Appleton Joust - Awareness (Alysanne Flowers) TN9: 3d6 9[OOC: Orokos/The Seven that are one wills it that Roland hears a damsel in distress and notices her rubbing her arm. A lady from from the songs! And we've got a fool from the songs too, even if he's thankfully burned off Naive by now.] They said a man was never the same again after going on campaign, and this was double so after a campaign in Dorne. Despite the din of the tourney and the clanking of his own exquisite plate armour, Roland was still wary enough to hear raised voices. He gestured to his squire Hugh Blackwood to cease his excited recital of the tactics of Roland's first opponent. He recognised Lady Jeyne Cuy's voice but not the tone. Rather than the playful mischief of Highgarden and countless tournaments in the Reach, it was a sharp, admonishing tone that reached his ears, then a unfamiliar voice clearly fighting back tears. "You need to act like a grown woman, and not some scared girl-child, above the shouts of the crowd, Jeyne's voice at once familiar and yet strange for its unusual tone. The less familiar voice was harder to make out, but was clearly fighting back tears. More as he drew closer. "Now that you are a woman you need to show some gratitude for the kindnesses done to you by doing your part part. After the unpleasantness in the Riverlands it would help both your cause and his if you considered Ser Simon Tarly." Now that he was nearer, Roland could make out the second woman's plea, "This is asking too much." Clearly frustrated with her charge, Lady Jeyne turned on her heel and began to stalk off. Frowning at seeing the young woman an injured wrist, Roland paused. "Is all well my lady? I did not know Lady Jeyne Cuy to be so short with the other ladies of the court at Highgarden, but the day is hot and tempers are frayed across the realm. None of us are at our best, although I shall need to be to triumph in the jousts with my namesake in the lists." Roland "Redtusk" Redwyne was a noted champion, the man who had knighted Roland was one of his few betters in the Reach of beyond. For if a man was among the best in the Reach he was naturally better than the knight in the other kingdoms. Suddenly a thought struck Roland. Have your wits about you man. Didn't Lady Cuy take in one of the Great Bastards? This may be more dangerous than any of the day's tilts if this is another Laena Pyre you're bandying words with.[OOC: Father, hope Alysanne and I haven't taken too many liberties here, I've sent Jeyne from the scene but Alysanne and I wanted to set things up for naming her Queen of Love and Beauty and try her in to some other plot stands as a new player. Alysanne - depending on how many words you want to exchange with Roland we can have a brief into scene here before she hurries off to follow Jenye/we rapidly send Roland on to his first joust and eventually naming Alysanne queen of love and beauty in a typical show of foolish gallantry, particularly given his betrothed's absence from the event. Or it can be a good chance to say hello! Roland can't take the safe option and just name Alicent when she's not around!]

Alysanne glared at Aunt Jeyne's retreating figure, hands now clenched into angry fists at her side. The green gown she wore was fitted nicely to a slight figure with the all the slenderness of youth and generous proportions of
men's fantasies. Golden hair framed a heart-shaped face, and a few rogue strands escaped their pinnings as if recently mussed. With a start, Alysanne turns toward Roland, green-eyes shining wetly, although her cheeks remained dry and flushed.
Knowledge:Education (Roland Cordwayner's identity) TN6: 4d6 keep 3 16[Always a favorite at tourneys, Alysanne is quick to recognize Ser Roland Cordwayner, to her instant dismay.]
Alysanne took in Roland's face and armor with all of it's heraldry in a glance, her face growing even pinker. Cursing inwardly, she thinks: *If Aunt Jeyne discovers that she was overheard by such a prominent knight, I will never hear the end of it...* Stomach sick with embarassment, she forced her lips into a sweet smile and approached, head shaking slightly as as if to dismiss his concern as unnecessary.
"Forgive that unseemly display," she spoke softly, leaning in close now so that her voice could be made out over the general din, but not carry to anyone else in the vicinity.
"My Aunt is a bit out of sorts, but nothing so serious as to require the attention of a knight of renknown. You are Ser Roland Cordwayner, are you not?"
Unconsciously she began to rub her wounded arm again, caught herself quickly and folded her hands modestly together instead. "I am Lady Alysanne Flowers."

[OOC: I think we can consider Alysanne fully knowledgeable of Roland's cast of characters background, and indeed to know that of late he seems markedly more ambitious and distrustful of the current Cordwayner leadership, including Alysanne's fellow Great Bastard, Normyn Flowers.] An injured dragon, in both spirit and body. A knight should offer aid to a lady in distress, but Roland had seen injured horses panic and do great harm to incautious knights. If a horse can wreak such havoc on a knight, what might an injured dragon do were it to lash out in distress?A booming response, happy to damn the state of his House and caring not who overheard such remarks, confident in the truth of his words. And more importantly, confident in his ability to defend his words with lance and blade. "I am indeed Roland Cordwayner. In happier times they said men knew a Cordwayner knight by his black hair against his white armour and cloak. Alas, neither are true now, to House Cordwayner's sorrow." Roland now bowed and lowered his voice from his usual story-book proclamations. "There is naught to forgive my lady. Ser Simon is scare worthy of his title and I would happily knock him from his seat were he darkening this tourney with his presence." "You have but to say the word at a tourney where such a disgrace to knighthood demands your favour and I shall discourage further efforts at the end of my lance. A true knight does not need more reasons to unhorse Ser Simon. But nor will he discourage such where they are offered." Truth be told, Roland was keen to make an example of Ser Simon, their rivalry going back many years since the Dornish wars. It was but three years since Roland had unhorsed Ser Simon in a tilt but dismounted to continue the bout with swords, enraged at receiving a scar from a blow aimed at his helm. Appleton - Alysanne Flowers Knowledge TN9 (?) to know more about a Great Bastard: 3d6 11[OOC: Roland knows a little of Alysanne, "uncommon knowledge" but not major secrets as he didn't get an extra DoS]. "It gladdens me to know Lady Jeyne Cuy is still as I remember her." Roland went through his courtesies as he searched his memory for what he knew of the latest of Aegon the Unworthy's bastard to cross his pass. Truth be told, there had been scandalous rumours of Lady Cuy's conduct at Highgarden, and Roland had half a mind to believe it. He gestured. "This is my squire, Hugh of House Blackwood. I trust my lady will be able to call on either me or my squire, should she injure herself riding again and require advice on preserving his limbs to better enjoy the Reach's balls." Such counted as subtlety as far as Roland was concerned.

[ooc DM'ing Roland some extra tidbits of information for his roll.) Alysanne blanched at the mention of Ser Simon Tarly, openly dismayed that Roland had overheard so much. This man has inconveniently sharp ears. Aunt Jeyne will surely place the blame for her lapse of caution squarely upon my shoulders. But as Roland voiced his willingness to champion her virtue, the diminuative Dragon managed a tremulous smile. And when Roland introduced his squire, she spared him a glance and polite nod, quickly turning her attention back to the young Knight as she regained her composure. "Your chivalry surpasses even your reputation, Ser Roland. At the moment, I am more concerned with my Aunt's poor humor than Ser Simon's misconduct. Indeed, though his actions were shamefully uncouth, he may have been misled somewhat regarding my disposition toward him." Her voice takes on a slightly wry tone as she continues, "Since becoming a mother, Aunt Jeyne is more inclined to delegate to me many efforts that she might have once have taken on herself." A mischievous twinkle touched her eyes as she continued in a conspiratorial whisper: "Indeed, if it was in your power to improve my Aunt's temperament, that would be most welcome, but I fear that all of your skill at arms cannot deflect that woman's ire. She has kindly mentored me in the womanly arts these past years, and is sorely disappointed when she sees those efforts wasted." Alysanne paused, appearing dismayed at her own words, and colored slightly. "Again I must beg pardon, Ser Roland, for rambling like a child - there is something to your demeanor that inspires confidences. I am certain, however, that I can trust to your discretion?" Alysanne followed this statement with a rueful grin and hopeful tone. "And I am keeping you from your purpose. Please, do not let me detain you any longer, and my sincere thanks for taking a moment to raise my spirits." The young woman curtsied with grace, knowing that Roland would be called away at any moment, and hoped that she had made a good enough impression to mitigate any assumptions he might make based on her relationship with her notorious schemer of an Aunt, and her disturbing encounter with Ser Simon. It would not do to have this handsome and well-thought of Knight deem her calculating or promiscuous. Appleton - Alysanne Flowers Intrigue: Initiative Status (reputation): 4d6 16

Narrator note: It may seem more prudent to have Jeyne admonish Alysanne over finding no champion at all when Daena Flowers of about her same age attracted Redtusk himself to carry her favo and Marq Durwell presumably rides with the favor of "some lesser tart", which means a Great Bastard might have had a chance to get that one as a champion, and pre-tourney he was generally considered as one of the top 3 contenders.
Simon Tarly could *potentially* be utterly undesirable at this point in time (and even if he gets away from PC's efforts to geld him, he'll still be widely considered as scum now), so any attempts by Jeyne to make Alysanne be friendly with him may have to be pre-Blackwood/Bracken arch.

[OOC: cheers, it retconned, with Simon having come up in some other way to save a big rewrite!
The “why nobody to carry your favour?” Angle works well, particularly given who the other great bastards got, cheers.
Helps draw a new player in to ongoing plots and introduce Alysanme with a bit of a bang]

[OOC: retconned such that Jeyne is peeved that Alysanne has no one to carry her favor, Tarly mentioned peripherally, with contempt: "If you can't attract the notice of any man of good character, perhaps you should beg Ser Simon's pardon!" Whatever interaction that is referring to occurred prior to recent events.]
Lady Alysanne's smile is relieved, and genuine. It elevates her prettiness to something more akin to beauty. "I pray to the seven that this tourney marks another step toward that noble end. You have my best wishes, and I shall be cheering for you from afar." Appleton Joust: Charm vs ID (10) 4d6+2b 17 +1 for Compelling, vs DR 3 = 5 influence to Roland's Composure (7+1-3)

"My betrothed and I are separated by miles even if we are joined at the heart, so my lance bears no favour today. It is a relief to know that one of the Reach's maids will intercede for me with the Seven." "If your prayers bring the Warrior's strength to my arm it I would be a poor knight indeed if I did not remember them after my victory". Appropriately pious stuff from Roland as ever, but spoken with the conviction of a man of faith. And indeed one who often found the Warrior himself guided his arm. Objective: Make a good impression/quit and make it to his joust on time! Technique: Charm Intrigue Defense: 10 DR: Amiable Composure: 5/11 Frustration taken: 0/3 Florian: Intrigue R1 - Shield of reputation v passive Status (reputation + Virtue): 3d6+12 24Shield of Reputation: Make an Audience test vs your opponent's passive Status(Reputation)+Chivalry/Virtue, upon a success, your opponent's disposition towards you is treated as if it was one rank higher until the end of the intrigue. In addition, if the result of the intrigue does not alter the opponent's disposition in any other way and you have succeeded on a Shield of Reputation action, your opponent's disposition increases by one step. [OOC: is there a possibility your intrigue influence should be higher? If Aysanne is Awareness 4, then we're looking at 2 Degrees of success from 17 (which moves up to 19 including the +2 bonus from compelling) v Roland's 10 Inrigue defence, so 2x4 = 8+1 for compelling = 9 0 3 DR = 6? [OOC I do believe I miscalculated my damage, was just discussing this with someone else. It's been awhile, I apologize. My Status+Virtue is 6, so I have improved my DR by 1 below. Should it also affect her Composure, or is the result the improvement to DR only?] At the mention of Roland's "betrothed", Alysanne recalls hearing of the engagement with Lady Yronwood. Sadness again touches her eyes: Perhaps it is my fate to become acquainted only with scoundrels, or good men who have already been claimed. Lady Yronwood had better hold tight to this one - he seems too noble for this world.Biting her lower lip, Alysanne unties a ribbon from her hair, and holds it in her palm gingerly, offering it toward Roland. "Do you wish, then...unless I am too forward in asking...will you carry my favor?" Uncertainty marks her speech and posture. The wrong response may break her like fine porcelain. Appleton Joust: Charm vs ID (10) 4d6+2b 20 [20 was my 6d6k4. can you help me calculate the damage? I know that I should be getting an improvement to your DR as well from Attractive, but perhaps you already took that into consideration. Roland bowed. "I would be a churl to turn down a token from the hand of such a lady." Ashara had not entirely converted Roland to the cause of the smallfolk, he maintained much of the typical noble attitude to lesser men. Seven knew what he thought of the women... "We shall not detain you further, nor shall we bring your emblem disgrace in the lists." With a smile, Roland motioned for Hugh Blackwood to follow him after any parting words from Alysanne. [OOC: no need for apologies! There are a number of house rules in place that have been carefully considered by the narrator but can increase the learning curve. Virtue: I think the bonuses apply only to characters qualifying for Knightly Chivalry, rather than Virtue? greatbastards.boards.net/thread/11/chivalry-virtue I think this was to help knights in intrigues as they tend to have to spread their experience around while most noblewomen can just focus on intrigue. Attractive: shifts Roland to top end of Amiable even before the intrigue results. greatbastards.boards.net/thread/17/intrigue- Influence for Alysanne's charm is 4 (?) Awareness, +1 for compelling = 5 base influence damage. So in Round 3, Alysanne gets 20 on her 6d6k4, +2 for compelling, +1 for her Disposition (as Roland's Shield of Reputation has shifted her to Amiable. She's now got lower DR but gets a bonus to per intrigue roll, a tradeoff!). That's a total of 23, or 3 degrees of Success against Roland's Intrigue Defence of 10. 3 (degrees of success) x 5 (base influence with Charm) = 15 damage - 3 DR = 12 Damage. Roland could 3 frustration to reduce the influence by 3 x 3 (his Will) = 9. Taking Frustration reduces your intrigue defence, so Roland would be even easier to intrigue against now! After that Roland could trying his own intrigue action, or offer a negotiated Yield or even Quit! I like "Quit" as it retains the option to stalk from the scene with attendant social consqueneces. However, here it makes sense for Roland to take defeat. If I was nervour about a future intrigue, I might offer a yield with the normal benefits to Alysanne (disposition increase) without the +1D to future intrigues, holding the threat of Quitting the intrigue instead. While that makes sense in some circumstances it certainly isn't in character for Roland here! Objective: Make a good impression/quit and make it to his joust on time! Technique: Charm Intrigue Defense: 10 DR: Amiable Composure: 0/11 Frustration taken: 0/3 Roland is defeated End result for Roland: Charm: Improve disposition by one step for each rank in charm (minimum one). Alysanne has +1D to Persuasion and Deception in next intrigue against Roland. End result for Alysanne: Shield of Reputation increases her disposition towards Roland by one Step.]

.Roland's fingertips lightly brushed Alysanne's palm as he took the ribbon from her hand. The radiant smile she gave him was all the thanks a noble knight could ask for. As she watched Roland depart, Alysanne's spirits soared. She knew she should find her seat next to Jeyne Cuy, who would be surely be pacified upon hearing that Ser Roland carried her favor. How easily that was accomplished, and with none of the premeditation or machination that Jeyne promoted! But Alysanne acknowledged that was fortune smiling on her this day - she was not so naive as to believe that most men were so gracious and gallant as Ser Roland.
Walking to where she thought Jeyne would be waiting, she sighed inwardly, knowing that if she were ever to loosen her Aunt's hold on the reins guiding her destiny, then she, Alysanne, would indeed need to steel her resolve and become more like Jeyne than she wished to be. You are not the 'plain Dragon' any longer, Alysanne reminded herself, straightening her posture and tucking a stray lock of gold behind one ear. That freedom you yearn for requires power, and to gain power, you must wield the weapons you have without hesitation or reluctance. Next time, I will not flinch from the distasteful nor act the wallflower I once was. What must be done, will be done.
