"Given how I still feel protective of my younger brother, even now he's a full knight, I think you're right. Those we look out for may exasperate us in *different* ways as they age, but family is never easy." "Better I catch the affliction now, than an hour ago. Else I may have ended up flustered, and relying on *you* to save *me*." She grins at him. "I shudder to think how that scenario would have ended up." "If I would've had to save you my lady we might both be in a crow's cage right now." Would I have saved her if I'd known she was a Starkwood? Balon felt ashamed at the thought considering what she had done for him. "I feel the same way about my younger brother. He won several squire tournaments and was just knighted and yet I still feel protective of him. We have to let them grow up and stand for themselves eventually." Balon shifted uncomfortably for a moment. Laena could tell he wanted to say something but was debating whether to say it. Finally he spoke, "Lady Laena you saved me from Lord Tyrell's wrath when I was a stranger to you and I've thoroughly enjoyed the conversation we've had together. But I must ask you something. And if it offends you I humbly apologize." The knight cleared his throat. "You and your brother are ba..." Balon stopped and rephrased, "were sired by King Aegon. Everyone sees the growing tension throughout the kingdoms between King Daeron and Lord Daemon. Tell me, where do you stand on the issue?" Sent you a PM on Disposition and thread.

"I feel the same way about my younger brother. He won several squire tournaments and was just knighted and yet I still feel protective of him. We have to let them grow up and stand for themselves eventually." "Eventually." She concedes. "Ask your mother how she's doing with letting go of her protective instincts." From her tone, she's clearly expecting the instinct to last. "Maybe when there are grandchildren to fuss over instead." she muses, almost to herself. "You and your brother are ba..." Balon stopped and rephrased, "were sired by King Aegon. Everyone sees the growing tension throughout the kingdoms between King Daeron and Lord Daemon. Tell me, where do you stand on the issue?" "We are natural-born children of the former king, yes. And because of that, many look to us to see where we stand, so I take no offence to your question. Particularly since you arrived after me, and did not see my greeting of Lord Leo. At that time, with the eyes of hundreds on me, I could have made a statement supporting either side, and it would have had *weight*." She pauses for emphasis. "And yet, I did not. Do you know why?" she asks, rhetorically. "I've already given you the answer. Think back to what I said about my future husband. I have no idea who that will be yet, so I have no idea what public statements he's made on the matter, but I do not wish to undermine him. Were it to be that I have made statements one way, and he the other, as soon as the betrothal is announced, my statements will be used to undermine his, along with whispers of a house divided, before we are even wed. How could I support my husband when he has poison dripped in his ear that my every move is designed to help his enemies?" She draws herself up, and sniffs. "Rest assured, when I am wed, my husband and I will be of one mind on the matter."

Balon had hoped he'd get some sort of inkling on her position but she'd deftly declined to answer. Smart woman this one. Any man would be lucky to have her. "You have been most kind in both saving me from myself and entertaining me this long." As the conversation slowly drew to a close Balon asked a couple more questions to Laena, "My lady, I've been thinking about what you said earlier about peace between our Houses. Perhaps tomorrow before the grand parade you could arrange a meeting between me and your brother Ser Aerion. I'd be most interested in meeting the young man." Balon looked around the room before asking, "With so many great knights here it must be hard for ladies to decide whom to grant their favors to." After your response we can call it a scene if there is nothing more you wish to know.

"My lady, I've been thinking about what you said earlier about peace between our Houses. Perhaps tomorrow before the grand parade you could arrange a meeting between me and your brother Ser Aerion. I'd be most interested in meeting the young man." Laena beams at him and clasps her hands together. "It would be my pleasure." I can guess your intentions, given your earlier words, but if not you, it'll be another.Balon looked around the room before asking, "With so many great knights here it must be hard for ladies to decide whom to grant their favors to." There's a momentary pause before she answers quietly. "Yes. I've never had to decide that before. Before now, I always just gave it to my husband. This is the first time I have to make a choice." She pauses, and tosses her hair back. "I probably just won't give mine out. I imagine most knights who ask me are just those denied by Lady Shiera Seastar, or maybe one of my other sisters, looking for a consolation prize. And I won't be second to anyone." She switches to a tone which is warning, but soft, as she looks straight at Ser Balon. "Nor would I welcome one asked out of pity, or a sense of obligation." She sniffs. "It's for the best, if I wish to arrange for a betrothal during this tourney. Can you imagine the scandal should I be betrothed to one man while another still wears my favour? My birth brings enough rumours as it is." Unless you wish to react to any of my comments, sure. We can say our goodbyes and part.

When Laena agreed to arrange a meeting with her half-brother Balon smiled, "Thank you my lady."
Balon pursed his lips in annoyance when Laena suggested a knight would ask for her favor as a consolation prize, "Don't be foolish my lady." He wagged his finger in lighthearted chastisement, "There will be a great many knights that seek you out first. Of course I don't know which is worse, a knight seeking your favor out of pity or the lust I'm sure you stir within them." Balon did his best septon impersonation, "Man's spirit is willing, but his flesh is weak." Balon made sure to speak of men in the generalized sense and not himself. "Again you are wise beyond your years. No need to cause unnecessary complications during your quest to find a new home."
"But if you do decide to hand out your favor I hope your champion advances far. Unless he faces me. Then I'll put him on the ground... hard." Balon winked. "Again you've been too kind to me my lady and I do hope we see more of each other before the week is out. Good evening." Balon bowed to his rescuer before finding a corner to hide in for awhile.

Pedantic point: Aerion is my full brother, not half-brother.
"Thank you, Ser. I am sure we will meet again ere the tourney end." She responds to his bow with a small curtsey, before resuming the task she was on before she played the dashing princess rescuing the knight in distress.
