The fear, excitement, and wonder of the night had been overwhelming enough but now it was thick enough in the air to cut with a knife. Their typical morning routine, much the same as their tournament mornings routine, was also their battle morning routine today. After warming their bodies with some light activity, and then light stretching, they conducted a variety of drills which seemed most relevant for the coming day before eating. The routine gave them comfort and more importantly, focus. Next they fed their mounts and gave them a quick brushing but returned to their pavilion immediately after to set out their arms and armor. Once his arming jacket was on Harold helped his into his plate, securing each with its straps, clasps, or the points from the jacket. After his sword belt came on and he slung his shield the two made their way to the staging areas where the men were being marshalled their positions. The Knights, dismounted, would be dispersed through the infantrymen to stiffen the lines. Mikel and Robyn were not side by side, but managed to be as close as they could within the desired dispersal. Then came the waiting. Mikel and Harold spoke again of Harolds part in the day which was to stay behind the line of battle, pull out the wounded and aid them, and be prepared to protect himself or to flee. Some men fought young, even younger then Harold was now. In fact it was not uncommon for a squire his age to be fighting, but Mikel preferred to give him yet more time and training before throwing him into the line of battle. Harold did not like the plan, but it did seem to relieve him some. While they were speaking with the men around them, preparing themselves for the battle by focus and planning, the waiting ended. It seemed like an eternity while the Bracken men closed the distance, but it proved to be the quickest eternity which has ever passed because sooner then anyone would have believe the two sides were clashing. Mikel kept his shield up and thrust with his sword. Most men, absent training, take long, wide swings which seem to only be directed at the head or body of their intended. Mikel's sword point was taking what it could get, when it could get it. Most of the men coming in were poorly armored so it had plenty to take. His first thrust punched deep into a man's thigh and when he pulled it free bright red blood spurted out again and again as he crumpled into a ball, howling in pain as he clutched his leg. His howls didn't last long. Next he pierced a man's gut, stabbed a man through the foot then the neck after he fell, and then into the back of another who was attacking a man beside him. All that and it was only just beginning.

He ducked the wild swing of an axe and thrust as he came back up, his sword point punching into the man through his arm pit and went deep enough to penetrate at least one of his lungs. As he pulled his sword free somebody had thrown themselves on him, his shield kept their bodies from touching but they were pressed chest to chest. He brought his knee, which was covered in steel, up into the mans groin two or three times before he fell. He stabbed into him once through the ribs and was thankful his sword didn't stick, because there was no reprieve and another man was already setting upon him. Bringing his shield up, he stabbed beneath it and felt that it found its mark.[OOC: Error in 1st round, Cautious made my CD of 14 a 15, it should have been 17. I accept the damage I would not have taken without complaint, it was my fault!]

Mikel constantly checked his left and right to ensure he was beside his comrades, not in front of them or behind. In front his sides were at risk and if he fell behind theirs would be. He thrust into a leg, and then another. Finishing each man with additional strikes as soon as they fell. Suddenly somebody was on his leg, hugging it and searching for a gap in his armor with the point of a dagger. As he bashed at the man's head with the pommel of his sword he was also fending off the sword strokes of another with his shield. The soldier behind Mikel managed to peel the man from his leg, and after several stabs into his torso Mikel slashed heavily into the man in front of him, his sword cleaving the man just below his ribs to the center of his stomach.

He knew his armor had protected him so far as well as his shield had. And now he knew that more experienced men were coming in and coordinating their efforts. While his armor, shield, and sword still worked to protect him and harm others, now he began to take notice of the better impacts falling upon him. There was no pain. The pain would come after unless it was severe enough. There was also no consideration of the impacts or his position in the melee. That was also something which might come later but now all was unconscious action which had been shaped through years of training. The point of his sword pierced a man's chest, then it went into the neck of another. Freeing it he swung back handed and low which took off a man's leg below the knee. One of Bracken's supporters nearby was facing away from Mikel and pushing to his feet. Mikel thrust into the man's back once, twice, three times.

Mikel checked his left and right then looked down at his feet to ensure there were no Bracken man still breathing near his feet. He tried taking some deep breaths but short of opening his helmet he seemed to only get the idea of air into his lungs. Then the lull was over and Mikel brought his shield up to check an overhead slash while he thrust from below. Men came forward, but loosely as they had before which was good, he could already feel the exertion catching up. Soon his technique would degrade; the point of his sword would thrust less precisely, his slashes wider, and his shield wouldn't be held out but pulled against him, using his own body to keep it up. More men fell to him, one lost a hand, another half his head, finally a pierced heart.

21 = 3 DoS = 18 DMG - 1 AR = 17 DMG defeat 24 = 3 DoS = 18 DMG - 1 AR = 17 DMG defeat He wasn't sure where it came from, or exactly what happened, but it hurt. His leg buckled and he fell to a knee, his shield came up instinctively and in a heartbeat he had pushed himself up and was moving back. The man behind him took the hint and stepped around him to take his place, and the second man behind him helped more directly by grabbing Mikel and pulling him back. Taking a chance he pushed his visor up and sucked in lungful after lungful of air. While his visor was up he had a better chance to survey the fighting around him. It was a hard press, back and forth with bodies strewn here and there. Then the man who relieved him fell, a mortal wrestling match began wherein each was reaching for their daggers. Without even thinking of it Mikel's visor was down and he was past the man who had helped him back, who had now reacted just a second slower then Mikel had. An overhead slash opened up the man's back from shoulder to hips, and Mikel thrust forward into the next man who had been coming to assist.

A flurry of movement took place around him as Bracken men swarmed in to finish the disadvantaged Knight and Blackwoods came in to help him. Thankfully, the Blackwood men had been close to him whereas the Bracken men had begun to keep their distance. Two men helped Mikel to his feet and he realized now that he was once again in the third rank, where he had just been trying to catch his breath. He tried again, with his visor down, but before long the first man was pressed - still on his feet thankfully - and Mikel once more moved forward. He took position as second man, pressed close to the first man's back and thrust his sword over his shoulder and into the attacker before taking a half step back. It wasn't even three seconds before he repeated - step, stab, retreat - and another man fell.
