Roland was familiar with Ser Preston, having attended many jousts alongside the talented knight and hoped to have some insight as to his likely approach. Indeed, the two had struck up something of a friendship over the years, albeit one forged from in the main from shared sorrows. The would be heir to Hammerhal had progressed well in the tournament, but had fallen below his own high standards so far. By the Seven, he would need to right that if he were to progress any further! Ser Preston is a talented warrior and capable horseman, not as good a jouster as Roland, but good enough to take advantage of any opening given him to cause an upset.

Ser Preston may not be Roland's equal in skill, but he makes up for it by a clever counter, ramping up the risk for Roland to be defeated by his own hubris, or so Lady Maegelle surely would see fit to put it.
PR: 19 (22 on 2nd pass, which would have won him the match if Roland had rolled 26 again) AR: 10 (12) Health: 7/12 Preston N+HiS: 7d6k4+8 21 6d6k4-2 14 4d6 19Preston N+HiS+D3+EF: 7d6k4+7 23 6d6k4-2 14 4d6 13

Ser Preston does not fail to impress, but he can only keep up with Roland's skill for 3 passes. On the fourth pass, they clash mightily and Ser Preston's horsemanship fails where Roland holds his seat.
PR: 19 (22 with D3) AR: 10 (12) Health: 10/12 Preston N+HiS+D3: 7d6k4+5 23 6d6k4+1 18 4d6 12Preston N+HiS+D3+EF: 7d6k4+7 31 6d6k4-2 12 4d6 11Pass 4 got some 3 DoS exchanged....but his SiS does not hold up where Roland's does. That's some 30-13=17 damage for Roland to take, Preston is hurt even more badly, probably needs to pick up a wound, but irrellevant.

[OOC: doesn't Roland's P3 do 20-12AR = 8 Damage, inflicting an injury as Preston was already 7/12 Health and dropping Preston's P4 to 30 rather than 31, reducing it to 2 DoS? If not, wound and milk of the poppy suffice]

No, he switches away EF on 3rd pass, it's algorithm basically, 8 health or less: Not EF, 9 or more: EF.
