A second Appleton, although at least mercifully the youngest of the three rather than Ser Lewyn, who was more experienced, naturally gifted and a "spare" like Roland, free to train on martial matters rather than concentrate on a lord's duties. It was little surprise that he was the best of the three Appletons in the saddle, itself a mark of respect as the trio were a fixture of the tourney circuit. Familiar with the touring Appleton's from many small tilts and the Black Tourney, Roland was familiar with his opponent's abilities and likely approach. Ser Martyn is just about good enough to possibly be the pebble that makes Ser Roland tumble, it is not likely to happen, but over seven matches, the small odds of slipping up in each individual tilt adds up to not quite so small odds of slipping up one time too many.

Roland's aim continued to be better than his horsemanship, a failing that a champion jouster may have made him pay dearly for. For now, such was enough to prevail once more. Ser Martyn was no slouch in the joust, and had things gone differently, he could have taken Roland from his seat. Alas, things did not and he was cast down from his seat on the first pass after a mighty blow from Roland the Revenant.
