Turn just about any rock on the banks of the Mander and a dozen little scheming spiders will crawl away in search of some new shadow to hide in, the courts and halls of lords may be just as dangerous for a knight as it is on the battlefields, and in the game of thrones, there is no gallantry to prevent a lady from peril. And yet the game holds many allures, vengeance, justice, riches and power to name a few. Perhaps it is the secrets, the quest to learn hidden truths, to expose or control others. For each man and woman involved, there are at least as many motives in play. And far too many fail to heed the advice penned by the first lord Levalle, though considering how King Baelor burnt every known copy of this most cynical work, they might be forgiven not to even have read his words, among other snippets still quipped in certain circles one seems pertinent to the subject matter: "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead."
Restrictions: Only characters present in the Reach may participate, each character may take up to three actions in this event, which can be at the same location or different ones as desired. An "action" is generally defined as taking place in the same location and pursuing the same objective, so one might for example investigate the scene of the Blackbar attack, and ask pursue witnesses and leads in the surrounding area using the tests for investigating crime scenes, as well as approaching mover's and shakers and use cunning to make sense of it all.
NPC's to be featured: As per narrator inclinations. Players may feel free to suggests NPC's likely to engage in such activities.
Suggested places to go:
Starpike (Lord Gormon definitely must have something to hide)
Laughing Stream (More than a few things does not add up about Ser Farman)
Burnt down Inn (Who assaulted the Hastwyck's?)
Bitterbridge (Who might have attacked the Blackbar's?)
Longtable (Surely the pig must have damning skeletons in his closet!)
Hammerhaal (Did Lord Ilyn truly die by accident?)
Note: While the secrets of Oldtown would be very interesting IC, the present OOC list is considerably less exciting. It is certainly possible that spending an action here is well worth it (and possibly prompt the narrator think hard on it), but there is also a risk of being handed a list of blank results.
Discretion is the better part of valor:
You may optionally attempt to conceal your activities by testing one or more of the following, the TN's are usually 13, but may be higher or lower depending on what you are up to. This option would generally work poorly with approaching movers and shakers.
Deception (Disguise)
Stealth (Any)
Challenge:
If simply asking around, knowledge (streetwise) is the go-to method. This can also be used to simply ask around for random rumors (if so, location is unimportant).
If trying to gain access to movers and shakers and see what they know (this generally does not work with trying to conceal your interest):
Audience test
Simple Intrigue (any technique generally possible, but some will be more effective than others).
Putting together evidence and testimony to try and make sense of it is typically cunning (logic).
If investigating crime scenes, awareness (notice), knowledge (streetwise), survival (track) and warfare (tactics) are typically relevant.
Other methods might also yield results.
Twist
Instead of trying to uncover secrets or investigate a particular incident, you may attempt to do anything else you might fancy while "passing through the area", stealing a Valyrian Sword, kidnap a merchant, poison a lord, serenade a maid or any other sort of errantry. Consult with the narrator if interested. Particularly convoluted schemes might be best handled as a complex intrigue outside the scope of this event, perhaps with one action contributing towards it's completion.
Consideration for qualities:
Connections: Your daily use of connections can be used to gain one of the following: Hire agents through middlemen to perform a fourth action using agents with 3D+2B for all relevant tests. Hire agents through middlemen to take an action in your stead, using your abilities and specialties. Hire agents through middlemen to offer +2 assist on all tests for a single action. When using agents, chance TN 9 must be tested at the end of the action they participated in, on a simple failure they will give you up if caught, on a critical failure, the act of hiring them will enter the random rumor list. Spending 25GD or offering a minor favor to your connections grants +2 to this test.
Decadent: Attempts to compel engaging in distractions along the way, inflicting -1D on all tests associated with a single action, on a critical failure, this applies to all tests.
Lascivious: Attempts to compel engaging in distractions along the way, inflicting -1D on all tests associated with a single action, on a critical failure, this applies to all tests.
Prejudiced: Attempts to compel digging up dirt on at least one member on your list, on a critical failure, all your attempts must be spent on following your passion (more aggressive variants satisfies the drawback).
Proud: Using agents for a fourth attempt does not count as testing in your stead, otherwise it generally does.
Vainglorious: Attempts to compel engaging in distractions along the way, inflicting -1D on all tests associated with a single action, on a critical failure, this applies to all tests.
Vindictive: Attempts to compel digging up dirt on at least one member on your list, on a critical failure, all your attempts must be spent on following your passion (more aggressive variants satisfies the drawback).
