A second chance against Lord Durwell without the distraction - or excuse - of a duel the same day.
A blessed day, for the Seven had given him a chance to test himself, to redeem himself. If he should fall he would do so against a skilled champion, and Lady Lysette would have a better knight still to take his place.

For Lord Durwell, jousting is sport and games when it isn't politics, today it was just sport and games, mostly it was politics, actually, today is also politics, if he truly craved victory, he could pick out one of the other companions, Ser Vardis for example, but they'd just rightfully say that he picked an easy match. And nothing worth doing is ever easy, it would just be a chore. He could take Lord Starling, but he would soon only feature in the jousts of past. The future belonged to the likes of the two Roland's, himself, Robb Reyne, Titus, Breakspear and Blackfyre, or at least whichever of them outlived the chaos that would surely claim the life of at least one of the latter. But that is a worry for later, today is happier times. Hopefully. Hope was in short supply these days, but with no Merryweathers or Otho Brackens in sight, Marq figures he might be more optimistic than usual.

Roland rode defensively against Lord Durwell, too proud to simply aim for his opponent's shield in the first six passes. While such could sometimes help outlast an opponent, against a rider of Lord Durwell's flair and skill it risked allowing being unhorsed by an opponent able to adopt risky maneuvers, freed from concerning himself with any serious defence. [P2] Kingsbridge v Marq Durwell 1-6: EF,N,Braced;SiS;CyB: 6#8d6k4+6 24 23 20 27 26 26 6#6d6k4+4 18 26 21 17...- riskiest moment looks to be P4 for Roland, 17 on SiS roll so 3 DoS with Noble unhorses Roland there (with the back-up option of a Blood of the Andals use on that roll). - can then roll out next three passes. Lord Marq first attempts a shift in his weight that almost allows him to twist away from Ser Ronald's lance, switching tactics once he realizes this will not do, he goes full on aggressive, battering his opponent with strikes that would have left all but the most expert horsemen picking themselves off the ground.
Marq goes HiS+D2, N: 3#7d6k4+7 27 27 24 3#6d6k4-2 20 16 15 3#4d6 14 9 9PR 24 A3+HiS+N+EF: 3#7d6k4+13 33 32 31 3#6d6k4-2 16 17 14 3#4d6 14 13 12PR 19 That would be 11*3/2-11, so 5 damage on the 3 DoS hits. Looks like the BoA needs to come out. Marq throws in a heightened stakes going forward. |

Roland will respond with heightened stakes, Noble, Aggressive 3, HiS and EF so we hopefully get a proper finish! Seems reasonable for Proud drawback and hopefully more dramatic!]

With their roles reversed, Roland throwing all caution to the wind and Marq appearing to increase his risk and mitigate it at the same time, drama is all but assured. Roland's strike is too forceful to withstand, but his recklessness involved in delivering it gives a jouster of Marq's caliber all the opening he needs to tip him out of the saddle. Both men find themselves on the ground.
Marq goes N+B: 7d6k4+5 22 6d6k4+4 18 4d6 16PR 22 That looks like a 2 Dos vs Marq for TN 20, he falls off, and a 1 DoS vs you for a TN 16, you fall off. Draw, but Roland stays as champion. |

It ends at seven passes, but the Ser Marlon is still with us in Spirit to ward off the Stranger. A relief.
He was not yet quite good enough to dismount a rider like Lord Durwell while retaining his own seat, but he was pleased to have given the crowd a good show and to have remained as a champion for now.
Roland dusted himself off, shouting over to Lord Durwell.
"Well ridden my lord. A holy number to end on, and a worthy draw."
He bowed.
