Malyk suspected that moving against a famous, powerful and eloquent 'Septon' in the very seat of the church's power would be difficult, if not impossible. Indeed, most of the levers of power were all in Abelar's favor. Those in a community protected their own, and if one Septon could be removed, any Septon could be removed. The Seneschal fully expected the noxious, venom-spewing Abelar to retain his title after these proceedings, but that did not mean he would do so without a fight.
First he tried to drum up some support against Abelar among the faithful. It was initially difficult at first. They had not been there, had not seen the carnage, had not witnessed the rows of upon rows of those hung afterwards, were not interested in a tragedy that took place so far away and did not effect them. Everyone mouthed great ideals and much sympathy, but their focus on their own lives meant they were just windy words, not held in their heart. It was only when they finally realized that such a thing could happen anywhere, including here, that they began to consider the potential consequences to them of men like Abelar's actions. In a world where fire burned, it was apt to burn without control or without consideration of who it burned.
Given his past dealing with Septons, he decided to try and persuade the Septas of the Tribunal. He hoped, as women, they would have more compassion towards the victims, or at least understand the potential danger Abelar presented. Septa Umma wouldn't even see him. Perhaps it was because he was a commoner, perhaps she had already made up her mind, perhaps it was because he was attached to House Levalle. Whatever the reason, he would gain no ally there.
Septa Corrine was more receptive to seeing him. Perhaps she wanted to hear his side, more likely it was Malyk's reputation preceded him and she was curious about the renowned Seneschal of House Levalle. Whatever the reason, he took the opportunity and seized it to the fullest. His empathy towards the victims was moving, his predictions that there would more and his fear of the harm to his beloved church entirely reasonable, his bravery to stand up for what he believed in obvious, and his words, if simple and direct (lacking the linguistic tricks of Abelar), were convincing. In a world full of lies and politics, if the church did not stand for the truth, who would?
When the Tribunal was convened, Malyk felt he'd done what he could given the limited time and resources he had. The rest lay with the Father and the Seven. Perhaps they would have a reason for Abelar to remain a Septon, perhaps as a tool in the coming war, or a crack to expose the corruption of the church and purge it. He could not second guess their purpose, he could only do what he felt called to do.
Spend a DP to convert to 21. 2DoS 4 points of popular pressure against Abelar.
Failed to get an audience.
Succeed at all tests, Shift Septa Corrine two steps against Abelar.

The TN's for swaying (and meeting) Corrine would be at +3 since you had taken than action once before.

That's a rather draconian interpretation since the Action with Umma was not so much taken as wasted. Adjust however you feel is necessary.

Whatever his motivations, Ser Eustace Daverhyl have come to the city of his liege lords to speak up against Septon Abelar. Maester Ronnel have found some pretext to visit with the Citadel, some might suspect that he is displeased that he no longer might count himself chief among Lord Ulbert's adviser. Ser Imry Levalle, in a foul mood for having been kept away from the lists by his liege lord senses an opportunity here. Seeing such controversy surrounding the trial, Lynesse avoids directly confronting a member of the tribunal or presenting herself before a crowd and preaching on Abelar’s behalf, as both could draw much unwanted attention. In truth she barely knows the Septon, and having been absent from the Black Tourney, knows less of his crimes than most. Still, with her uncles speaking so aggressively against the Septon, and Ser Sandor making a mockery of knightly honour in the brutal slaying of Ser Roland, she knows she ought do what she can. She encourages those around her with leading questions, reminding them that Abelar’s rage did not spring from empty air, and that such crimes do require justice. She wonders at her uncles' involvement in this affair, and what motivations they might have. It seems a great many irreligious and socially ambitious folk have made their way to the trial. When she does state her opinion clearly, she speaks broadly of her fears of the influence of such men over affairs of honour and justice. Oh for a time when the rule of law in the kingdom was decided with a stricter cleaving to ideas of honour, and men would be motivated by the Seven Pointed Star and chivalry, rather than deals struck in shadowed halls and behind crooked corners. Surely such dealings will only harden zealots and lead to more conflict. Playing Politics for Abelar. Seeing that the tides had begun to turn against Abelar, Daeron took his turn to take a stand against the septon. Though he might not have been as good of an orator as the man on trial he knew how to work a crowd and play politics. Most importantly he could back up his words with his sword. Daeron Preaches to the Masses "I am here to speak on this so-called 'septon', a man who would have you all believe that he is a true, if not unbending, servant of the gods; however, his actions prove otherwise. Should he remain a man of the cloth he would continue to incite the smallfolk and cause death and destruction.I was there at the riots. Both of them. I and others risked life and limb to save innocents from the frenzied mob, a mob that denied Lord Tyrell his right to pit and gallows when they murdered his prisoners. At the second riot I was forced to cut down over a score of smallfolk in order to save the innocent Lady Marianne and her son. How many more smallfolk must die because of his words?"Daeron Plays Politics"Knights and lords, I will not stand here and defend Lord Eldon, he is a vile man and will face justice in his own time. That said, it is not the place of a septon to act as judge, jury, and executioner. If we permit men like Abelar to trample on the rights of nobles then what power do we have? I respect the words of my worthy friends and fellow knights and I agree that Abelar must serve the gods if he is to have any chance of redeeming himself, but not as a septon. The Faith risks its legitimacy if it permits such men to go unpunished."Daeron Throws Down the Gauntlet"If any man disagrees with me, then I challenge them to face me with sword and lance and we will see whose convictions are strongest."

Post by Septon Abelar on Mar 26, 2019 3:30:35 GMT 1
Septon Abelar finds his way to Septa Ilana while she is directing some of the younger septas and septons to scrub the steps of the Starry Sept. He wordlessly takes a scrub-brush and begins scouring the stone with salt and vinegar, alongside the men and women half his age. When an appropriate opportunity presents itself, he finds himself in conversation with the septa. After providing the usual pleasantries, Abelar makes the case that a harsh penalty on him would cast the Faith in a bad light--after all, a judgment in his favor would be seen as a vindication of the loathsome Lord Merryweather. Such an endorsement would be unfortunate for the Faith, and would perhaps even call into question whether Merryweather's immense coffers were able to purchase his preferred verdict. The opposite result would leave no opportunity for such whispers; indeed, it would show that the Faith will not tolerate such wretched, sinful behavior on the part of a lord. Besides, Merryweather is not long for this world, given his corpulence, so there is little risk in enraging one who will be gone before the turn of spring, leaving behind no one of consequence to carry on his grudges. Better to have the man be remembered for his foulness and grudges with the Faith than his foulness and friendship with it. The Faith as an institution runs more risk in expelling Abelar (and possibly being seen as extending Merryweather an indulgence) than in keeping him, thereby spurning the already-hated lord. Post by Septon Abelar on Apr 7, 2019 3:16:46 GMT 1
When the time comes, Abelar stands from his chair and presents himself before the Tribunal. "Brothers and sisters of the Faith. I come before you as a humbled sinner." His face is more lined than it was before the Black Tourney, as if he aged five years over those twelve days. "It was thanks in part to my words that the Black Tourney became known as such. I spoke the words that roused the mob to attack Lord Merryweather's camp. Many were killed that day, including some of those dearest to me."He begins to pace the hall, his dark eyes slowly shifting among those present. "For that, Lord Tyrell tried me in his court of law. I could have faced an executioner's block, but instead, he banished me from those lands. Since then, I have walked the road of repentance, baring my sins before the Seven every day and chastising myself when needed." He does not go to detail, leaving this to his audience's imagination. "I set the mob on Merryweather because I saw evil before me and nobody was doing or saying anything about it. I went too far, but I cared. As your septon, I will always care. It is our place to say what is right and wrong, even when nobody else will. And if you'll have me, I promise I will be more measured in my sermons. But I will never go silent as long as I wear these robes." He looks at each of the Tribunal members in turn. "There is too much at stake. Too much sin and roguery plagues the realm for the Church to surrender the field. What would people think of us if we were to retreat to our monasteries and septries, leaving nothing to be said of virtue and vice? Our decline would be swift." His conviction rises as he speaks. "But I say: we should not go quietly into the night. Our place is at the fore of life in the Realm, not hiding behind the silent, oaken doors of our septs.""I thank the Tribunal for doing its duty."
By my count, I'm at a net of -4 popular pressure, resulting in +1 to the base TNs. [Phase 1] Tribunal Hearing Awareness (Empathy): 6d6k4 16 (1 DOS v. The Most Devout retires to Septon Roswyn's offices for consultations, with the two burliest members of the cloth in all of Oldtown blocking the stairwell for anyone too curious.
This is actually close enough that what Parmen and Lynesse manages can tip the scales of the outcome.
