Hundreds of knights had at last been whittled down to just two.
Roland Cordwayner had overcome the very man who dubbed him, the great Redtusk, having already prevailed over champions such as Titus Blackbriar and Byren Flowers in earlier rounds.
But now he faced Ser Aerion Flowers, the talented Great Bastard who had overcome Blackfyre himself to win his own place in the final. Such had rightly made the man a great favourite with the crowd. Roland pondered his tactics, keen to avoid misplacing his lance and suffering the same fate as Ser Daemon.

After defeating Ser Daemon earlier in the day, Aerion is as confident as he has ever been. Even with his opponent having defeated Ser Roland Redwyne, arguably the best knight in the Reach, he is still headstrong coming into the match. "I'm glad that it is you I get to face in today's finals," he calls out to Roland, as they both go through the gallant ceremonies as befitting the final. A wise man would know that he means he's glad that men of honour were able to beat out those of more questionable tactics. Not to allow him being in the finals to be wasted, he gives the audience a true performance in horsemanship to get them even more excited, before taking his place opposing Ser Roland.
PR: 21 AR: 10 Health: 12/12 I/W/F: 0/0/0 Tactics
Starting with N+EF+Defensive 3 (a case of 'if it ain't broke'). PR will go to 24.
Would like to roll round by round rather than several at a time so I don't have to write all the contingent tactic changes. But I will likely raise the stakes at some point if Aerion feels he can out ride Roland.

Roland greeted his friend and rival with a wave of acknowledgement and a smile. "Likewise Ser, likewise. No man could deny your path to the final is worthy of a victor's purse. Let us see if we can give this Riverlands crowd a display worthy of a Reach final!" Roland's first pass mixed adventure and defence, mimicking the style successfully employed against him by Ser Titus Blackbriar. v Aerion P1 N,EF,D3: 8d6k4+7 26 6d6k4+1 21 6d6k4 13 - timestamped private forum is correct rather than this, should include HiS which is why static bonus is +7 rather than +5. SiS drops to 18 due to HiS. [OOC - happy to go round by round. Might be a bit patchy tonight as I'm at NCT "parent to be" type classes for some of tonight.]

Aerion takes the same approach that has gotten him this far. always one to keep his eyes on his target, but prepared himself for a harder hit than the one that was delivered. But, after one pass, things were equal, which isn't a bad thing when you're one loss away from missing all the glory.

On the second pass, Aerion continues his feeling out process looking for potential weaknesses in Ser Roland's abilities. Just like with his last opponent, he finds himself walking a fine line between offense and defense, barely managing to break his lance on Ser Roland's Shield. Roland continued with his previous approach, eking out a narrow lead. Both knights had already struck blows that would have unhorsed lesser knights. v Aerion P1 N,EF,D3,SiS;CyB: 8d6k4+7 24 6d6k4-2 13 6d6k4 14 - mislabelled but is indeed P2 in my sequence of rolls, sorry! The intensity of the last few days might be starting to wear on Aerion, as he finds it increasingly harder to lift his lance and find a target. He again is able to break his lance, but Roland successfully deflect all of the force through clever use of his shield. Finals R3 - N + EF + D3 vs. PR 24; SiS; CyB: 6d6k4+5 20 6d6k4+1 17 4d6 15Simple Failure (assuming D3) - Close to Crit fail though! [ooc: Roland lands on chance. Chance card says 'Math error in your favour. Collect all the Glory!']
Aerion can feel the weight of the lance heavy in his arms. He tries to shift his weight slightly to swing it back up at the last minute, hoping to find his target, but unfortunately the exertion over the last few days has taken its toll on him, and his lance slips under and away from both Ser Roland and his shield, unbroken.
Ser Roger, for the second time that day, declares the winner by count of broken lances. The crowd is far less shocked at this outcome than Aerion's earlier upset, but there are some that are still disappointed.
Aerion himself can't help but feel bad, after defeating both Ser Robb and Ser Daemon only to lose in the final, but he was still a good sport. He tips his unbroken lance down and bows to Roland in a show of respect.
As they ride past each other, he speaks. "Today the day is yours, and I cannot think of anyone more worthy to take it. I look forward to our next tilt. We can speak more at your championship celebration!"

Triumph, sweet triumph. Even if it only half as sweet as she that I will honour.
No stranger to tournament triumphs, Roland was still elated at having prevailed at such a grand event and against such a talented foe. Prevailing in the Riverlands was satisfying, both to spread his personal fame and having served at Raventree.
"We shall be seated close together, although I dispute your comment that we lack for worthy alternates. One sits before me even now - if I have prevailed it is only because you spent your energy conquering my betters. Doubtless you shall remind me of such at our next tilt."
After the final, Hugh Blackwood is sent to the Starkwood encampment with almost of the champion's purse and a letter from Roland. Such deeds were better done in private, lest they be taken for self aggrandisment.
"The champion's purse divided according to this knight's judgement of our respective paths to the final. Let this serve as an acknowledgement of the champions you conquered rather than a denigration of the knights I faced.
Ser Roland Cordwayner."
[OOC: 2 coffers from the Champion's purse of 5 accompanies the letter, taking Aerion's winnings to slightly ahead of Roland's at 4 coffers.]

[ooc: how likely is Roland to be offended if the gift is refused politely? Aerion's Proud drawback might not let him accept it.]

[OOC: Not at all, Roland is happy to have the Coffers back! Part of the plan here was to try to step up the petty theft Roland's Blackwood squire engages in and have him not fully hand over the exchanged coin. See if Aerion or Roland notice with an Awareness check and how either man responds. If Roland learns and disciplines the squire harshly it could have complicated his relationship with the Blackwoods. Seemed interesting ahead of the storyline moving to the Riverlands and Blackwood-Bracken conflict.
But this is an easy storyline to trigger again whenever it appeals.]

Tommen receives Hugh Blackwood readily, and announces him to a seated Aerion. Aerion bids him to stay while the note is read, and as it finishes, he tells them man to help himself to the small table of food and drink while he waits further to return with Aerion's reply.
Ser Roland,
I humbly accept your gesture, and I appreciate the methods by which it is delivered. Few more than I would appreciate not wanting everything to be so public, and it tells me much about the kind of Knight you are.
Therefore I am not going to insult your honour by refusing your gift, so I will instead repay your gift with one of my own.
The wine is one of Leana's favourites, though I can hardly stand the stuff. Perhaps you might find Lady Alicent is mroe appreciative of it's flavour, as on me it would surely be wasted.
Let the piece act as a token of good luck. The Dragon is the strongest piece to have in play; It may come in handy to have it close by.
Finally, go with my blessing and my respect, for you have them both in full.
Ser Aerion Flowers
When he's finished, he takes his response and seals it with black and green wax. Taking the Dragon piece from his Jade cyvasse set and wrapping it in a satin cloth, he places it in a sac along with his response and a bottle of arbour white.
Aerion is quite sure that Roland is clever enough to figure out the underlying message, though he will likely look for another opportunity to have another conversation with him in the coming days.
As he dismisses Hugh, Tommen asks Ser Aerion why he accepted the gift instead of returning it just as quietly. Aerion then explains to the young man that though it was possible to return it with no insult given, it was better to instead let Roland know that he considers him an ally out of respect for the man himself, and has Aerion's help if he should ever need it. It might be subtle, or never come to fruition, but either way Aerion still had a large amount of gold that would be beneficial to House Starkwood in the coming conflict.
