A short while after the feast, Laena decided to take her children (and their attendants) for one final prayer at the castle sept. Maybe there would still be bodies laid out, which she could use to give a lesson to Sylvina about the necessity of thought before action.
Do as I say, not as I do.
Regardless, piety was an invaluable trait for a lady to seem to have, so regular visits to the sept were a sensible investment of time.
However, as she neared, their slow procession was caught up by a man walking in the same direction. Maybe to the same place, maybe further on. Perhaps because she didn't expect it, it took her a moment to place him. Ser Roland. Looking somewhat worse for wear after the melee, but still up and around. Seeing him reminded her of a rumour she'd heard in the stands while watching the melee.
"Ser Roland!" She greets him with a smile and a nod of greeting. "If rumour is to believed, you are soon to make Lady Alicent Yronwood a very happily married woman. Congratulations to you both. After all she's been through with Lord Eldon, she deserves a man like you."

Despite the battering from the melee on top of his injuries from overcoming Ser Rennifer, Roland looked as bright eyed and alert as before. Small wonder he outpaced Laena and her young children on his way to evening prayer, he did not seemed slowed at all.
An unkind observer might note that a post melee stupor would merely level the social playing field for Roland relative to many other knights. That much is true, but nonetheless while the man Laena greets wears Roland's face, it is a very different man from the knight she met earlier in the tourney.
A bow and a reach for his wounded neck to check the bandage, but beyond that no betrayal of pain.
"My Lady Laena."
Roland reciprocates lady Laena's friendly greeting, but his smile truly broadens at the mention of his upcoming wedding. Love matches are rare indeed in Westeros, despite all the complexities this one carries.
"It appears Lord Tyrell can no more control his gossiping servants than he can maintain order."
"Despite the talk, matters are as yet unconfirmed. Lord Tyrell thought approval from Prince Baelor and his regal father likely, so we need must only wait for a letter to reach Lord Yronwood and receive his approval."
A denial was not out of the question - Roland had slain Isabelle Yronwood's husband during the war after all. That said, in releasing her and the accompanying noblewoman rather than keeping them prisoner he had won his spur from Redtusk and the enmity of Lord Oakheart. A strange route to marriage, perhaps to happiness. But it was his route, that he and Alicent had won for themselves rather than having it given to them.
"All being good, I may as yet be the only man with happy memories of Highgarden. We are to be wed here."
Talk of Highgarden's horrors prompted a more serious thought.
"I trust Lord Starkwood is recovering? The maesters seemed confident he would recover - he is stronger in mind and body than men half his age."

"It appears Lord Tyrell can no more control his gossiping servants than he can maintain order." Laena laughs. "I'm not sure the Seven themselves can stop servants gossiping." "Despite the talk, matters are as yet unconfirmed. Lord Tyrell thought approval from Prince Baelor and his regal father likely, so we need must only wait for a letter to reach Lord Yronwood and receive his approval." "I will add a prayer that the answer you receive be positive, then." "All being good, I may as yet be the only man with happy memories of Highgarden. We are to be wed here." She raises an eyebrow. "It will be a grand spectacle, I am sure." She clearly hesitates before continuing. "If it is not too presumptuous, some advice from a woman who's been where you're hopefully going: it's easy to see 'love' as static, eternal. It's not. It's a living, breathing thing, that needs care and attention both to grow, but also simply to survive. Love is not just a 'feeling', but a 'doing' as well. And one careless action can do more harm than a hundred thoughtful ones can undo." "I trust Lord Starkwood is recovering? The maesters seemed confident he would recover - he is stronger in mind and body than men half his age." Despite the severity of the topic, Laena laughs again. "That man could teach the trees in our Godswood about being tough and stubborn. I'm sure Maester Ronnel is giving him the best of care in private, but in public, even within the house, he's back to being his usual firm, severe self. Next time I speak, I'll pass on your well-wishes to him." A thought occurs to her. "On the subject, I understand you went to considerable effort to see to both father and son's safety." She gives him a deep, formal curtsey. "House Starkwood recognises and appreciates your efforts." She takes a breath, confirming in her head that this is what she believes Lord Ulbert would want. "Should you be in need in the future, so long as it does not conflict with our house's other oaths and obligations, you can count on our support." Almost certainly overstepping her bounds with that pledge, but it needed to be known that the Starkwoods would reward those who helped them, rather than being ungrateful beneficiaries.

Laena and Roland were of near an age, but the the former already knew more of sorrow and family. Hard won knowledge, where Roland had enjoyed the freedoms of a second son, swiftly rendered a spare twice over when his brother's son was born.
"Not too presumptuous at all. Lord Tyrell has charged me to ensure I do not disgrace myself or my bridge to be ahead of our wedding, but I shall strive to be ever worthy of Alicent. House Yronwood is said to be among the mightiest in Dorne, second only to the Martells. Alicent's humour may be needed to soften my severity."
He smiled, rubbing a hand over his stubbly hair, shorn in penance.
[TN: Awareness 8 - Roland has some concerns. 2 DoS or more: Rather than being concerned about being too severe for Alicent he's a bit worried about keeping his in the appropriate surroundings. He's only a sworn sword and she is from a very powerful house and then stayed at Highgarden.]
"Lord Starkwood's swift recovery is most welcome, I would expect no less."
He nodded in acknowledgement of Laena's curtsy and offer of future support.
"Ashara warned me that an attempt on Ser Symon's life was possible, likely even. I was quite willing to believe it then and sadly find myself more willing to believe it now. His blood was up, and while he fought well he fought too hard. By slaying his father's would-be assassin so deliberately he opened himself up to reprisals, then and now. I have fought in enough melees - I would sooner lose a man from a melee team temporarily than have my future sister by marriage bereaved. Would that I could be in two places at once, but Lord Starkwood's able support as a lieutenant meant I could not protect both men."
He had been keen to make the melee fair and sporting, as he had told Lord Arryn. He felt little concern at sending the Starkwood heir to safety, as useful as his sword would have been.
"That said, I will confess to a dark thought when I awoke in the maester's tent, briefly wishing Ser Symon had worn my conqueror's blow rather than my own helm. Would that the Spongeholder's son inherited his father's prowess."
Roland smiled, attempting to lighten the mood.
"Mayhap I should call on Ser Symon after prayer - he is young, and I half wondered whether Ser Lambert was his first."
Roland attempted to be vague given female company, but was not quite fine enough a courtier to couch thing in metaphor. He had found the young man frustrating, with his coarse recruitment efforts and insubordination in the melee, but to slay your first man in such circumstances was tragic. Worse still, Roland judged the act deliberate. Swords did not find their way through visors accidentally and Roland could not entirely keep his frustration from his tone.

Laena face softens in sympathy, but is distracted by Sylvina becoming restless. She claps her hands sharply twice for attention. "Alright. Roslyn, stay with me. The rest of you, carry on to the Sept, begin your prayers. I will catch up when I can." She leans down to kiss each of her children on the forehead. "Be good!" she admonishes, before waving them off. That done, she turns back to Ser Roland with a slightly apologetic smile. "I was born in King's Landing, where I remained until my father's death. After that, I was one of the uncountable ladies in waiting here in Highgarden, until I married Ser Vernan. So, while I've never met your bride-to-be in person, I can relate to at least a degree. My suggestion would simply be to make sure you listen to her. She's had a lot of time to think on what she wants while waiting out her old betrothal, and she believes you can meet it. Not without reason - finalist in the joust, leader of a team in the melee who did very well, considering the political bias arrayed against them. Defeater of Ser Rennifer. And I'm sure that's barely half your accomplishments just this tourney. A war is undoubtedly coming, and that means rewards for those who survive on the winning side. Carry on as you have, and I suspect land, in one form or another, will be coming your way. Perhaps your lady thinks with your capabilities combined, a new house to replace a lost one is not out of the question." She shrugs. "That's speculation, though. The important thing is to listen to her. And not to die - I wouldn't wish a widow's life on anyone. But so long as you treat her like her mind is more important than her womb - without downplaying the importance of the latter - I'm sure you'll be fine." "Ashara warned me that an attempt on Ser Symon's life was possible, likely even. Would that I could be in two places at once, but Lord Starkwood's able support as a lieutenant meant I could not protect both men." Laena sighs and nods. "You are undoubtedly correct, though he would always be at risk due to the colour of his skin. While callous, perhaps there is a small compensation in that by slaying a man so feared and capable as the Scorpionbane, he at least will make others reluctant to engage him head on." She sighs again. "Not that that is much protection, as this tourney has well-proven, though hopefully those cold enough to commit such acts are focused on more politically-relevant targets." "That said, I will confess to a dark thought when I awoke in the maester's tent, briefly wishing Ser Symon had worn my conqueror's blow rather than my own helm. Would that the Spongeholder's son inherited his father's prowess." She raises an eyebrow. "It was Ser Thaddeus who felled you?!" She sounds rather shocked, before her brain reminds her there is a second son, who she'd been less focused on due him already being wed. "Oh, no. Ser Imry, I presume? That makes more sense. I'm sorry, Ser Mikel and I were already on our way to where we believed Lord Ulbert would be taken off the field at the time, so I didn't see it. "Anyway, while I've never taken such a blow, and hopefully never will, it a very human reaction to wish pain transferred to another. I doubt neither gods nor men will judge you harshly for it. All three of you live, at least for now, and that is reason enough to be happy with the outcome." "Mayhap I should call on Ser Symon after prayer - he is young, and I half wondered whether Ser Lambert was his first." "I must confess to being ignorant as to what feelings taking a life has on a man, so I leave that matter to your discretion." She detects his frustration towards her cousin, and continues. "If you decide to see him, I would just ensure you have in mind that, should it be affecting him, he may act ... atypically. This entire tourney has been hard for him. He's worked hard to be accepted by his peers, yet recent events have made clear how the vast majority will never see past his skin. It has been ... wearing on him, even before the melee. To be denied what you most seek, not through your choices, but through your very birth. Worse, to be called an enemy of the realm you're willing to risk your life to defend, by so many fellow knights. The killing may be a tipping point beyond that. I do not wish to discourage you - like I said, I leave it entirely to you if it's needed or appropriate - but if you do go, I ask that you keep that in mind, and be ... as understanding as you can."

Roland smiled as the children departed. It was a good thing to see noble children suitably instructed in the Faith.
The mention of being felled by Ser Thaddeus prompted genuine laughter. It was clear he thought little of knights who lacked martial ability, beyond honouring them for the effort of at least earning spurs.
"Ser Imry struck the blow as you say my Lady, else you would find me on the Wall in shame, for I have already cut my hair for an earlier penance. The best you can say for Ser Thaddeus is he tries, which is a virtue in itself."
"With Ser Mikel beside you I expect you to be free from such danger until you find a husband worthy of your lineage. A woman needs a stout man beside her, and a man a gentle woman to guide him."
Roland was as firm an Andal traditionalist as they come.
"Your guidance on Ser Symon is welcome."
He sighed, pausing a moment. He looked down at his arming sword, suddenly struck by an honourable path to take with Ser Symon. It would cost Roland dear, but the honourable path was seldom free of sacrifice and consequence. Doesn't mean I have to like the cocksure, disobedient tyro. "Some of my anger may be guilt at any reflected shame, I was his captain afterall. I was on my way to pray for forgivness after fracturing Lord Willum's arm, so shall add this to my confessions. He would have fought free of that mob had I not broken his arm. I believe we did the right thing in sparing him Lady Orme's retribution, even if it bought him just a few more precious days of life. Better to die a hero in a worthy cause than perish in an unworthy duel. My thanks for this final gift to my friend."
For some men, this would be a convenient lie, but Roland was an open book to Laena and he spoke with conviction.
Roland returned to Laena's advice on marriage, glowing with happiness as he returned to his favourite subject. Flushed with new love, there was a danger that the knight would never make to to prayer and instead prattle on about her until night drew in. Those in love have a habit of drawing a conversation back to the object of their affection.
"I will listen to Lady Alicent - I half thought your paths might have crossed before you were wed, as she has long been a ward at Highgarden. I suspect she arrived not long after you departed. She is not just the very image of beauty but capable as you say. If Lord Tyrell listens to her, as all observed at that farce of a duel, not to mention that scandal of a trial, then I would be a great fool to ignore her. Her wisdom and the Seven's justice prevailed, even if Lord Tyrell should never have let it get so far."
He half surprised himself at the vehemence of his feelings. Do I believe such things and with such strength for my own part, or to be closer to her that I love?
When Andal traditionalism conflicted with advice he did not want to hear, would Roland be so accepting of a woman's word?

"Ser Imry struck the blow as you say my Lady, else you would find me on the Wall in shame, for I have already cut my hair for an earlier penance. The best you can say for Ser Thaddeus is he tries, which is a virtue in itself." Laena frowns in thought. "Indeed. Perhaps I was mistaken, but did I not see Lord Alliser Levalle himself on your team? A man of little skill and many enemies, willingly putting himself in danger. I would not describe him as a man of many virtues, but it appears courage is among them." "With Ser Mikel beside you I expect you to be free from such danger until you find a husband worthy of your lineage. A woman needs a stout man beside her, and a man a gentle woman to guide him." There's a flicker of a smile when he refers to a 'gentle woman', gone almost before it's there, but she makes no refutation of his statement, merely nodding acknowledgement. "Ser Mikel is indeed a diligent and skilled knight. It is a pity he was too injured to participate. I know he will blame himself for not being next to our lord when he was injured so, as well." "Some of my anger may be guilt at any reflected shame, I was his captain after all. I was on my way to pray for forgiveness after fracturing Lord Willum's arm, so shall add this to my confessions. He would have fought free of that mob had I not broken his arm. I believe we did the right thing in sparing him Lady Orme's retribution, even if it bought him just a few more precious days of life. Better to die a hero in a worthy cause than perish in an unworthy duel. My thanks for this final gift to my friend." "My pardon, but are you sure *that* is what you should seek forgiveness for? Hubris is a sin, too. You were a captain of ... 48 people, I believe? You are but a man. Only the Seven themselves could closely watch all those men in the midst of combat. And I would argue the same regarding Lord Karl. I assume you didn't break his arm deliberately? Something I have noticed is that while the Seven have gifted us free will, They do try and guide those who pay attention to Their will. While I cannot prove it - it is a matter of faith - I believe that, broken arm or no, if Lord Karl joined the fight against the mob, he would die. The Seven used you as an instrument of Their will to give him an honourable way to avoid that death, but did not deny him the free will to choose it. After all, with a broken arm, he had to have understood that fate was a distinct possibility. And yet, he *chose* that path, and hence, his death. Had you not broken his arm, he might have genuinely believed he could survive, but you had, so we, and everyone else, know precisely what kind of man he was. "A hero.
"As you say, more than just the few days of life, that's a far better way to meet the Father than as simply a man who broke a betrothal with a young lady. Redemption is neither easy, nor cheap, and he chose it willingly. Do not regret your role in his injury, give thanks for your role in his redemption in the eyes of the Father." "I will listen to Lady Alicent - I half thought your paths might have crossed before you were wed, as she has long been a ward at Highgarden. I suspect she arrived not long after you departed." Laena shrugs. "We may well have seen each other at Highgarden, I'm not sure, but we had not properly *met*. Understand, a young natural-born maiden must defend her reputation even more vigorously than most, given what is known of us. Only keeping appropriate companionship is a must. As such, associating with anyone from Dorne was ... undesirable, however pleasant the company may have been. I imagine the same went for any proper Dornish lady and us natural-borns." "She is not just the very image of beauty but capable as you say. If Lord Tyrell listens to her, as all observed at that farce of a duel, not to mention that scandal of a trial, then I would be a great fool to ignore her. Her wisdom and the Seven's justice prevailed, even if Lord Tyrell should never have let it get so far." "I agree that it is easy to criticise Lord Leo, but I would temper that with consideration of his position. More than one other Reacher house seeks to supplant House Tyrell's position as the Lord Paramount. With these political cases - and what isn't, these days - if he leans one way, he risks being supplanted from below; if he leans the other, he risks being replaced from above - if not immediately, then after the upcoming war. For all his power, he is in a very precarious position, and I do not envy him one bit."

"Lord Levalle earned his spurs as a young man. I have been frank with him on my views on his actions as a younger man, but I would not stand in the way of a lord displaying his bravery to his men. Despite it all, there are some depths to him - not every lord was bold enough to enter the melee. Discretion may have been wise, but men will fight harder for a man willing to risk his own safety. He wronged your mother and many others, the man is rightly reviled. Yet the spongeholder is a surprise to me - I am unsure if his efforts to aid me are an effort to redeem himself or if he seeks to fix strings to me. I would make a poor puppet for a man who was once so close to the throne."
Roland nodded at Laena's words on Lord Willum as she turned Roland's role in his death from a cruel twist of fate in to his friend's divine reward, freely chosen.
"Well said, well said. His many friends are gathering tonight to tell stories to remember him by, I look forward to seeing you there if your maid can see your charming children to sleep."
"True words on Lord Tyrell - even in war I have more often been champion than captain, responsible for my own safety rather than compromising and considering others."
"On the subject of political maneuvers, I hear tell that Lady Alerie Hightower may have a betrothal announced soon. House Hightower is strong, and many will be looking there for both swords and its closeness to the faith, may the late Lord Jon Hightower rest safely with the Seven."

I agree with your other points, though, and caution around men such as he is always wise." She decides to not comment on his quality as a puppet - she'd always found him high quality enough for her purposes. "Well said, well said. His many friends are gathering tonight to tell stories to remember him by, I look forward to seeing you there if your maid can see your charming children to sleep." "I certainly intend to attend. Myself and many others have many stresses and worries we'd be happy to lose for an evening." Never having met the man was no reason to not attend in her eyes - she'd helped temporarily save his life, after all. That was likely more than many of his so-called 'friends' had done. "On the subject of political maneuvers, I hear tell that Lady Alerie Hightower may have a betrothal announced soon. House Hightower is strong, and many will be looking there for both swords and its closeness to the faith, may the late Lord Jon Hightower rest safely with the Seven." Using all her control, she manages to avoid a strong reaction to him dropping such important information into her lap so casually. "Oh? Who is the lucky gentleman, do you know?" In the tone of one interested as a matter of idle gossip.

"You may want to bring a knight you trust tonight - we intend to see Karl off in the style he would have wanted. Things should not get out of hand, but the guests will have a lot of stress to work off.
"Lady Janna is too subtle even at her tender age to let such information slip, but she intimated Lady Alerie's betrothal would be to one of high station indeed. I cannot even blame milk of the poppy - I suspect she would dance rings around me even without it."
"The Hightowers are a noble family, and are due some joy after the the sadness the fates have dealt them. That said, I now suspect a marriage to one of great rank may invite further sadness. I endeavoured to learn more of the matter at the feast, but here my friends in House Hightower counted against me - all anyone wanted to talk about was my performance in the joust or melee every time I attempted to shift the topic of conversation. You may have better luck than I even at this late hour. It would grieve me to see my friends in House Hightower used by false friends seeking to turn that house's good name and sharp swords in to ambition's tools."
Roland shakes his head in frustration, where once he would have merely regarded this as a matter for a rueful shrug. Too put out or too clouded by milk of the poppy to even finish a simple metaphor.

I fear that is all we can do."

"My influence extends little beyond my immediate Reach, however friendly I am with many in House Hightower I have no lands or sons of my own to offer an alternative match. But I have resolved that prayer alone is no longer enough - the Seven will damn me for inaction where I fail to speak out against foolishness. My friends are owed franks advice where that is the best I can muster, and I am resolved to action where such is open to me."
"Thoughts and prayers are no longer enough."
"Piety is necessary, but no longer sufficient."
Gesturing to Roslyn, Roland smiled and made suggested the three of them finish the short journey to the Sept.
"Shall we then see to necessities?"
Given Laena's scandalous embrace with Balon, Roland took every effort not to shame her further by offering an arm, merely providing an escort to the two women.
A solution to the matter with Ser Symon beckoned, and he was reassured that he and a woman of character were of one mind when it came to the dear departed Karl.

Laena accepts the invitation and they continue towards the sept, a small smile creeping onto her face. It was a small thing, but Roland's rejection of inaction was the first time he said something she could genuinely respect.
Even a small stone, in the right conditions, could send ripples across a whole lake. Or, with the wrong ones, it could be swallowed up with barely a trace. She's interested to see how this develops.
