Ser Parmen had been busy preparing for his own contest and had not seen the tilt where Lord Blackbar had defeated Ser Thaddeus. To avoid a similar fate he sought out his brother-in-law, and others who had observed the contest, to gain their impressions of his opponent's skills and likely tactics. Lord Vardis is a learned man, useful for one that rules a house, perhaps, but reading books did not make you a good jouster, and he was only an adequate one.

Lord Blackbar was so intent on emerging through the first tilt against the skilled Ser Parmen that he aim was off, spectacularly missing his opponent. Still, at least he retained his saddle and gave himself a chance. However, he was severely winded by Ser Parmen's thumping blow and would struggle to absorb a second hit of such force. Lord Blackbar struck a better blow on the second pass, but in doing could not keep his own saddle and tumbled from his mount. While Ser Parmen had ridden a noble pass in the second tilt, the thumping blow in the first round and the impact from the ground presented a small but not insignificant risk to Lord Blackbar's health... In the second pass Ser Parmen took Lord Blackbar's second strike on his shield and stayed braced while his own strike knocked his opponent from his saddle. Although not placed to cause damage the fall
Lord Blackbar lay unmoving on the ground for several moments before suddenly shaking himself and rising to a sitting position. He stayed there for several more moments while the maester on hand checked him for damage and his squire helped him to remove his helm.
He was just be helped (with effort) to his feet when Parmen rode back over to check on his opponent. "Well ridden, My Lord," he's said, offering his hand. Lord Blackbar took it and offered his own praise, albeit with a bit of difficulty.
As Ser Parmen rode off the field, hand raised to accept the cheers from the crowd he caught sight of his wife, and gave her a short bow from the saddle. She was sitting next to her older brother who seemed to be the only one in the crowd happier than Alys with the victory. Ser Thaddeus was enjoying the thought of seeing his ransom, lost after the first round, brought back to House Levalle.
