With a more limited field of inquiry than she had initially hope for, Lynesse sought out Ser Abelar Hightower, having seen almost nothing of the man since her time with the Hightowers ended over a year ago. Audience Abelar Hightower: 5d6k4+3 20

Lynesse finds Ser Abelar sparring with his uncle Ser Dennis, the right way to become as good as one dreams is to drill against those more capable. As luck would have it, their training appears to be done for today just as she arrives.

Lynesse wears a dress patterned with the colours of her house, a quiet reminder of the ties between herself and House Hightower. Her mother's scarred silver star hangs from her neck. "Ser Abelar, I do so hope I am not disturbing you. I am sure the tournament must be laying many demands on your time," she remarks deferentially, and with a warm smile. "I had hoped to share my condolences for House Hightower's loss when last our paths crossed, at Summerhall, but the high drama of King's ceremony rather eclipsed such sentiments. I was so very sorry to hear of Lord Jon's death at the Black Tourney. He was always kind to me during my time at Oldtown."Her opening remarks are framed by appropriate social etiquette and to remind Abelar of her connections to House Hightower, rather than being an outsider to its interests. Ser Abelar is hardly much older than Lynesse, though only up close is the absence of wrinkles and other signs of the years weathering his face revealed. His beard would be the envy of men ten years his senior, let alone his peers in age whose facial growth for the most part hardly can be described with that word, while making a quick guess place him closer to the former. Like most young men, his gaze has the occasional downward tilt, though at least he manages to keep himself from staring. "My Lady is as kind as she is beautiful, though I believe I have my own condolences to convey, losing a father is bad enough, but one's mother at the same time must be doubly worse"

“I would not say my pain is greater than another’s, for the depths of the human heart are unknowable and incomparable, only that the loss is indeed keen and deep. My mother was a stern woman, but had an abiding passion and piety that lends me strength in her absence,” Lynesse stroked the indentation in her seven pointed star, remembering when Eustace had thrown it at her feet, a grin on his lips. “Lord Jon will be missed by many, and The death of such a great Lord is always a turbulent affair for his lands and folk, as well as his family, like a tidal wave or the sky falling in. Lord Jon always seemed like the stone of the earth, like he would bear the weight of the world on his shoulders and outlive us all. It seems a child’s fancy now,” she sighed mournfully. “How your father’s folk, Abelar? I find I miss the grand sights of Oldtown all the more here in the riverlands, where one cannot even smell the sea.” She provided him the opening to speak of his bid for the regency if that was his wish, for she found in this young knight a wealth of possibilities. "I have, Ser." She glanced downward for a moment, before meeting his eyes in a gesture of candour, "Though I would hope that whomsoever is named the regent of House Hightower can rely on their kin to rally behind them. The Reach cannot stand strong and proud without House Hightower Lighting the Way."Rather than to be drawn into a discussion of Abelar's own merits, she tried to divert the discussion to his support and rivals by acknowledging his case. "You are Lord Brynden's closest male relative, and heir, an anointed knight and a strong candidate for the regency by the scales of chivalry and tradition, the truest test of a man's character." Lynesse outlined these credentials deliberately and emphatically, acknowledging their merit without expressly committing her own support. "And yet there remains much discussion, much tooing and froing between those with blood ties to Hightower's leal vassals, membership of the faith, or perhaps even ill designs upon your House, with Ladies Rhonda and Melara also being spoken of, and Ser Raymun as well." She did not ask how he intended to settle the regency with such serious contention, relying on him to carry the thought forward.

You realize that charm just makes him like you? Meaning the information gained will be what his disposition makes him give freely. Convince would be the more targeted approach to get the specific answers sought. But both tactics has their merits.

Getting him to like Lynesse is also a reasonably high priority, so if that results in less specific information, that's acceptable.
If I boost disposition with a charm victory I think this would push us to friendly and perhaps still net some decent information? I expect some of the information to be valuable, but not particularly compromising or damaging.
If I can't get any of the information I'm flagged with a charm victory, Lynesse will ask more pointed questions , and I will take the penalty for switching to convince.

True and true, Ser Abelar concedes, but is it not so that the uncle and heir, an anointed knight, would be the natural choice for the regency? It would take many years before Lord Brynden can have children of his own, thus it is often deemed best that a grown heir is in command so that a second loss of the lord in a short time would not cause any further disruption. Lynesse sense nothing about him to suggest that he is anything like her own uncle when it comes to facilitating such a tragedy.
She wouldn't know if charm will get him friendly enough to trust her with what she wants to know. DR: 3 ID: 13 Composure: 3/12 Objective: Abelar wants support for his own bid to the regency. Convince: 5d6k4+4 22 3*3-3=6, looking at frustration territory I believe.

"Stability is a boon for any house, and your elevation would serve that end well", Lynesse nodded agreeably. "Perhaps some of your kin, particularly the older generation, see in you the boy you were, rather than the man you have become. My father always complained that Lord Karl did such with him, seeing him as a boy who played with sticks and hobby horses, and not the man that rode the lists and put himself to the hazard when honour demanded it."
"Even such an impressive beard as that could not dispel the nostalgia of aunts and uncles." Lynesse teased gently, nodding toward his chin. "Ser Raymun might seem to such folk the surer choice, simply because he shared so many long years by your father's side. The most direct way to convince those within House Hightower might be the counsel of those outside, who are less misty eyed and see you as you are."Lynesse's words are weighted carefully, serving as both tentative advice, and something of a fishing expedition. Would he take the bait and distinguish himself from Ser Raymun on policy, and reveal something more of the support he hoped to count of within or outside House Hightower?
