Lysette wasn't sure who she could trust at Kingsbridge.
Her father was, of course, someone she had an undying loyalty to, and there were a few good knights who she believed would help her if she asked for it. But since her wedding day and as tensions grow further towards war, it has become apparent that there aren't many who favor the King and his right to the throne as Lysette does.
It made it increasingly difficult to know who to share her feelings with, and even more so with champions like Wildfyre roaming the halls as well, pulling most swords to Blackfyre's front when she had barely gotten an opportunity to speak.
That was going to need to change.
Lysette was aware of one, though, who she used to be much closer to. Roland Cordwayner was a knight of honor, impressive skill and the closest thing she would consider to a brother besides Addam, though, he didn't seem to share her feelings as Roland could.
She decided it was about time for them to reconnect; surely, if her memory didn't fail her, this would be a conversation in politics and less of a debate. She asked her handmaid to fetch him for her, and bring him to her chamber; no reason to do it anywhere else. She was known to spend a lot of time there, books being the only company she has shared for weeks, the towers of tombs a testament to the claim. She would be sitting, scouring over something written in Valyrian, her blue eyes tracing the pages as he entered.

Hugh Blackwood, Roland's squire these past years, was sent ahead to announce his master's arrival. The typical Blackwood slight build was a marked contrast to the fully grown Roland, a tall and powerful man even by the standards of the well bred and well fed nobility.
The young knight bowed to his lord's heir, now having taken to wearing the Cordwayner arms alongside House Starling's winged bridge. A further contrast, this time with his previous attempts to distance himself from Hammerhal.
"My Lady Lysette, your father's knight is at your service."
Books, always with her head in a book. Still, she emerged from them long enough to find a worthy husband and is an adornment and an honour to her father's house. She is half a maester herself, Kingsbridge may prosper with a knight of the mind to rule with a strong Andal knight beside her.
Roland expected the odd knight to now seek service elsewhere as Lysette's hand was taken, but many would stay with the Companions due to the body's camaraderie and reputation.

Lady Lysette pulled a rambunctious strand of hair away from her face as she looked up, smiling as he came in. Her garb was less formal and more comfortable then she was typically seen wandering the halls of Kingsbridge with, but was certainly still signifying of her status. The deep blue a complimentary contrast to her pale skin and golden hair, yet, it brought out the darkness of her eyes, and it is obvious that she is troubled by something.
She set down the book, beaming at him, "Ah, sȳz naejot ūndegon ao. Nyke istan-" she caught herself, the surprise visible on her face before she let out a laugh, bringing her hand to her temple, rubbing slightly, "Well, that is what I get for reading Valyrian for the past..." she thinks for a moment, looking over at the melted wax that has now solidified and made a bulbous chunk on the table, "Six candles. But, I suppose as they say, 'Ziry iksos skoros ziry iksos,' it is what it is."
Lysette stood, gliding over to a more comfortable seat as she gently let herself down, gesturing to one of the chairs near her, "Please, don't feel as if you have to stand for this entire encounter; leave that to the strapping young Blackwood who came with you," she laughed again, smiling coyly at Hugh and giving him a sly wink. She waved her hand at the wine tray that was conveniently close, "But do feel free to make yourself as comfortable as you like, the both of you. It feels like it has been eons since we last saw each other and sometimes a nice glass of wine helps facilitate that reconnection."
Now comfortably sat, she finally got enough time to look at his apparel, and the arms that adorn it. Her eyes gave a slightly quizzical stare, "Now when did you start wearing the Cordwayner crest?" She held up a hand, defensively, "Not that there is anything wrong with it; I have always thought it to be a beautiful escutcheon, but it is not something I thought you were interested in wearing?"

Roland took the offered seat, reaching for a goblet with his left hand.
"Ever since the outrages by my bastard brother and sister by marriage at Highgarden my lady."
"I realised that avoiding the humble boots of my blood may have dissociated me from ill deeds I wanted no part of, but it meant all the court knew of House Cordwayner was from frauds that claim Hammerhal's arms."
"Better to take up my family's colours and do better deeds in them, so all the realm knows there are those loyal to the King and chivalry that wear the green and gold."
Seldom one to find his feelings beyond the bounds imposed by knightly behaviour, Roland's tone towards Normyn Flowers and Maegelle Cordwayner was contemptuous.
"Highgarden was just the start of my sister by marriage and bastard brother's latest wickedness. I sincerely believe they slew my brother - the tale of him choking on a chicken bone is a fanciful fiction. I mean to prove as much."

She nods, picking up a glass for herself, "An aspiration that should become a reality. I admit, while I have remained quiet these past few weeks, my ears have been open. From what I have heard, the events of your brother's death are not as simple as those in Hammerhal are attempting to frame them as." she let out a gentle sigh, "A tragedy that will not go without justice. I am sorry for your loss," her tone was sincere as she looked at Roland, giving him a reassuring smile.
"If there is anything I can do, please let me know. House Cordwayner needn't be known for the frauds; and with you sporting the green and gold, I am certain your honorable deeds with outlast even the most dubious of plots brewn by the iniquitous pair,"
Lysette takes a sip from her chalice, pulling it away from her lips as she starts, "The reason I called you here was for a few reasons; firstly, to reconnect. I once considered you the closest thing I had to a brother, and as time has slipped by and the Realm has continued to spew out its unyielding tragedies, I fear that that bond has been strained, at the very least." She looks over at Roland, eyeing him firmly, "As I have said, the Realm is relentless in its attempt to ruin the lives of everyone, and it has made me realize how important the bonds I share with all of House Starling truly are. Which brings me to the second reason I wished to speak with you, though, I feel as if you have given me the answer already," Lysette leans back in her seat, bringing the wine in front of her stomach.
"With the upcoming rebellion, who do you side with?"

Roland laid out the Cordwayner case as he had done for others that would listen.
His brother's words at Summerhall, suggesting he intended a confrontation with Maegelle Cordwayner. Roland was certain this had precipitated a fatal confrontation.
Ilyn's fondness - much mocked - for breast over the richer dark meat on the bone. The damning absence of a letter from Hammerhal to inform Roland of his brother's 'fate'.
He notes that he is aware of one that heard Lord Ilyn's fateful declaration, the very words that doubtless doomed him. He does not, however, name Gwayne Oakheart, unwilling to risk the squire's identity as yet despite his trust of Lysette.
Normyn Flower's lost duel to House Levalle's own man. The need to secure a learned maester who could testify independently to the common Cordwayner colouring shared by Roland, his brother, their father and countless famous Cordwayner knights before them.
"Only a fool would ignore all of this evidence."
As the conversation turns, he is frank on political matters.
"The upcoming rebellion as you put is a sorry but indeed appears inevitable. I can see no just cause for it, simply ambitious men seeking to ride a better man to improved rank and status. And hateful men seeking to settle old enmities alongside them too. No cause that permits Otho Bracken or Balon Blackbriar to commit public murders will find me among its supporters."
"However many friends I have among likely rebels, however high my esteem for Ser Daemon Blackfyre, I swore oaths. I am the king's man good and true, few can doubt such."

Lysette smiles, taking another drink from her glass, "It is good to know that not all the men in my father's service view Ser Daemon with a higher regard than that of the oaths they made to their King. The esteem many put him in is warranted; he is a skilled bladesman, and can inspire many. But, as you have said, the faction is not only forged out of respect to Blackfyre. The morals of Lord Bracken and Ser Balon are questionable, at the very least, and at the worst completely unforgivable. How he can claim to be such an avid follower of the faith I know not," she ponders for a moment, before recounting, "Though, from all the tragedies that have befallen his house I believe the Seven have a... unique sense of karmic justice."
She looks at Roland, speaking with a reassuring tone, "Please know, your loyalty to the crown was never in question. But I do find it best to have someone else reveal their cards before utilizing assumptions to make decisions." She gives a soft chuckle, standing up and beginning to pace slightly as she speaks. She has done this in front of him before, multiple times in the past as a way to organize her thoughts, but it has been a long time since then. She speaks quickly, almost purging herself of words, "I fear for House Starling. My father's neutrality is both a benefit and a curse, for different reasons; though, I feel as if the curse part of that nature greatly outweighs the benefit. On one hand, those who view the Brackens with high regard and Blackfyre with adoration are allowed to do as they please and remain a loyal part of the Companions. My cousins chiefly among them. But, and this is a huge but, I fear for how the King views his loyalty. The last thing House Starling needs is to be considered anything except loyal to the crown, especially when the alternative is filled with glory hounds and prejudiced old men who are willing to kill innocents and perform other atrocities without repercussions." Lysette lets out a frustrated grunt, a fire behind her blue eyes as she takes a large gulp from her glass, swallowing with a scowl.
"We need to convince my father to publicly announce his support for the King. I don't know how, but it needs to be done, and certainly before too many blades draw unnecessary blood." Lysette looks over at Roland, "Can you help me with this? I have a few ideas when it comes to how to acquire a maester for you, one that certainly doesn't wear the Cordwayner colors, and will do what I can to get him if you do," She smiles, coyly, "I was planning on doing that anyway, but sometimes favors require favors in return,"

Roland was no stranger to revealing his cards. Indeed, some of the crueler wits at court had pointed out he sometimes seemed to be playing without a full deck.
"He stood for you and House Starling against Rennifer Waters, even if he could not overcome the blackguard's dishonourable tricks."
False modesty prevented Roland from noting that he himself was one of the few to have done so, albeit absent skulduggery from his foe.
He drank from his goblet, pausing and setting it down on the table with his left hand.
"I do not share your father's views on how men serve in the Riverlands, and things would be different among those I ruled at Hammerhal. But I do not rule, here or at Hammerhal so knights may do as their ambitions compel them to do, rather than as their oaths demand."
"Then let us both do the right thing for the right thing's sake. That at least is what your father has always sought to do. A neutral maester testifying to likely Cordwayner breeding can only aid justice and my brother's memory."
"If by word or deed I can aid you in having your lord father declare for the king then you need but ask. My only disappointment would be not to have acted on the opportunity already, but should you spot a gap I shall charge in to it."

Lysette gives a nod, "And I am ever indeed thankful for it, but I fear this will take a subtler touch than a charge. Father isn't going to be need to be strong armed by any of his knights, he might view such actions as disloyalty, however unlikely. But if he were to be strong armed by me..." She thought for a moment, finger curling over her lips as she pondered, "If we both went to him, or at least, if I had a letter from you personally, where you played a role of a concerned but righteously so loyal knight, playing into sympathies while I played the more vocal, strong opinioned 'radical'," she rolled her eyes, saying the word with a hint of sarcasm, "We might be able to sway him. Where you sooth his concerns while I raise the points against the Bracken side, he just may realize that neutrality is viewed as disloyalty, not as a good alternative for picking a side,"
Lysette smiled, content with the plan, giving a gentle shrug as she looked back to Roland, "A simple case of 'good Goldcloak bad Goldcloak' if I remember the definition of the negation tactic that Maester Donn gave in his book-" She realized she was rambling, and flushed slightly, clearing her throat, "Well, you understand. Does that make sense?"
"As for the Maester..." She pauses, her face scrunching slightly as she decided how to approach the topic, "I had thought about asking the Levalle Maester if he would consider speaking?"

"I would be happy to lend my pen to such a letter, signed and sealed," said he, little heed given to any subsequent trouble such a letter could cause if the political winds shifted in Kingsbridge or beyond. "Maester Donn's plan seems wise indeed."
Roland make a pretense of considering the idea of a Levalle maester testifying, studying his goblet and taking another drink.
[OOC: Roland's passive deception of 2x4 = 8 is likely to easily be seen through by Lystte.]
"The Levalles are unlikely to be seen as neutral in the matter, given the duels the and their sworn swords have fought with House Cordwayner over alleged nephew's legitimacy. Indeed, House Levalle's victories in such are further evidence from the Seven of my sister by marriage's guilt. A neutral maester not seen as partisan towards Blackfyre or the King would be good, ideally some respected figure from the citadel."
"Sadly here I can best find flaws rather than answers, as I know more of troops and tactics than the learned minds of Westeros."

She gives a quick smile and a nod, waking past Roland and touching him gently on the shoulder as she passed, "Thank you, Roland. Should you need help in constructing the letter, again, just say the word. Though," she teases gently, "If it sounds too eloquent I don't know if my father would believe it actually came from you,"
She walks to the table, again, picking up a book to look over its cover; a red journal, with golden patterns littering its leather binding. She bites her lip again, giving a slight sigh, "So," she starts, turning back to look at Roland, "After giving it some thought, I don't know if what we need is a maester, exactly. We need support, and lots of it. If Lord Leo is going to listen to your push and testimony then I believe we are going to need strong backers, Lords and Ladies alike," She walks back towards him, handing Roland the journal, "This is my own personal work. Incomplete, of course, but it has all the Houses of the Reach as they currently stand, or at least based on my observation, in the Blackfyre Rebellion," She sits back down, taking a drink and setting down her cup beside her as she leans forward, "We need support, and those are our options of supporters. Im not sure how many of them I can get to in the coming weeks, but I would be willing to talk to a few to try to pull them to our cause." She smiles, making sure to emphasize the pronoun she used, before gesturing to the book, "Flip through it if you wish, there are pictures, though, more of sketches, not masterful artistry," she laughs lightly, "I cannot be expected to be both scribe and artist; some maester's have that ability, but its one that I lack,"
"I just need to know who you want me to speak to, or who we should prioritize first. If you have already talked to them, that would be beneficial to know as well,"
