[Chronologically, this occurs during the Vintage Year event. And, if you were wondering, yes, I did name this thread after the translated title of a famous boxing manga, making a deliberate boxing/dancing analogue as well as a pun, it being Thaddeus's first IC thread. ...Well, it amused *me*.] There were men, women, and wine; therefore there was dancing. And Laena loved dancing. Not as much as her departed cousin had, but enough. For those moments, people didn't see a widowed mother, they simply saw a graceful dancer. Beautiful, elegant, graceful. So, whenever she could spare time away from the politicking and other activities requiring her attention at this affair, she danced. Until, at one point, without her consciously choosing to do so, she was dancing with the handsome young Levalle heir. Not that she objected. "Why, Ser Thaddeus Levalle." She spun the name like silk. "How good to see you again. It's been a while. Have you put on some more muscle since the last time we danced?" Laena had no idea whether he had or not, but it was the kind of thing men liked to hear. [Note: We have danced together before, at the Black Tourney, but I don't think anything of significance was said, other than apologies for being away on business when I visited Levalle lands. And even that is now only semi-canon now.] Objective: Charm ID: 13 DR: 3 (Amiable) - due to Attractive Composure: 12/12 First Step - Pre-Intrigue - Status (Breeding) vs Will (Dedication): 9d6k6 24 9 dice, 4 1's. +1D from Courteous Opponent's DR is treated as if their disposition towards you is improved by 2 steps per DoS for the duration of the intrigue. Note that default disposition is +1 due to Courteous. First Step - Initiative: 7d6k5 22

Thaddeus was impeccably dressed in charcoal grey with red accents and embroidery throughout. His cuffs are bordered with a small amount of exquisitely fine myrish lace to add some additional Free Cities style ornament. He was here in part at least to enjoy himself no matter what his father said. So he engaged in conversation, then danced for a bit. There might be better dancers on the floor but what a squire of Ser Raynald Florent might lack at technique in a joust...he brought in technique for social settings such as this. As he spotted his new partner, he broadened his smile and then gave a light rueful chuckle as he replied.
"My dear Lady Pyre, I do say its quite doubtful but if I have any enrichment of said muscles I owe it all to my strict regiment of penmanship. Stroke. Counterstroke. Flourish. Dot. No Blotting." Transition to a quick serious face before once again breaking out a smile. "Tedious work but necessary I find. Your own beauty though most certainly blooms ever fuller each time we meet." Perhaps it did, in truth she had been lovely each time he had seen her so who could know for certain. His father had been impressed with her faculties however so there was more to this flower than the sweet petals displayed. Objective Charm ID: 14 DR 2(Amiable with Courteous but Friendly DR now) Composure: 15/15 Pre-Intrigue FA Status Breeding vs Passive Will(Dedication): 6d6k4-1 15 Presumed Fail Initiative Laena Pyre: 6d6k4-1 21 Your initiative.

Laena flushes lightly and looks down briefly bashfully at the compliment. Even if it was not heartfelt, having a handsome man flatter her looks pleased her. "I understand all too well how the right words reaching the right people can have a grander influence than simply one more sword on the battlefield." She looks back up with an overly-innocent look. "And there are always uses for a man skilled with his hands." She lets the innuendo hang in the air for a moment before continuing. "Have you tried painting, for instance?" Only the hint of humour in her voice confirms the teasing as intentional. Objective: Charm ID: 13 DR: 3 (Amiable) - due to Attractive Composure: 12/12 15 does indeed fail vs my Will First Step - R1 - Charm - TN14: 6d6k4+3+1 23 Nearly 3 DoS! Strong start. The smile maintains at the lady's words but a hint of amusement could perhaps be tracked through his eyes. "Indeed a bit from time to time- as the inspiration strikes and other duties allow. I'm not committed to the art per say but I have a shared sentiment that beauty should be appreciated and explored for its own sake." The words "appreciated" and "explored" are drawn out just so slightly longer than the rest. "What of yourself my lady, what arts or interests do you find pleasurable to pass the time?"
He does his best to return a look of innocence as he delivered the final phrase. A hint of a smile tugs at the edges of Laena's lips. "Ohhh, sadly I've never had much of a talent for art. I do have a few small interests outside of art, though - playing cards, reading, manipulating the fate of kingdoms from behind the scenes." She says all three with the same casual tone. "There's a big contest in that last one coming up. An overly-fancy piece of jewelery and an uncomfortable chair to the winner. Or their champion, at least." Always a risk, but she suspects he might appreciate the irreverent approach. She pulls a sour face. "Still, I'm sure we both would appreciate a break from that particular subject, for now. It's seemingly all anyone wants to talk about, so let's not be boring and follow the herd. Plenty of time for that later. Instead... hmm.. tell me who came on your arm?" She leans in slightly, a teasing smile on her face. "And who might you have preferred? The Seastar doesn't count - too obvious a choice."
Oof! Barring some incredibly lucky rolls, I think that's me done. Objective: Charm ID: 13 DR: 3 (Amiable) - due to Attractive Composure: 3/12 First Step - R2 - Charm - TN14: 6d6k4+3+1 25 ...Talking of incredibly lucky rolls! 3 DoS. 12 Influence - 2 = 10 composure damage! Still in this!

(Very nice roll! But so was my first charm one also. Will be revisiting the intrigue page but this was a great exercise as I am realizing I glossed over the Frustration section as my eyes were drawn to all the technique options etc)

Always a risk, but she suspects he might appreciate the irreverent approach. Thaddeus listens intently before he breaks into a very genuine if short laugh. His face turns more serious for a moment and his voice lowers a half step. "Spoken like a dragon my lady."She pulls a sour face. The Seastar doesn't count - too obvious a choice."A large smile returns to his face and his voice regains its normal volume. "I feel confident my lady neither of us need fear falling prey to the mundane expectations of the Reach. With me you say, oh I am certain she was quite noble and quite charming...who I may have preferred though hmmn" Slight pause, perhaps some internal consideration before he continues. Also I dodged that a bit in reference to present company as I don't have enough OOC grasp yet on all the currently eligible ladies...its an in progress catchup activity. Let me know if I made any error on the frusteration/composure.) (Edited/Updated last bit of previous response per discussion-removes some dodge, adds some story relevance but keeps options open as I compile my list of Thaddeus options)

"Who I may have preferred, though, hmmn" Slight pause, perhaps some internal consideration before he continues. "Well while I'm quite content with present company, it may not surprise you to know I'm to learn more of some of your sisters? I'm to look to my future it seems, and my father has many thoughts on the subject." Laena gives an amused smile. "I'm hardly surprised. I imagine your father has thoughts on many different subjects.
"While I may be overstepping, while I could tell you of the virtues of my sisters - Lady Ysilla if you wanted an extra bodyguard, Lady Mya if you wanted an agent of chaos, Lady Daena of House Durwell if you wanted a peer; when a father asks a son to 'look to his future', especially when nearing a great calamity, he's thinking of marriage, and the alliance that comes with it. Your lands are rich, and your friends are few. In which case, the lady matters far less than the house she brings with her. You need to thread the seemingly impossible needle of finding a house powerful enough to be a useful aid and not a millstone, while weak enough to see value in your house. Moral enough to be a staunch ally even in times of need, while morally flexible enough to not be put off by your house's - and, meaning no insult, its current lord's - past.
"And, of course, said house needs to have an unwed daughter, or niece."Leana makes a tsk sound. "Not a small order. While my sisters are perhaps more likely to make up our own minds about people, rather than be put off by what other people say, that does narrow the field even more. Off the top of my head, I can only think of o-" She breaks off as a chance encounter she'd had shortly before comes to mind. "Two possibles. That's not to say there aren't others, but these are who I can think of right now. If your father maintains the loyalties he had last we spoke," if he was still a crown loyalist, in other words, "you may wish to try and catch the attention of Lady Daena of House Durwell. A talented young lady, and her half-brother listens to her, to at least some extent. The issue there is that his loyalties are unknown, and he enjoys making people guess. Still, if you can win his sister over, your house may just work into his plans well enough that you both benefit. Be careful, though. With brother and sister both.
"The alternative idea I had I believe only works if your father has.. reconsidered his prior allegiance. I mean no insult by my words, I am merely presenting options, unaware of your house's intentions beyond survival. I have very recently been re-acquainted with a sister of mine, a niece of House Cuy. Lady Alysanne. Truthfully, I know little of her - at least as she is now, but I can say with a fair degree of certainty that she is not put off by a bad reputation." She shrugs. "Make of that what you will."She gives an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry I can't give you better ideas. As you might imagine, most of my personal interest has been invested in the *other* gender, with my own seemingly just as impossible list of requirements."
Objective: Charm ID: 7 (13-6) DR: 3 (Amiable) - due to Attractive Composure: 2/12 Frustration: 3/4 First Step - R2 - Charm - TN12 - 2 Frustration spent for +2D +1 Inf/DoS: 8d6k6+3+1 31 4 DoS. 20 Influence - 2 = 18 Composure DamageOverkill, but I wanted to make sure I won, since otherwise you'd do the same to me next turn. So, it literally came down to initiative which was only 1 different. Very, very close. As such, I feel it fair that I get +2 disposition from you and +1D to our next Intrigue, and you get +2 disposition from me. I considered only 1, but given that I ended up spending 3/4 of my Frustration, you getting 2/3rds what a victory would get you seemed 'right'. Note that we don't *have* to finish the IC scene now if you want to carry on for a bit.

(Conceded! and +2 disposition generously accepted and the primary target for Thaddeus here anyway along with a non intrigue followup at the conclusion of the exchange. May extend another few exchanges before final closure)
He listens intently at her words, nodding slightly at times as a scholar might follow a Maester's lecture. No change shows in his demeanor as any reference to House Levalle or his father could be noted. Though at times it was tedious, in this case if few others, he did believe it to be a more a factual assessment rather than any slight.
“He does my lady, on some we agree and well we would not be the first son and father to disagree from time to time. However from my vantage, your steps have been well-measured both in stride and pace. I would endeavor to say they even leave a partner in a position to perhaps put their own best foot forward. I appreciate your insights on your sisters and will give them deep consideration. Would you possibly have any other eligible friends or ladies that you might recommend to my attention?”
He gathers his most winning smile before continuing further.
“And please if I can be of use in your own related invested pursuits, do let me know. We may have less friends than some but we do have diverse interests both economic and otherwise. Along with often I find...a more willing and winning disposition.”
(If you have any other initial thoughts on options, he will graciously take them with thanks...as I personally find them helpful to flush out options/notes on the list I'm working on.)

“I appreciate your insights on your sisters and will give them deep consideration. Would you possibly have any other eligible friends or ladies that you might recommend to my attention?” There's a long silence. Laena actually closes her eyes, trusting her partner to not let them dance into anyone else. Thaddeus can see her eyes moving around beneath her lids, and feel her fingers in the hand clasped to his twitching. He can also see her face steadily falling as she mentally crosses more and more candidates off. Finally, she opens her eyes. "I'm sorry, I can only come up with three possibilities, and I can offer no personal insight on any of them, or their lords. I don't even know their political leanings. Lady Ellyn Roxton, Lady Olenna Redding, and Lady Shiera Woodwright. They may view the idea favourably, or they may take insult. ...The only thing I can add, if memory serves me correctly, is that Lord Roxton is giving his daughters - strong willed and opinionated both of them, I believe - remarkable leeway in choosing their own husbands. Though I cannot say if that would be good or bad for you."“And please if I can be of use in your own related invested pursuits, do let me know. We may have less friends than some but we do have diverse interests both economic and otherwise. Along with often I find...a more willing and winning disposition.” She gives him a small smile. "I have not forgotten that, in my hour of greatest need, your father sent me help - unasked, unexpected, but not unwelcome. How people react to your times of need can really tell you who your friends are. I will remember your offer, and thank you for it, heir of House Levalle."

As she drifts into her thoughts, he effortlessly navigates them across the floor awaiting her response. Though I cannot say if that would be good or bad for you." "That is both remarkable and interesting on Lord Roxton and his daughters. I thank the lady for both her time and thoughts." It was very interesting, uncertain if it would be useful but most definitely interesting. She gives him a small smile. "I have not forgotten that, in my hour of greatest need, your father sent me help - unasked, unexpected, but not unwelcome. How people react to your times of need can really tell you who your friends are. I will remember your offer, and thank you for it, heir of House Levalle."He nods in return, seemly pleased with both the smile and words. After a brief moment, he puts an exaggerated resigned look on his face. "My lady I fear it would be ungentlemanly for me to monopolize your time any further, with so many other great noble Sers present and no doubt growing jealous with envy. I would however share a recommendation of a tailor near the harbor here of which I had a most engaging discussion on the virtues of various styles, cuts, fabrics, and ornamentation of Westeros style compared to the Free Cities..."
He lets out a short laugh as he catches himself blathering on a topic likely to bore his partner than not. " My Lady I apologize as I certainly digress but in summation I found his goods quite pleasing and a pleasant surprise. Why there was even one pair of gloves, I was certain the Smith had crafted just for me with the Father's blessing. I feel confident you could find something similarly suited should you browse his wares."As the current melody appears to extend for a few lingering moments before reaching its conclusion, he offer his regards before scanning the room for his next partner. "I bid you enjoy your evening Lady Pyre. Till next we meet."(Close from Thaddeus's side on this engagement. If the lady continues to the noted tailor's shop there would be a small post or pm for flavor/fun)

"I bid you enjoy your evening Lady Pyre. Till next we meet." "Until the next time, azantys hen udra."[The next morning afternoon...] On a walk to try and clear up the last of the fog in her head, Laena remembers Ser Thaddeus putting strange emphasis on a tailor. She didn't *think* it was a subtle insult to her fashion, so could it have been some kind of hint? About what? Gloves? He did mention gloves. And gloves conceal hands, and hands are used to move pieces... Laena shakes her head (then immediately regrets it). There was no way to know for sure without going. Reasonably confident that he would have no interest in setting up a trap for her, she diverted her walk to find this tailor. First Step - Awareness (Notice): 5d6k4 9 Oooh! Nice dresses! On identifying herself to the tailor (while keeping an eye out for potential kidnappers, just in case), he briefly went into the back room, and returned with a note and a bundle of packages. Huh.

A number of staff, likely other merchants and customers are milling around the shop. Some travel in and out of the backroom to the front displays. One in particular notes her arrival before deftly departing on other business. First Step-Conclusion Deception(Disguise): 6d6k4 18Note(It should be noted the penmanship is superb which is at contrast with the messy illegible signature present at the bottom): Patron- I appreciate your recent evaluation of my business prospects. Know your words carry value in my establishment and any other recommendations in regards to my current/future business endeavors or trends in the region would be welcomed. There would be value to my shop to ensure we are aware of the latest fashions and could ensure our valued clientele would be properly dressed for each occasion. I hope you will keep my establishment in mind for any future routine or custom orders that you might require. In the event that your order was not as pleasing to you as hoped, please send word and I will gladly ensure a suitable replacement is provided. Master XXXXXX(illegible signature) Wrapped Bundle with 3 items: 1) Small bottle of superior scents from Lys(essentially an expensive women's perfume. Primarily would be flavor but perhaps there could be an opportunity for refined/wealthy NPCs to notice if worn and either be impressed or jealous depending on their natures if Father would find it suitable) ~1000 SS 2) Essentially a red dress(nobles garb) for a young girl, estimated in size as much as possible to your daughter's known age. The quality is a about mid tier for nobles but with more add on additional flourishes/accents than typically expected for that level. A small layered touch of myrish lace on the collar adds ornamentation. ~400ss 3) Essentially nobles outfit for a young boy, estimated in size as much as possible to your son's known age. The quality is about mid tier for nobles but with more add on additional flourishes/accents than typically expected for that level. Charcoal grey with noted red flourish/accents of a similar color scheme at least to what Thaddeus wore at the event.~400ss (The note and scents are the key items and clearly for Laena. The outfits are gifts as well but also a plausible cover for Laena to have visited the tailor shop to begin with).

After skimming the note, making sure nothing in it was time critical, she thanked the tailor and left, taking a circuitous route back to her tent, where she carefully read the note, smelled it, looked at it while holding it up to the light, gently warmed it, and anything else she could think of to reveal any potential hidden message. But no, the message seemed simple and straightforward. The gift of perfume was lovely, and she'd be sure to use it on special occasions.
But those gifts for her children... Laena simply wasn't sure how to take them. It felt very... personal. As if he'd bought her underthings, but without the intimate implications. That Landar's gift had the same colour scheme as Thaddeus' was not lost on her, but she had a half-dozen potential meanings dancing around her head.
Laena rests the side of her head on her hand, elbow resting on her table as she stares at the note and gifts, possible implications of any and all of them fighting each other in her mind over the remains of her hangover. She groans in frustration.
"I need a drink."
