Abelar hears of a few older knights who took septon's vows, mostly to make way for their sons or to find a new purpose when they no longer have it in their bodies to fulfill their martial duties adequately. Although mostly they became holy brothers instead, as is the case for the younger who took such oaths to do penance for some sin or foul deed. Abelar hears not of any such who took the septon's path.
Can make up names if you like.

Abelar hears of a few worth looking into. There's Brother Henly, once a freerider. Brother Rufus is old and grey, but is just as strong as when he marched in the conquest of Dorne. One-Eyed Sylas, once a Bracken of Stone Hedge, was a tourney knight in his distant youth, before suffering nether-pox and taking it as a sign from the Gods to live a more holy life.
Should I intrigue one or more of these guys? Still would need to find a knight to do the dubbing--Daeron might.

Whichever knight doing such dubbing is bound for a chivalry hit for going against established Faith doctrine. Abelar could try and see if they are inclined (unlikely) to consider the idea, might have to offer them gold for it. Abelar would also have to consider if he's willing to blatantly break the rules of the faith in the hope that he can get forgiveness in a case where the powers that be have their incentives stacked up towards making an example of troublemaker septons who break church rules (and challenge their own authority and power) as opposed to inspiring mob justice against lords nobody likes.
Probably not the wisest of ideas, perhaps better to push the envelope with not going the full way, but instead try to find septons that also see themselves as knights in all but name, and start teaching knights what they need to know in order to be septons, while staying on the right side of the line. Keep challenging without giving the powers that be anything to ship Abelar off to making mead with Castos.
