When he finally saw Highever on the horizon, Daeron was both impressed and envious of Ser Parmen's castle. It was larger than what many proper lords held, which made it an extremely impressive holding for a mere landed knight. However, despite the obvious wealth of his lands, Ser Parmen seemed relatively humble about it all. If he played his cards right and knew when to break away from the Spongeholder's service, Ser Parmen might easily become Lord Parmen in his own right.
Such things were his goal as he took up the young knight's offer of hospitality and hoped that he was not already too much of a Levalle for his words to have no real meaning. To be turned away from the gates of Highever would be a small, but pointed embarrassment to the Great Bastard.

"Wyldfyre! You should have let me know that you would be arriving today and I would have had men to meet you on the road and escort you in." Belying his words Parmen's face broke into a broad smile as he moved forward to greet Ser Daeron who was descending from his horse in Highever's main yard.
"Come, come, Alys is waiting inside and is eager to meet you. I'll introduce you two and we can break bread together before we show you to your chamber. From there you can freshen up and relax if you like or we can show you around Highever. I trust that you will sup with us tonight? We won't have a feast prepared but I think we will be able to celebrate your arrival in good form."

The Great Bastard enjoys the attention and company. Often he is part of a larger and more prestigious retinue, so for him to be the guest of honor in his own right is a rare privilege.
"Ser Parmen, you honor me."
Looking down at his dusty clothing he quips,
"The road from Oldtown isn't long, but at this time of year it leaves its mark on travelers. If I am to be a guest at such a grand castle, I should at least look the part rather than roaming around looking like a common hedge knight who has wandered in out of the country.
First things though, I would be delighted to meet Lady Alys."

"Ser Daeron Wyldfyre, it is an honor and a pleasure to welcome you to Highever," Lady Alys Redwyne greeted him in the main hall. It was small compared the great hall at the Arbor or even at the Tear, but it was well-made and more than sufficient for a landed knight. On feast days it could hold a fair number of men but right now was empty aside from the Alys, Parmen, Parmen's squire Edwin, a few servants and their newly arrived guest.
A servant had already arranged platters with bread and salted butter. There was also cheese, cold meats and fruit. To wash it down Alys had brought up a crisp Arbor gold, strong enough to
"I watched you compete at the Black Tourney and my husband has told me about you. We are happy to welcome you as our guest. Please let us know if there is anything that you require, and if we can provide it we shall."
"May I ask how the trip was from Oldtown? We completed the same journey shortly before you did, returning from the Star Trial for Abelar. I had heard that you were there as well and fought a duel?"

Accepting their offers of bread and salt, Daeron is quick to then accept the other hospitalities offered to him. Kingsbridge was a strong castle, but House Starling had come by its reputation for austerity fairly, which made everything set in front of him even better.
"I thank you for your hospitality my lady, but fear not for us Kingsbridge Companions are known for being easy guests to maintain."
His quick smile and manners were second nature for him from his days at Driftmark where formalities and manners were literally beaten into him by his various family members and tutors.
"The trip was an easy one, though the roads and inns were quite busy. We were not the only ones who were in Oldtown for the Trial and the increasing tensions within the kingdom as well as rumors of Dornish raiders have merchants racing to complete trades before prices fluctuate too much.
As for the Trial, I indeed was present and spoke out against that mad septon, though the Seven seemed to favor your husband more than myself in our duels. Ser Aubrey Ambrose, though a friend, did not hold back against me and forced me to yield. We could have continued our battle, but I fear that it would have just ended in further unnecessary bloodshed rather than any satisfying conclusion."
Even though he held little love for Lord Alliser and his tricks, convention dictated that he respond to her line of questions with his own.
"Lady Alys, how fares your family? Has your father found a suitable husband for Lady Ellyn? Has your goodsister, Lady Lyanna, recovered from her accident?"

"I am glad that you and Ser Ambrose were able to settle your duel without further bloodshed or injury. After the Black Tourney it is good to see that their are still men of honor left in the Reach."
"You are kind to ask Ser Daeron. We are as well as can be hoped in these troubled times. My father and my sister are still searching for her future husband. I suspect that they have different ideas of what suitable may entail. Whoever does eventually does take her hand will be a lucky man and I hope that she will feel lucky as well on that day. My good sister is...resting after her accident."
"Now let us allow you an opportunity to wash and refresh yourself, after which I am sure that my husband is eager to show you our home before supper. Please let us know if you would prefer to use the time to rest up, traveling so soon after a your duel must exhaust even the strongest?"

"Well I wish her all of the best as she convalesces.
Thank you once more Lady Alys. The hospitality of Highever is everything that your husband promised."
He then focuses his attention on Parmen.
"Ser Parmen, if you could show me around your holdings? I'm sure that we have much that we can talk about."

"Certainly, let us start with the solar, it is near to your quarters anyway and will give the servants time to change the rushes."
The solar of Highever is a large room. The decorations are an odd mixture of Levalle luxury mixed in with Parmen's own more functional style. Along one wall stands a shelf containing a few rows of books. Military volumes and histories, some recently borrowed from the library at the Citadel, are mixed in with nautical charts and logs plus a few treatises on leadership and running a domain. There are even a few romances and nature books, which Alys brought with her. On a table lies a well-made map of the region with all the major castles, towns, and bodies of water marked out.
"Do you care for wine? We also have cider. I'm embarrassed to admit but I developed a bit of a taste for it as a squire for Lord Fossoway."
"It is good to see you Ser Daeron. These are dangerous times and I am glad that you have managed to take care of yourself."
"Now, aside from hunting and sparring what can I do for you at Highever?"

He runs his hands over the wooden inlays of Ser Parmen’s bookshelves and desk, admiring its beauty and durability.
He gives a gasp of mock concern.
“A Redwyne, drinking cider? Butterbumps would never let you hear the end of it.”
When his hands run across Parmen’s personal sigil, the Redwyne grapes quartered with the Levalle fox he turns to face him.
“Would you consider yourself more of a Redwyne or more of a Levalle?”

"I am a Redwyne serving my good-father, Lord Levalle." Parmen's voice is friendly but serious. He nods towards his sigil behind Ser Daeron "The grapes are mine by birthright, the fox is mine by right of deeds done and oaths sworn."

He nods in understanding, Parmen’s answer was what he expected. “What then if your family and your wife’s family come to blows? They sit in opposing political camps and it seems that the Realm is creeping towards war with every passing day, so it’s not an unlikely scenario.”

Many of us would be forced to fight against kin no matter which way we turned." Parmen wondered on which sides of the line House Starling would find itself and if House Velaryon, closely linked to the Royal House would fight with them or against them. "Slowing the rush to war is crucial. Do you have ideas for how this could be done?"

“You are correct in saying so, and hopefully the gods are merciful enough to keep men from kinslaying, for none are more accursed.
As for slowing the war, it appears that the Royalists have already struck, first by murdering Lord Jon Hightower and then Lady Helicent Cockshaw. If King Daeron is hoping to calm the fire, then pouring oil on it is an odd method.”

"Agreed, the growing violence is disturbing. Why, just recently I heard that Lord Desmond was murdered along with his entire retinue! The new Lord Bridges seemed like an unlikely man for Blood supporters to target, but perhaps there are other rogues at work here. I would hate to believe that anyone who supports Blackfyre would stoop to such a level." "What do you propose, my friend? As a dragon yourself you are far more comfortable around fire than I am."

He winces at Parmen’s cutting remark. They both knew that it was someone on their side who ordered that attack, likely Farman himself. “Perhaps a response to previous attacks? Neither faction can afford to look weak in the face of aggression, even though King Daeron seems to have no qualms with it. His inability to keep a bastard blackguard in line in his own palace is the perfect example.
As for action? I suppose that is up to you and your conscious, but you know in your heart that the realm needs a strong king who can provide stability and peace, not one who permits blackguards to strike women openly in his presence. Bringing Highever’s banners to Brightwater Keep or the Arbor would be a good place to start if, no, when the war begins.”
