Audience with Lord Starling: 7d6k5+6-1 25 Yup, that's a pass. A few days after her conversation with Ser Daeron, Laena is set to leave House Starling. But before she does, there's a few things she wants to do. At this precise moment, she's about to thank her host for his hospitality. "Lord Starling." She curtseys. "I'll be leaving shortly, but I wanted to thank you for your hospitality over my stay. You have a very impressive house, which you must be deservedly very proud of. "I must say, I was particularly impressed by how well you've passed your virtues on to your knights. Ser Daeron successfully uncovering the man behind the Hooded Man, whose vile acts gave the Black Tourney its name, reveals a man wholly dedicated to the *truth*. In dark times such as these, such virtue is rare, and valuable."

Such is the nature of a true knight, Lord Starling declares proudly, pleased that his sworn sword showed such a dedication to uncovering the truth.

Laena examines his reaction, and her mouth opens in surprise. "Oh! He hadn't told you, had he? I'm sorry. I confirmed his findings to him a few days ago. I assumed he would have told you by now." She frowns. "Maybe I should have expected this. He seemed a bit bashful of his accomplishment - rather unlike him - presumably feeling that such un-martial feats are unbefitting of a knight. But really, who better than a knight to shine a light in dark places?
"Well, I won't completely steal his thunder. He did the majority of the work, he deserves to be the one to tell you what he found. If I may suggest, give him a few more days, maybe he was waiting for my departure, then quietly ask him what he found. The information is definitely worth your while to learn."
The decision to put her name behind Ser Daeron's findings, but not say what they were was deliberate. She wanted to see how he would react, not make his decisions for him.
With her task complete, unless Lord Starling has further words for her, she'll thank him again, and make her departure.

It is not like this hooded man had offended House Starling, Lord Willem remarks, that miscreant committed his foul deeds on the lands of Lord Tyrell. He would not steal the glory from is own knight, should Ser Daeron chose to arrest him and personal deliver him to Lord Leo for his rightly deserved justice.

Laena grimaces slightly. "Unfortunately, what we uncovered is nowhere near enough to convict a person of their stature. All we can do is quietly ensure that lords and ladies whose reputation and well-being we care about are informed, so they may guard themselves properly. To do otherwise would be negligent to the point of malice."

It is not the place of others to condemn a man behind his back without witnesses and evidence, Lord Starling declares. If one does not have enough conviction in a man's guilt that one cannot bring oneself to openly confront him, then maybe his guilt is not so assured after all?

Laena has to admit, she's rather baffled, though she doesn't show it. Once again, she's reminded just how strangely honourable people think to her. To willingly *choose* ignorance because the evidence is not solid enough to take to court, to let yourself risk dealing with such a man without even knowing to have your guard up, just made absolutely no sense to her. Her mind cast back to her talk with Lord Alliser - a man she had every reason to hate because of his ties with her despised father - and how of like mind they were, while the lord before her might as well be from the Far East for all the differences they had.
Ultimately, she'd tried to gently push him, and failed. To try and push further would risk leaving 'instigating' territory, and enter 'vindictive', and her brother hadn't wronged her, she simply wished to see how he'd act under pressure.
So, she shrugs, and stands. "Well, perhaps Ser Daeron understands that you'd sooner risk dealing with a lord so black-hearted unwarned than hear information that cannot on its own condemn the man in court, and that's why he's not told you.
"Anyway, I shouldn't even have said as much as I have, so I'll leave the matter there. Thank you once again for your hospitality, and best of luck to you and yours in future tourneys, to hone your blades still further for the trying times to come."
And with a final curtsey, she leaves.
