go with you, other than that, in the ceremony? Meet anyone interesting?"

After the Bread and Salt ceremony, Leana manages to catch up with Ashara as they leave with the slowly milling crowds. " Hāedar. So, it's official now." Her voice is carefully neutral. "I know it may seem frightening now, but trust me: everything will turn out well in the end." On impulse, she gives the younger woman a warm hug. "I promise." she whispers into her ear with a quiet intensity. "I am not frightened. I know this will end well enough. I can handle this." The tone of her voice is such that it is clear she left a word unspoken 'I can handle this myself'. It is less clear whether she truly believes what she said or is trying to convince herself. Releasing the hug, her tone turns lighter. "So, how did things go with you, other than that, in the ceremony? Meet anyone interesting?" "That Septon from Gyldenhaal approached me. We spoke a buit about wedding benedictions, and I think my answers pleased him. He told me of some vile rumors about me, but pledged he would speak out in my defense. He seems a good man, if a bit zealous. I shall be sure to seek him out in the future, if he keeps his word." I truly hope he does."I sought out House Cordwayner. Lord Ilyn was surprisingly nice. Like a beaten puppy that still seeks affection. Lady Maegelle was... courteous. As I expected. Ser Quentin... was..." She struggles to find the right word, then gives up. "He is a knight of the Reach, with all that entails. Pretty enough to look on I suppose, but lacking in substance. I've had better conversations with my horse." She snorts. "So no, other than the Septon I did not meet anyone particularly interesting. I hope you had a more enjoyable evening?"

"I am not frightened. I know this will end well enough. I can handle this." "Of course you can. But there's no shame in turning to family to make the handling easier. After all, I'm sure you *could* knit with just your fingers, but that doesn't mean it isn't easier when you use knitting needles." "That Septon from Gyldenhaal approached me. We spoke a buit about wedding benedictions, and I think my answers pleased him. He told me of some vile rumors about me, but pledged he would speak out in my defense. He seems a good man, if a bit zealous. I shall be sure to seek him out in the future, if he keeps his word." "I met him earlier, in the Sept. For what it's worth, I feel he's the type who will follow through on his word." Ser Quentin... was..." She struggles to find the right word, then gives up. "He is a knight of the Reach, with all that entails. Pretty enough to look on I suppose, but lacking in substance. I've had better conversations with my horse." Laena holds back a snort. "Ah, but Morgan is such a good conversationalist! An attentive listener, won't judge you, and will keep every confidence given. Really, there are few people who can live up to those standards." She snorts. "So no, other than the Septon I did not meet anyone particularly interesting. I hope you had a more enjoyable evening?" "Most definitely." she answers, quiet enough to be part of the normal conversation, but with a changed pitch so as to be easily overheard by the milling crowds. "I met both Ser Balon Blackbriar and his father, both of whom certainly lived up to their reputations. But really, I was most impressed by Lord Marq Durwell. When you have a man so surrounded by rumour, you assume he could never live up to it. He did. He did, and then some. Intelligent, charming, knowledgeable, well-mannered, the very soul of chivalry, and most of all, interesting. I can well understand why he has so many admirers. From what I saw this evening, they are well-earned." Marq'd Woman - Spreading Rumour: 6d6k4+7 24Rumour planted, they continue their conversation while drifting away from the crowds, for a measure of privacy.

After all, I'm sure you *could* knit with just your fingers, but that doesn't mean it isn't easier when you use knitting needles." Ashara knew better than to argue with her cousin. The slightly older woman was, as usual, right. Of course, Ashara didn't have to give her the satisfaction of admitting it, either. "Ah, but Morgan is such a good conversationalist! An attentive listener, won't judge you, and will keep every confidence given. Really, there are few people who can live up to those standards." "Cousin, Morgan is beautiful, swift, and gentle, but somewhat lacking in vocabulary... and so contrary! No matter what I say it's 'neigh neigh neigh'. A girl likes to be told she is right once in a while." "Most definitely." she answers, quiet enough to be part of the normal conversation, but with a changed pitch so as to be easily overheard by the milling crowds. A girl likes to be told she is right once in a while." Laena gives a small snort at the jest, but carries the joke no further. "Well then, is he a... prospect? Have you offered him your favor for the joust? You know how much men like that sort of thing." Laena frowns. "Honestly ... I'm not sure. He seemed interested in me, so I hope he is a prospect, but so have plenty of other women, and they have inevitably been disappointed." She shrugs. "I have made clear that I am interested, but if he wishes to sample the dough, he must buy the bakery. Given the reputation surrounding those of natural birth, I did not wish to give the wrong impression. It is up to him if he desires me under those conditions or not. "As for the favour? If he asks, I'd be a fool not to give it, but I have not offered it yet. Attend well, Hāedar: men do not value that which they did not have to struggle to attain. If he's not prepared to even ask me for my favour, then he is not prepared to value me for my virtues." And I am not the kind of woman who will idly accept being taken for granted.

Ashara nods. Again, Laena was right. It could be so very annoying how often that was true, but her advice was always worth listening to. Sometimes fun to ignore, but always worth listening to.
"I do not believe that Ser Quentin or Lady Maegelle value me."
She looks around to make sure there were no eavesdroppers, and drops her voice so much that her .
"I suspect that the rumors we have heard are true. I have no real evidence though."
Raising her voice to normal, she continues on as if she hadn't said anything else.
"Well, if he doesn't ask for your favor then he is a fool. You are easily twice as worthy as any other lady he might wed."

"I do not believe that Ser Quentin or Lady Maegelle value me." Laena gives a vicious grin, and squeezes the younger woman's shoulder reassuringly. "They do not value you *yet*. With time and attention, we will correct them." "I suspect that the rumors we have heard are true. I have no real evidence though." Laena nods. "The truth will out, one way or another." she says, as if continuing on her previous statement. "Well, if he doesn't ask for your favor then he is a fool. You are easily twice as worthy as any other lady he might wed." Laena smiles, chuckles, and tosses her hair back. "Now you are spoken for, that may well be true." Her tone is light, but definitely carries a pleased air.

"I never even considered myself as a candidate for his affections."
She frowns, thinking back on her conversation with Lysette Starling. Even if I were not betrothed, I would not be interested in him.

Laena mock-growls. "Learn to take a compliment in the spirit it was meant, rather than nitpicking little details." She sniffs. "Ser Quentin will be giving you plenty more if he knows what's good for him, and that's the sort of behaviour you should be encouraging."

"Oh! I didn't mean it like that. It's just that..."
She drops her voice again.
"I don't want to get married to Ser Quentin, or Lord Marq... or anyone, really."

Laena drops her voice in response, and looks Ashara right in the eyes supportively. "And you won't be, I promise. You and me, we'll handle it. But you can't make it *obvious*, or it reflects badly on the house. So you play along, for now, keeping your eyes and ears open, accepting compliments and biting back retorts. Until we find the lever. Then we use that lever to crack this deal apart, leave the Cordwayners in the mud, and we come out smelling like sweet, innocent roses." She smiles at her. "So smile, the world is watching, and you're just happily going along with things, with no idea of any shocking revelations coming in your future. Okay?"

"I don't..."
'...need your help'- or at least that's what I want to say, but... do I? I don't really care if I do shame the house, except that it would hurt Symon and Laena's chances of a good marriage... and I certainly don't want to do that.
She nods.
"I am playing along as best I can. I suppose that means I had better be ready to give a favor to Ser Quentin."
She grimaces at the thought.

Laena gives her a quick, supportive hug. "Thank you. Nothing of worth is achieved without sacrifice. You making small sacrifices now ensures others pay the bulk of the bill come the denouement. Remember that, and let it soothe the sting your actions cause you now."
I think we're just about done here. If you don't raise anything new in your response, I'm happy to call /scene
