The entire campaign in the Riverlands was not what Daeron expected. He knew that it wouldn't be a bigger version of a melee at a Reacher tourney, but he had expected to see some gallantry on display from his foes rather than torched villages and butchered smallfolk. He knew that there was bad blood between the Blackwoods and the Brackens, but he had sorely underestimated how much the two houses just hated one another and he knew that this upcoming battle would be the nadir of chivalry in this campaign. Men would die here in the hundreds and stragglers would be ridden down in the thousands. Claims on knightly values were about to be challenged in ways that the Summer Knights of the Reach had never anticipated. Scanning the field he finally saw a point of light and chivalry as a handful of knights rode forward to challenge one another. The Hightower sigil was nearly universal in its recognition and Daeron recognized its bearer, Ser Dennis Hightower, an honorable knight who could be counted on to have a clean and fair fight and who's defeat would certainly yield ransom worthy of Oldtown's riches. The two of them had always been friendly towards one another since the Black Tourney, though Daeron was surprised to see him fighting for the Blackwoods when he had joined Bittersteel's team in the melee. "Hail Ser Dennis, it's good to see a true knight in the Riverlands, though I must say that I would have preferred to encounter you by my side than across the field."No matter his response, it was too late to convince him to change sides as Daeron dipped his lance and prepared his armored destrier for a charge.

What does PR: 19 (21) mean? OOC: Passive ride: 19 but think it might be following the jousting formula instead of combat formula for opposed charge? 21 is inc defensive bonus marked in my house mate’s orokos roll.

What Roland said. His PR is 21 for this pass. [OOC: in the name of helping out, the below may well apply instead: greatbastards.boards.net/thread/1266/combat"Opposed charges with lances that are not orderly one on one jousts are resolved as both parties charging at the same time, substituting their passive animal handling(ride)+shield bonus -4 for their combat defense, jousting maneuvers other than brutal may be applied, but any other jousting rules and effects (including tourney knight) does not apply. This is frequently how grand melees and trials by combat tend to start. If one rider uses a tourney lance and the other fails the stay in saddle test, his attack is considered to be an automatic miss if he wields a war lance."]

Daeron's hit is powerful, but his opponent is an expert rider, holding his saddle with ease before drawing Valyrian Steel. Wildfyre was a quick warrior, but Ser Dennis had a faster horse that day.

A little shaken from the lance charge, Ser Dennis still wields "Vigilance" with dangerous expertise, a skilled swordsman, perhaps not quite as capable as Daeron, but his sword may very well make up for the difference.

True to his epithet, Wildfyre swings his blade in a wide arc down on Ser Dennis’ helm. Although he considered his opponent a nominal friend, this was war and any foe worthy enough to wield a Valyrian Blade was one who needed to be dispatched quickly.

For a moment Daeron thought that the fight was still on as the edge of his blade was deflected off the tip of Ser Dennis’ helmet, a blow that would leave his ears ringing, but not stop such a talented opponent. However, it’s deflection rode down with the entire force of Daeron’s strike and dug deep into Ser Dennis’s shoulder before awkwardly yanking it out. Seemingly unbothered by the pain, Ser Dennis attempted to raise his arm to counter, but as Wildfyre removed his sword, Ser Dennis found his arm unmoving and both men gaped, wide-eyed, at the dark blood bubbling out of the deep wound. “Get this man to a maester!” Daeron barked before catching his opponent who was slipping fast from his saddle. Looking at the Hightower champion’s injury, he blanched as he realized that his furious strike had cloven more than just armor, but clean through bone and muscle as well. Only the most talented of healer would be able to save his life, but he doubted that there was any such hope for his arm. Slinging him across his horse he sped him back towards Bracken lines where he could hopefully be saved and only once delivering him to a healer did he bother to think what this would do to his expected ransom. Certainly with Vigilance in hand he would still be able to negotiate a fine reward, even if Ser Dennis was returned incomplete. LDiC-Chance-1=Death, 2=Drama: 1d2 2 Drama it is! Consequences: Ser Dennis is Maimed and loses his arm, but not his life Daeron will temporarily claim Vigilance until Ser Dennis is ransomed back.

"Well fought, ser, but I do believe Ser Dennis' squire followed him to the maester's tent, ser." Ser Aubrey Ambrose apparently does not share Daeron's opinion about his right to hold on to Vigilance for now, but is gallant enough to signal so merely by his eyes, no need to call attention to this hopefully momentarily lapse of judgement, young men high on victories may fall pray to foolish notions that would shame and dishonor them, a proper knight would offer guidance without causing confrontation. Though Ser Aubrey may be at a loss to explain why honor demands the prompt return of the sword, he would surely be capable of a far more noticeable reproach in a bid to shame Daeron to do what mere honor might not.

Daeron catches Ser Aubrey's gaze, but isn't so willing to give up such a glittering prize. "Certainly Ser there is no harm for me to use such a weapon in the battle that is now only minutes away. The Hightowers will have Vigilance returned to them, along with Ser Dennis at the conclusion of this conflict, naturally."

"Were you not anointed with the seven oils and charged in the name of the father to be just, ser?" Ser Aubrey seems to have an entirely different point of view. "If another man were to take your horse to ride into battle against your will, ser, I do believe you would call him a thief."
You'd be looking at a +3 ID against just trying to convince him to not to try and stop you methinks, a +12 if you actually want to try and shift his mind on the matter.

“You know well that I was, but I see nothing unjust about my intentions. The Warrior teaches us that victors are entitled to spoils, especially when earned in honorable battle. Do you think that the Hightower’s themselves forged this blade?” It too was the spoils of war for them once, I just have the sense to return it after this battle.”
(New) Objective: Convince Ser Aubrey to not stop me.
Does Avaricious give Daeron any similar bumps to his ID to not give up the blade?
