She cocks her head. "MMmaybe. Though if he did have anything to do with Lord Hightower's cups that night, if he has a lick of sense, he'll deny it. Lord Hightower had plenty of pages of his own - there is only one plausible reason why a page related to an ambitious vassal would attend to the man's drink. Most likely he was targeted because pages go everywhere and hear everything, while being weak and poorly defended.
"There is another possibility, though I admit it's risky. Start a rumour that a hooded man knows the identity of the Falcon, with the implication that he's waiting for the reward to grow even higher. That man will certainly hear the rumour before his lord, who, if he is who we believe, is distrustful and wrathful. Such a rumour will likely spell his death, unless he either flees, or seeks a more powerful patron, and offers what he knows for protection. Hidden in the depths of Highgarden, he will be all but impossible to find. But a man seeking a fast horse would be much easier." She shrugs. "I admit, many things could go wrong with such a plan, but I agree he's the key, and finding him on his own turf will be all but impossible."

Alliser nods, "that idea does have merit. I can not think of many ways to dislodge him from whatever rock he may have clambered under." He adds an impish look, "and if a bearded and hooded man were to be seen entering my camp, and have me start asking around for funds, it might add legitimacy to our claim. It's been said that the falcon would be worth her weight in gold. I'm likely to be one of the few Lord's who is well known to have the wealth and questionable enough honor to make such a deal. If we combine that with the rumor that Malyk may know the identity of the the falcon." He shrugs, "either we end up with the hooded man, or bittersteel would take overt action against me. Either way we would have our confirmation."

Laena slowly nods as he speaks, clearly liking the plan that is forming, though she freezes when he mentions the rumour about Malyk, then frowns in confusion. "I'm sorry, is the plan to imply that both you and Malyk know, because the hooded man has told you, and to hope that Bittersteel goes for the easier target?" Her eyes flicker as she considers it. "You're plotting an ambush, presumably, but the ambushers of Malyk won't know any more than the kidnappers of Ser Aladore, so how does that actually help you?"

"The ambushers, should any materialize, will need to be hired. My hope is that if he does not flee, he will at least need to discover what I know so that he could clear his name before bittersteel. While he might try to attack me, it would be much easier for him to bring my seneschal in. It is will known that Malyk is my confidant, so it would not be outside of reason for him to know what I know about the falcon." Alliser opens his hand, "then when he goes about searching for men in need of coin, Regyn will hear and be able to intercept the hooded man. Or whomever else bittersteel or someone close to him use in hiring the men for the deed." Alliser shrugs, "it might be useful to have your friends listening for a man seeking a fast horse while I have Regyn searching forward the other end. Hopefully one if us will turn up something of use."

Laena purses her lips, and gently taps her fingers against the table in thought for a few moments. "That could work. Bittersteel is not to be underestimated, however. Make sure you leave word for your lord in some way as to what it means should you be suddenly killed or disappear.
"So, I believe we are agreed? I will look into the Lord Karl situation, and have an eye kept on the stables from the 'morrow. You will spread the rumour, use yourself and your seneschal as bait, and have an eye kept on recruitment attempts for a strike. Whether he runs or fights, one of us should find him, hopefully capture him alive, and bring the whole rotten edifice down. Either way, I am happy for you to take the majority of the public praise, as is right, since the greater risk is yours, so long as you whisper my contribution in a few of the right ears, like that of your liege. It is not considered appropriate for a lady, particularly one seeking marriage, to openly involve herself in so sordid a matter.
"There's certainly no reason for you to *not* talk with Master Jorah about why he believes he was targeted as well, but I doubt it will turn up anything useful."

Alliser nods, "so we are in agreement then. I will likely have Malyk speak to him, as he has a way with children that, frankly, I do not."
He paused, "perhaps if the false hooded man came from someone you know it might make it easier. If I am right that my camp is being watched, it might lead to the story not being strike upon by the fish we seek."

Laena considers for a few moments before responding. "I'll see if Ser Mikel is willing. Thanks to his background, he can pass for a commoner without requiring much in the way of deception, fortunately. Tomorrow morning?"

"tonight, if your able, I feel that the more time we spend setting the trap the more likely he is to slip through it."

She taps her fingers gently on the table for a few moments before nodding. "Should be doable." She moves to stand. "Unless there's anything else, I'd best be going."
