... The Father has, in his wisdom, entrusted Lord Tyrell with these difficult matters so they need not burden US. Who here in their pride would gainsay that wisdom!"
[/div][/quote] well he's not wrong. But this might have been the wrong time to speak out. Lord Alistair was wearing his sword, as it was proper a Knight to do. He placed his hand on the hilt and made his way towards Malyk. Lord Alliser had seen the young man fight before and was not concerned about his ability, hell, he probably fights better then I do, ever since I got my injury , but it was one thing fighting one man in a ring, quite another facing a mob of frenzied small folks. but hopefully if it comes to it the sight of cold steel will quell their fire. No one wants to be the first one to die Lord Alliser told himself. I do wish I had my plate on. Hunting clothes are not fantastic for turning away blades, they barely are good for stopping horns

Cleyton watching the slow funeral march and shakes his head in disbelief of the atrocity of such murder when the septon begin his fiery rhetoric that could easily get out of control causing harm to innocent people or used as a weapon by those among the crowd against their enemies. While continuing to watch the procession the words he feared to hear the most came to be as he sneers at Ser Balon from a distance while and began to move towards lady Ashara for fear of her becoming a target Ser Balon's cheap method to give the mob a target can be quite effective, but so will a sword on his neck when the time comes. I will remember. Dornish Blade and Dornish Poison you shall have!
After hearing another man trying to reason with the crowd he can only nod, but this situation has become so dangerous and tense the slightest whisper could turn this into a bloodbath "Lady Ashara be ready to move, things might turn for the worse if this continues"
+1 Disposition to Malyk -3 Disposition to Ser Balon Blackbriar

Addam snaked his way through the crowd. The Septon had filled the people with rage, now all they needed was a target. "Lady Alicent failed to bring Lord Eldon to bed, now her Dornish overlords seek to punish her for her failures and to replace her with someone more capable. First Lord Jon, now an innocent member of the faith. Tell me, who is next? Will it be your Lord? Will it be your daughter?"

The septon allows other voices to exhaust themselves. His face remains a mask of rigid conviction, his eyes gauging the crowd and speakers alike. "Wait!" she cried out and moved towards the Septon with teary eyes and waving her hand. Though her eyes were on him, her words were equally for the crowd. "Everyone! There WILL be justice! And when the guilty are found, they WILL be punished. But we are here, now, for the Septa's sake. Let us not turn her procession into a mob. She deserves better. We all do." Lysette Starling . . . a soft maiden, pampered. Matters of sin and punishment are beyond her ken.As people began to be whipped up Balon smiled and shouted, " First Dornish poison, now Dornish blades!" I am such an asshole. Balon thought as he watched the scene unfold. Balon, you idiot! The assassins targeted a Dornishwoman."You should all be ashamed. All of you!" He roared for all to hear. "All of you, baying for more blood when this poor girl's is barely cold!"His words dripped with acid.
"Do you need reminding that the Right of Gallows in this place is Lord Tyrell's and his alone! Do you not trust Lord Tyrell to dispense sound judgement in this matter! Do you not have faith in your Lord to bring justice to this poor girl! Who are you," His gaze swiveled to the fiery Septon calling for blood. "ANY OF YOU, to presume so much. The Father has, in his wisdom, entrusted Lord Tyrell with these difficult matters so they need not burden US. Who here in their pride would gainsay that wisdom!" Unwise, seneschal."Lady Alicent failed to bring Lord Eldon to bed, now her Dornish overlords seek to punish her for her failures and to replace her with someone more capable. First Lord Jon, now an innocent member of the faith. Tell me, who is next? Will it be your Lord? Will it be your daughter?" Lady Starling begs decorum, but her sworn sword cannot resist squeezing profit from this tragedy . . . The septon strides once more to the center of the street. Turning to Ser Donnel, he meets his gaze. "Thank you, ser." It wouldn't do if Lysette's words whipped an errant suitor into a frenzy against the septa's entourage. Walking away from the wagon and the honor guard, he begins speaking again in the same booming voice, ignoring Lysette's attempt to quiet the exchange. "My Lady Starling is charming in her innocence!" He continues walking so that the crowd must needs turn its back to the sept and the honor guard, hopefully easing the tension. "Her virtues have made her the toast of many a suitor. But, o lady, the world is crueler than the smiling tales offered by your knights-gallant! Outside your white tower, the valiant can fall to the villain! The mighty can flatten the meek! And the septa can be murdered by the sinner!""Courtesy has its place; in your tower, in your books, in your hall. But justice demands retribution, not courtesy and graciousness!""You said the guilty would be punished when found! We need not wait, the two killers are caught already!" He points at Highgarden's keep. Spinning back toward Lysette, he gestures to her with an upturned palm. "It is for the maiden to swoon!"He pulls both hands to his chest, making fists. "It is for the septon to preach!"
He turns his head toward Malyk. "It is for the madman to rave!" He points up at Highgarden again. "It is for Lord Tyrell to deliver justice!"He raises his arms. "And it is for the people to see their holy sister avenged!"
OOC: Withholding rolls pending mechanical clarity.

"Well, if we are completely dispensing with the Mother's mercy; if you seek revenge rather than justice, then do as the Septon suggests. There are many here practically drooling at the prospect anyway.
If vengeance is your desire, you are in for a treat! A spectacle that will surely satisfy even the most vindictive. Have you witnessed a man burn? I have.
You need not worry, the screaming does not last long, although it lasts much longer than you might expect, so the ladies in the audience might want to cover their ears for the first minute or so. After that the shrieks of the man cannot be heard over the roar of the flame.
The hair and clothes burn first, but the smell is not so bad compared to what comes later. The man is usually dead once the skin crisps and blackens. It's about that time the eyes boil and burst. You probably won't get to see that, though. The fat of the body sizzles and renders creating enormous amounts of smoke. It is not like any smoke you know; thick, black and oily, it seems to seep into everything around it. Seeps into your very pours... and the smell is unbelievably noxious. I suggest you don't wear anything you ever wish to wear again.
Finally nothing is left but ash and a rictus caricature of blackened bone only vaguely reminiscent of the person they used to be.
Yes, it should be quite the performance. A once in a lifetime opportunity. Enough to satisfy any audience, no matter how vindictive, pious or mad they be.
So burn them, if that quells your lust. May the Mother have more mercy on you than you show this day."
Madman he may be, but it was not him calling for this gruesome and macabre theater.

The majority of the crowd seems to catch on to the chant of "Blood, then Fire!", but the majority of the knights stays silent, their arms crossed. Disbelief on some faces, distaste on several, most nods in agreement with Lady Lysette. Though few finds the courage to speak up, one who does not hesitate to speak what is on the mind of those having received the education that sons of lords often does, is Ser Aemon Flowers. "I must say, septon, though while saying that Lord Tyrell indeed is the one to administer justice, you seem awfully eager to take the right of judgement mandated to him by the hands of the father into your own."

Abelar nods along with Malyk's description of burning, clearly willing to accept Malyk's assertion that the execution will be a public spectacle. "Indeed, if Lord Tyrell consigns these killers to the flames, it will be a great ceremony that will please the MASSES below as well as the GODS above!" Do they deliver justice at House Levalle, or only washed maidens to the royal bed?The majority of the crowd seems to catch on to the chant of "Blood, then Fire!", but the majority of the knights stays silent, their arms crossed. Disbelief on some faces, distaste on several, most nods in agreement with Lady Lysette. Though few finds the courage to speak up, one who does not hesitate to speak what is on the mind of those having received the education that sons of lords often does, is Ser Aemon Flowers. "I must say, septon, though while saying that Lord Tyrell indeed is the one to administer justice, you seem awfully eager to take the right of judgement mandated to him by the hands of the father into your own." "Good ser, our grief burns hot--with retribution and with anticipation. It cries out for justice. But let me be clear--it is not for me to put torch to pyre, unless Lord Tyrelle commands me to do so. As you say, that power flows from the Gods downward to the crown and Lord Tyrelle." The septon does not dwell on this point, but his correction of Ser Aemon will not go unnoticed by the learned men and women in the crowd. Lord Tyrelle delivers the king's justice, a power that relies entirely on the crown. I could make much more of this, but that would turn the matter of justice into a piece in this mummer's game . . . "Goodmen and women of Highgarden, you know the good septas who tend to you in your times of need! They bless your sons and daughters! They bind up your wounds! They teach you to recite the written words of the Seven-Pointed Star, a holy book!" Most in the crowd do not have their letters, and hold written words in a place of special reverence. "The KILLERS who took Septa Tyane from us will not pass the PORTAL TO HELL WITHOUT HEARING FROM YOU!" He waits for their reaction to subside before continuing. Turning to address Ser Aemon again, Abelar continues in his booming baritone. "What you hear out there today is a howl of anguish from his lordship's people! A cry for justice! AND I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT LORD TYRELL WILL DELIVER TO THESE KILLERS A GRUESOME END!"
OOC: I'm assuming here that I'm correct that the right of pit and gallows flows from the crown to the lord--I recall from the books that lords always said they were delivering "the king's justice" when they execute someone. As a secondary point, I think that executions are almost always spectacles in ASOIAF anyway, and are often gruesome. Dunk and Egg mentions people being hung in crow's cages for everyone to jeer at all day until the condemned dies of thirst. Pretty brutal stuff. Anyway, I feel like burning at the stake is not a massively huge step up in terms of gruesomeness, and is probably more lively for the crowd. Still waiting direction on rolls. Feel free to roll for me if it speeds things up.

Malyk watched the exchange between the Septon and the Knight, taking a position nearer to the young woman, should violence break out.
Septons were supposed to raise people up to be their better selves, not cater to their basest and most primitive instincts. The man seemed to relish putting people to the torch and would probably have something close to orgasm if Lord Tyrell gave him the honor of lighting the pyre.
People called Malyk a madman.
Perhaps I truly am mad if no-one else can see what this man is.

"And yet you seem to presume Lord Tyrell's judgement, septon." Ser Aemon emphazises the titles when addressing Abelar. "And you insult a lady of unquestionable virtue when so doing."
I have no idea what rolls you should make without knowing what you want to try to achieve, you already did the rabble-rousing.

"And yet you seem to presume Lord Tyrell's judgement, septon." Ser Aemon emphazises the titles when addressing Abelar. "And you insult a lady of unquestionable virtue when so doing." This bastard is great alright . . . a great pain in my arse. But he's Lord Tyrell's retainer.Still speaking loud enough to be heard, the septon addresses Ser Aemon's remarks. "I hear that the killers have confessed, ser. Judgment will be swift. The crowd's thirst for punishment does not dishonor the lord any more than the roar of the commons presumes to tell the knight where to place his lance. I have no doubt that Lord Tyrell will connect." The septon slams one fist into his palm. In a lower voice, he continues. "And I recall praising the lady's virtue, not insulting her."
In my original post, the goal was to incite the crowd to favor burning over other forms of punishment. That goal has not changed. Everything after that is aimed at deflecting the arguments that others have made regarding the type of punishment to be meted out or the septon's motives, as well as rebutting Balon and Addam's attempts to politicize the murder. I'm not really trying to persuade Lysette, Malyk, or Aemon, although I am trying to make Aemon shut up, if possible. However, the ultimate goal is to implant the desire for burning in public opinion among the smallfolk. The audience throughout my posts is the crowd. So basically, Abelar's goal is to make the smallfolk really want to see the murderers burn, which will hopefully create pressure on Lord Tyrell to deliver the same. After all, if there is a civil war on the horizon, he needs to keep his popularity among the smallfolk up more so than usual.

"Despite his 'respect' for Lord Tyrell, I notice he did not bring his 'concerns' about these men's punishment to him; deciding instead to stand on the Septry steps over the body of a poor girl, hawking death like a fishmonger's wife." He said acidly. "I have to wonder what will happen if Lord Tyrell decides not to accede to his raging demands. Can we expect another fiery 'sermon' in a few days denouncing his decision?" He turned to the Septon. "If you truly believe this is the proper course, why do you not go forthwith and lay your case before the Lord? Or do you think you can only win your case by inciting bloodlust in the streets?"

"Please," Lysette urges both men. "The Septa deserves better than her funeral to be a battlefield. There are other times, other places to talk about crimes and punishments. Let us remember the good Septa in peace, as most of her life was spent. I am sure Lord Tyrell will devise brave punishments for those who are found guilty."

As the arguing starts, and the risk of action decreases, Ser Donnel and his fellow knights starts calming. Although still fixed directly between the hightower honor guard and the rebellious smallfolk, it becomes apparent that the situation will not escalate immediately.

Lord Alliser relaxes a modicum as more smallfolk seem to be more interested in words then taking action. He does still stand behind Malyk as his strange senechal continues the arguments with the priest, I recognize that Septon, he was the one who talked about having my Elle be sent off to become a Septa. Shaking his head in remembrance of his conversation he listens intently as Ser Aemon and Septon Ablear parry words and Lysette calls for peace. The crowd is still milling about, but the focus on the Septa was forgotten in the whirling debate about how to properly handle the death's of the two surviving assassins. It is a shame that their lives will be cut short. Probably have been better to give those men to the knights watch. Men who have a chance at life are more likely to tell their secrets. Otherwise they are more likely to lie, because once they are dead, what they say in life will not matter. Not to mention that Lies will not make them go any further in the seven hells, they are already guilty of murder in their hearts, and that is much worse then any lie that they tell us.
But the well dressed man still does not speak up, preferring instead to lend support to the man with multicolored eyes instead.
I do not remember the Septon from the tear being this blood thirsty. Regyn was sitting on a small bench in front of a meatpie stall next to the Sept as the procession made its way through the streets. He noticed Lord Alliser and Malyk among the crowd, as well as the firey septon. He had been tuning out the words, not wanting to let his meat pie get cold, when the talk of immolation of the bandits reached a fever pitch. Regyn watched the crowd and noted how the Smallfolk were swayed by the Septons words and idea of divine punishment. Interesting. I did not realize that the red god and the Septon's shared the love of purifying the unworthy with flame. I wonder if there are more similarities between the red god and the Seven. Soon Regyn noticed how Balon was seeking to politicize the death of the Septa. Regyn also felt more then a few smallfolk begin to stare down the apparent Maester, seeking his apparent response towards the Septon. Well looks like this is my que to leave. The brown robed man got up, turned from the crowd, and left the scene, seeking to put distance between himself and the questions he felt rumbling just below the surface.

Day 3, Persuasion/Incite+Chivalry+Status, Pro-Fire Rumor, TN 9: 3d6+6 22*, 3 DoS
*That should be a 21, which is still 3 DoS. Wrong modifier for chivalry. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As Septon Abelar, Lady Lysette, and the others exchanged heated words Balon was moving through the crowd quitely spreading his anti-dornish sentiment. "This is what happens when we bring the Dornish into the Seven Kingdoms as equals." he whispered to a group of elderly women, "Poison, assassination, and treachery. These are the watch words of Dorne." The ladies turned to look at him, "And who lets these vile beasts into our homes?" Balon left the question unanswered but it was clear he was referring to the King and his supporters. A man and his child stared at the septa's corpse and Balon hissed, "If they try to murder their own are any of us safe?" The little boy looked up, "Am I safe?" Balon looked down and smiled, "If you see someone with olive skin run away and you'll be safe." The father looked to Balon and nodded in agreement. Balon moved over to a group of boys, squires and pages most likely, "Blackfyre, Fireball, Redtusk, the Red Lion, Lord Tyrell. These are the gallant men to keep us safe from those who trust Dorne and sell our daughters to their perverse lords." The 'selling' was hyperbole but Balon wanted to get the message across. Finally Balon made his way to a group of knights that were quietly whispering, "Dornish poison has affected King's Landing. How long until it spreads to the Reach to bring ruin? If the call comes will you answer?"
