Of all the ladies present, none took quite so long to make up her mind as Lysette Starling. Oh, she was charming as ever, laughing girlishly and walking that delicate line between confidence and humility as she spoke with each knight that came to her with warm regard and genuine gratitude. In truth, though it may not have been obvious, her plan going into it all was the same as she'd done in previous tourneys. While she would allow knights to ride in her honor, she would withhold her favor yet again.
Then Aemon Flowers kissed her fingers and introduced himself, and she realized this was different. As the gorgeous knight spoke his pleasantries, Lysette racked her brain for what she knew of him. He served in House Florent, a powerful House for certain and one who's Lord was known more for his wits than his way on the jousting field. He was a bastard, but a Targaryen one. Good looking. Chivalrous. A man of respected skill, if not as stellar as the Redtusk. His political affiliations were uncertain...but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
She sensed a certain opportunity. Choosing him for her favor would be very explainable, even if she changed her mind later. Smitten by his handsome face, beguiled by his royal lineage...then if he turned out to be disagreeable, for any reason or none, she had an 'out.' She'd been a simple maiden, taken in by a figure out of a children's tale, only to discover the reality was more coarse.
And in giving her favor out, Lysette could buy herself some time by making what seemed to be tangible progress towards selecting a husband.
There was a little too much desperation in the move for her liking, especially after her chat with the Lady Margeary, but it would take time to put that advice to work for her, and this would give her that time.
"Good sers," she addresses the knights who had come to win her over. "Every one of you is worthy of my honor, and my favor. You who ride forth to defend the Seven Kingdoms from all menaces. You who bear not only arms, but the power of our beliefs and traditions and make of them your sword and shield. In the past, when I was a girl, because I could not choose everyone...I instead chose no one. I'm not a girl any longer now though. Ser Aemon Flowers, please step forward."
She beamed at him as he did so, her eyes very visibly caressing his long golden hair and his square jaws. Inwardly her performance repulsed her...the idea that anyone might think her so superficial as this...but it was important.
"Please accept my favor, and take from it all the encouragement I can offer for your fortunes in the tourney."
Her token was a small silk scarf, with the Starling arms on it set on blue, with white trim. It rippled in the breeze as she bestowed it on him.
Then she looked at the other knights apologetically.
"It would be more honor that I could ask, should any of you choose to ride for me. Whatever your choice may be, I will celebrate your wins and take pride that the Reach and the Kingdoms can claim such men as you as their guardians. Thank you all."
