A Masquerade Ball allows delightful anonymity and with it, the freedom to slander without repercussions, the freedom to misbehave and the freedom to be whoever one wants. Of course, such an atmosphere provides ample opportunity for those wishing to take advantage of the complacency it encourages.
Only characters having completed The Grand Masquerade Ball event and successfully gained entry may partake.
Stage 1: Wicked Hearts and Wicked Eyes
In the relative comfort of their supposed anonymity, and surrounded by friends, trusting in the secrecy of the event to weed out unwanted ears, many a noble becomes more loose lipped than perhaps he should.
You may attempt as many of the following tests as you like, if you do two of them, receive +1b on each, if you only do one, receive +1D on it.
Eavesdrop- awareness (notice)+costume bonus, TN 9 Mingle for rumors- knowledge(streetwise)+costume bonus, TN 9 Discern where the winds are blowing-cunning(logic), TN 9
You may spend a destiny point during this stage to gain +1D to all three tests.
For each critical Failure: -3 total DoS.
Characters can then use their accumulated DoS to gain the following (2 DoS per bonus, each item only once): +2 to all tests, passive results and derived statistics against a random NPC for the remainder of the Chronicle. Blackmail against a randomly selected NPC Information that can be converted into political gain for one's house to give +1 influence (once only) Information that can be used to shift fire/blood (+2 free DoS towards influencing the score)
The following may be gained multiple times: -A random rumor, 1 DoS. -The identity of a random NPC, 1 DoS (max three). -Rumors about something specific, 2 DoS. -The identity of a specific NPC (Once), you must commit to pay a number of DoS equal to their costume bonus (narrator makes the test for the chosen NPC, only available if you scored 4+ DoS).
Stage 2: In Hushed Whispers
During this stage, you may attempt to put out a rumor, adding the costume bonus to the test, this comes in addition to your normal limit. A rumor in support of fire gains +1D. The normal limits to influencing Fire and Blood are still in effect, but each character may attempt to influence the score, and the highest DoS per score per house counts. All other characters succeeding on their test gains 1 DoS towards influencing the score. Breaking disguise to gain your chivalry/virtue (and possibly status) rank as a bonus to the test retroactively counts as a critical failure on the disguise test (-3 on all tests involving the costume bonus).
In addition, the TN to investigate the source of any rumors you put out during this event is increased by 2+twice your costume bonus.

It was a thrill, to be someone else. Or maybe more accurately, to be herself as she would be if she didn't have to keep up appearances. Yet after indulging in some flirting and prying rumors and tales from partygoers, she quickly found herself falling back on what she knew best...listening more than speaking, thinking more than doing. There were layers and layers going on here, and much that keen eyes and a sharp mind could discern.
Then, feeling a wish to countervail some of the sentiment she'd detected the past two days, she finds places to drop in praise for the King's policies...for the lasting peace they promised, for the prosperity and trade with Dorne that would fatten the pockets of the other Kingdoms. Surely only fuddy-duddies would be overly concerned about their colorful ways when there were such tangible benefits? And arcane minutiae of tax policy wasn't worth treason and war!

Laena strides around, wineglass in hand, exchanging breezy comments with others, while paying them no mind. Instead, she listens attentively to those around her, filing each snippet away carefully, before assembling the pieces into a cohesive whole. Paying particular attention to locating her quarry for later pursuit. Ashara was nothing if not observant, and there was so much to see and hear. In her time in the court of Sunspear she had mastered the art of speaking to one person while listening to another, and had learned the basics of a very valuable skill - seed a conversation with a vague concept, then listen to determine where others took it. In that way she seemed to know more than she did while learning more than she would have otherwise.

Ser Donnel, feeling bored after Lady Sheila left to pursue some tidbits of gossip finds his mind wondering about the statements made by his son. In a swordfight I could beat that knight he is weedy, a good blow would send him flailing. Him over there is shorter than most women! I could easily beat him! Oh, that man looks like a warrior, and young at that, I would struggle with him! Those scars are not a part of the costume, that is certain! Then ser Donnel starts to wonder: can I learn something of which way other knights lean? He spends the rest of the evening looking around, gauging what he has learned this far. Wicked hearts wicked eyes cunning +1d for a single test: 4d6k4 162DOSSer Donnel spends his degrees for +1 influence to his house.

While a ball was not Roland's natural element, he was not entirely untutored in the ways of court. Clad in his Ser Symon Star-Eyes mask, he proved as deaf to muttered gossip as the legendary knight was blind, but the more direct approach of simply engaging other attendees in casual conversation prove more fruitful, just as it had earlier that day when pursuing the vicious gossip about his niece. Where he could, he focused his attention on improving House Starling's standing, quelling rumours where he could and supporting the brave deeds of his fellow Companions where possible. He was keen to build on the fine showing the Starling knights had made at the day's parade.

It allowed one to express themselves more freely. It temporarily evened the playing field between principal lords, lords, and knights. There was no prostrating yourself to societies betters. And much to Balon's liking, it allowed for improper flirting and on occasion, more... At first Balon made his way through the crowd, listening to what people were saying and whom they were saying it about. Soon thereafter he found himself approaching groups of women and if they seemed receptive he'd share bawdy tales with the raunchiest punch lines. His goal was to have them let their guard down so they'd be more receptive to all the positive things Balon had to say about Ser Daemon Blackfyre and his ilk. Like the previous night at the Golden Rose Inn Balon found himself speaking ill of the Dornish and the Blood supporters and highly of the Fire supporters: "You won't find many Dornish at this tournament because they fear our pious Andal knights. And what do most of these knights have in common? They support Ser Daemon Blackfyre!""I heard a large number of King Daeron's supporters are homosexuals. It's that poisonous Dornish blood. Lay with a dog, get fleas I say.""Is it any surprise the favorites in this tournament are Blackfyre supporters? True knights stand with him."
This went on for awhile until Balon felt he'd hammered his message home. After that he looked for some female companionship. There was one in particular he was looking for and he'd spent much time trying to guess among those attending.

[Marq Durwell identity requires 3 DoS
To do Fire/Blood rumors, do a simple intrigue TN 9, typically convince/incite depending on how you frame it. You don't get chivalry/virtue to that test because of the mask, but gain costume bonus instead, Great Bastard should also be dormant for the same reason]

Wicked Hearts Cunning (Logic) +1D: 5d6k4 13 vs TN 9 1 DoS (I'll take a random rumor) No Step 2 action.
While most people saw this as a chance to waive their plots, to Addam, this was a chance to finally relax. A chance to get away from social stigmas and to enjoy the finer things life. While he had hoped to stay out of any courtly gossip, he did hear one good nugget of information.

In his disguise as a fox, Aladale enjoys the ball tremendously. He flirts with a crane wearing a scandalously deep cut dress, gossips with a group of dogs, bears and wolves and enters a drinking contest with a particular thirsty ox. Despite all the fun, he keeps his eyes and ears open hoping to gather any tidbits from guests having had too much wine. As the evening turns to night, he finds himself in a particularly heated discussion with a red-robbed fellow, who appearantly posed as a red priest: "The Fireball is stirring trouble and everybody in the Reach will have to pay for it. He gathers allies and recruits followers for Bittersteel and if they don't back down, this can only end in blood. The blood of our brothers and sisters, sons and daughter, the blood of our smallfolks. It will be our castles that burn and our harvest destroyed. Fireball will only cause suffering for the Reach...!"A mask can tell - Notice (+1b): 5d6k3+2 14 - 2 DoS A mask can tell - Streetwise (+1b): 6d6k3+2 13 - 1 DoS Total 3 DoS for: -Blackmail against a randomly selected NPC -A random rumor A mask can tell - Blood supporting rumor: 7d6k5+2 25 - 4 DoS

The Silent Sister is surprisingly talkative...and naughty. Inspiring carnal thoughts, and offering the tantalizing idea of how playing a dead man to be in her very special care could be like. Dead men, after all, have no secrets from the silent sisters. Lucky for her, no septons have been invited, for she is the very image of everything they dread in such an event, and she does so by wearing a mockery of the garbs of one of the sacred orders. Malyk had arrived long before the guests. Any gathering of this magnitude required massive amounts of organization, and it was organization that he excelled at. Some of the suggestions seemed a bit strange, but he had a history of convincing people to give the strange a try. There are patterns in chaos and people tend to flow like rivers and streams in social settings, bunching up at the banks of this table, that fountain, this tree, that garden, only to move further up or down stream. Carefully orchestrated traffic flow was the key to any party. The guests needed to be controlled but comfortable. Cozy and connected but not claustrophobic. Able to commingle but not feel confined. The young Senechal wore a simple and elegant half-mask in black and white. The right half black, the left half white. This, of course, only accentuated the eyes that stared out from behind the mask and did absolutely nothing to hide his identity. However, it was pretty clear Malyk believed this to be an impenetrable disguise and seemed to be having enormous fun lifting the mask to those he knew to 'let them in on the secret'. Luckily, at a masked ball, his clothes did not seem inordinately out of place. This evening he wore a beautifully tailored coat covered in a floral pattern. It was probably made from an old tapestry, or perhaps drapes. Among the colorful costumes, it fit right in. Less so when he wore such things in the market square. His comfortable black boots were immaculate, polished to a rich shine and well cared for. Under the coat was several belts across his chest holding pouches full of bits and bobs he thought he might need. Black cording in woven leather was wrapped many times around his waist like an odd sash. He seemed to have no interest in the politics and social sparring of the guests. Indeed, the few that he talked to he seemed to treat like they actually were the person, animal or mythical creature they represented. With Malyk, whether this was politeness, insanity or getting into the spirit of the party was hard to say. Mostly he roved the party ensuring that everyone's glass was full, they were well fed, and they were enjoying the party as much as he was. It's somewhat dubious anyone was enjoying the party as much as he was.

Walking around and smiling is the best way to pass unnoticed, stopping for some small talk here and there. Cleyton was trying to get a feel for what people where saying, and while he was a cunning man, sometimes the ability to see things could make it easier to follow the flow of things and learn a thing or two that might come in handy later on.
