"Ah, our new daughter to be, the most enchanting Lady Ashara. Lady Maegelle Cordwayner's manners are impeccable, but there is no concealing the falsehood of her friendliness to Ashara's trained eye. "My Lady, Lord Ilyn and I are truly looking forward to extending our humble family, are we not, dear?" Lord Ilyn's shy smile seemed a much more genuine greeting, one might think that. "Ye-yes, very much, uhm, delighted, my lady." Maegelle seems to decide that is enough talk from her husband. "I hope we might lay claim to the lady's attention for long enough for Ser Quentin to rejoin us, our daughter insisted that he introduce her to Ser Roland Redwyne and did not wish to wait, the young lady seems to know all of our soft spots all too well." In perhaps a rare moment of defiance, judging by Maegelle's reaction, Lord Ilyn adds a little quip. "I think it is, uhm, clear, to see which side of the family she got that from."

Ashara had not expected true friendliness from Lady Maegelle. Well, but that was fine. It's not like she particularly liked Lady Maegelle, either. She had not been expecting the quip from Lord Ilyn, either. I think I like him. He's nice. Like a puppy. A poor whipped puppy. A pity that 'nice' is an invitation for abuse in the Reach.
Ashara smiles back at Lady Maegelle, as fake as the lady's friendliness, but hopefully better concealed.
"Certainly my lady, I am eager to meet your son, perhaps even more eager than your daughter was to meet Ser Roland." Thought probably not for the same reason.
"While we wait, perhaps you can tell me about him? Surely no one knows him as well as you."

"My lady ought to know that according to his mother, her son is the most fabulous young man in the world, perhaps only matched by her other sons, but I have only been blessed by the one, so I would not know." Maegelle's humility is like that of any well trained noble bird as Lady Allyria once described them, all a front, while the social mores in Dorne were not all that different in Dorne when it came to what a noble lady ought not do, they tended to speak in much more vibrant and less rehearsed fashion. "Though I dare say that while I am very proud of Ser Quentyn, it is justly so. As gallant and talented knight that any mother could ever wish for, he squired for Lord Redwyne and truly, it is on the Arbor that they make the very best knights, no offense to our present host of course, but it is plain to see just by counting the number of Redwynes that are featured when all these knights places wagers on who might emerge as champion."

How dull. 'Gallant and talented knight'? Half the men in the room meet that description... and most of them are not worth wasting breath talking about. Maybe I can prod her into saying something actually worth listening to.
"Of course, my lady. Any House that can boast a member of the Kingsguard is certainly deserving of respect. Did you know I have a cousin in the Kingsguard, on my mother's side?"

"Indeed I do, my lady. Though I would not mention the Sword of the Morning too freely, most of the knights in attendance would prefer not to be reminded that there are knights of Dorne every bit as capable as they are, and they are sure to think them lacking in gallantry, sending out their daughters to serve as each others mistresses and other such nonsense." She leaves an impression of feeling superior to the fools all around her, surely an exaggeration. "Ser Quentyn is not quite of the caliber one would expect that a member of the Kingsguard to have, though he is not far from it, or so Ser Normyn assures me, I am hardly the best judge of martial prowess. Lord Redwyne trained him well, and in particular instilled in him a dedication to always seek improvement in all that he does, which is the most important skill of all."

Ashara drops her voice a little in feigned embarrassment. "Forgive me, my lady - having spent the past years in Sunspear I had forgotten how easily some Reachmen's pride may be pricked. As for the Dornish practice of taking paramours, I know of none who had not chosen it for themselves. The same cannot be said for the mothers of some of the fine knights here today."
She tilts her head ever so slightly in the direction of Bittersteel.
"As for Ser Quentin and the Kingsguard, I would hope he has no aspirations to don the white! I fear I would be ill-suited for the life of a silent sister."

"My lady and I are very much of a mind on that particular matter." Maegelle agrees. "Though as I recall, Lady Barba entered King Aegon's bedchambers quite willingly, and even helped groom her little sister to supplant Melissa Blackwood as his mistress. There were many a lady that found his power attractive, certainly in the earlier years of his reign when he still retained some of the handsome looks of his youth, others were lured by the influence they could wield by appealing to the passions of a king who were ruled by them. Though granted, there is scarce a lady that dares defy the king's orders, and even if she did, a king can usually enforce his will even so. And many a lord and knight are rumored to take liberties with the smallfolk, my son not among them I am happy to report."

"Oh I am sure she did, and before that went into the maidenvault of her own desires as well."
It takes a great amount of will for Ashara to resist rolling her eyes.
"I am glad to hear that your son is not one to... take liberties. Faithfulness to one's spouse is a sacred duty, would you not agree?"

"Very much so, my lady." Maegelle agrees, though her attempt to appear friendly fails to fool Ashara, at Sunspear they had thought ways to detect lies that few Northrons had learned to guard themselves against. "My father once bid me break a twig, it snapped easily in the hands of a little girl, then he gave me six, one for each of us, for him, my mother, my two brothers and my sister and me. He bid me break them all at once, and I failed completely. A family that stands united cannot be broken, my lady."

Subtle, Lady Maegelle, but not subtle enough. Is there more to this?"Loyalty to one's family is truly a wonderful thing, Lady Maegelle, though I was speaking of the bond of trust between husband and wife, not family writ whole. Adultery, as it were." Ashara trains all her senses upon Lady Maegelle reaction, seeking any sign of... anything. Awareness(Empathy): 6d6k4+3 22

"That my lady, is exactly such a thing as makes a family be split, and then one bye one." She demonstratively snaps her fingers three times in quick succession, her response takes on a chilled hue, most would likely not have noticed if they were not looking for it. Though it is difficult to say whether the comment hit a sensitive spot or if lady Maegelle feels insulted, it is plain that she very likely might be disposed to view such pointed questions as probes against her dignity and virtue.

I seem to have hit a sore spot there. I doubt Ser Ilyn would have the temerity to stray, so that would mean... Well, enough of this for now.
"Yes, that is certainly true. Thankfully, if your son is all you say he is - and I have no doubt that he is - such will never be an issue. I am not certain which I think is worse - men who ignore their duty to their illegitimate children, or those who bring them into their homes and expect their wives not to take umbrage. I have never understood why so many men expect virtue from women yet cannot be bothered to do the same. They say we are the weaker sex, but morally I think quite the opposite is true."

The conversation goes on, stiff and formal, Maegelle does not much like Ashara and is at pains to hide it, eventually they are joined by Ser Quentyn and Lady Denyse, the good-sister to be curtsies expertly and delivers a most polite and correct greeting, though her eyes speaks volumes of her opinion, "Oh, so you're the Dornish harlot he is to marry. He'll enjoy fucking you, but that must be about all you're good for." She does not say another word until the precise moment courtesy allows her to excuse herself to see if she might find a knight worthy of her favor to wear in the joust, Ser Normyn, up until now silent and still like a statue, aside from hints of amusement at Maegelle's expense every now and then, breaks off from the group to be the shadowing chaperone.
Ser Quentyn is more likable, and at least he tries to be friendly, but he is the kind of man that one is like to only remember his good looks five minutes after leaving the conversation.

Ashara replies in kind with courtesies both real and faked, taking note of Ser Quentin's utter lack of anything remotely resembling a personality and Lady Denise's hostility.
And off goes Ser Normyn to play the concerned fath.... oh.
