I was thinking of the maneuver more as forcing the opponent back (to deny the aim, mostly), and I could have sworn it was not on the list of things that didn't make much sense, but it is and so that is on me. Stepping a bit back on the whole Round 0 thing though. Ok, I just deleted about 3 paragraphs of analysis & math. In summation not being able to issue orders for round 0 makes being the defender a significant disadvantage, as you are forced to take a boon-boosted attack without being able to get the +3 CD from defensive, and the defender advantage is diminished to a boonless attack against the attacker's defensive stance. If my quick math is accurate (dubious, but shouldn't be too far off), it's on average a 1 DoS gain for the attacker and a 1 DoS loss for the defender, not much on the surface, but when AR is less than damage/dos it is a full 3 damage in each direction, or 150 net hp difference in the attacker's favor. Quick solution for this battle would be to either remove the +3 CD against only the Round 0 attack, or give the Defensive stance to the Blackwoods round 1. Net result would be either both army would be at 0 morale damage or both are at 1, respectively. I have some other thoughts for future battles but I will put those in the mechanics thread. Round 2TFoG R2 command/tactics w DP: 7d6k5 21 5d6r1 22 for 3+3+2 = 8 points. Again selecting +1D and Defensive. TFoG R2 WoF army damage blackwood, bracken: 1d6 4 1d6 3 8 & 6 damage respectively. Blackwoods drop from 175 to 167; Brackens drop from 279 to 273 Bracken attack - ouch. Reduces Blackwoods to -8, morale damage restores 75 to 67. TFoG R2 Aim + Attack, +1D, -1D vs CD 9: 6d6k4 20 3 DoS, 9-2 = 7 Damage * 25 = 175 Reduces Brackens from 273 to 98 (NB: orokos label lists the CD incorrectly, corrected to 9 here.) I did some analysis during the design phase of counterattack, cautious etc and concluded that part was fine, it's still an advantage to the defender since it's two attacks vs one, cautious vs both dampens the advantage, but it's still there. Way I see it, you could have spent points during round 0 to affect what your force did on that turn, but generally less rewarding compared to turn 1 methinks. Seeing his flank at risk at yielding vital ground, Lord Walgrave reacts by directing his own captain to take half his retinue from Old Oak to bolster it, most commanders would not have noticed such a detail, younger ones might have shrugged and ignored the threat, bolder ones would be like to take the gambit that his side would hold for long enough to break the enemy lines. It has been a long time since Lord Walgrave was young, and while none could rightfully accuse him of being timid, he is not know for taking chances. The expletives about the man commanding the other side that he will *not* lose to does not seem to inspire any great fervor among the men under his command to make the Blackwood lines budge.
Hmm, the spend DP to convert +1b to +1D for all tests of one's army may be unbalanced with the bonus to warfare tests, since Davos didn't go for that, Walgrave won't either. Don't want to lose to nemesis: Spends DP to treat last Blackwood attack as a miss (as per burnt DP). It was no surprise that a man who had been invading a neighboring country for longer than Davos had been alive would recognize the danger his flank was in and not fall prey to hubris. However, Davos was also an experienced enough commander not to rely on his opponent to make such a mistake; rather than committing full forces to the weakened flank and leaving his own flank vulnerable, he stays the course - the battle was shifting in his favor, so slow and steady was the best way to go. Not glorious, not exciting.... but most likely to lead to a victory while minimizing casualties. Ah, good to know, I had missed that.
Davos had no compunctions about punishing the ignominious death of the foolish young Reacher knight in the ivy on black masonry of House Kidwell. Perhaps hoping to impress Lord Oakheart and gain service with him, or merely hungry for glory, Ser Roland Fairchild, the younger son of some landed knight of little significance and thus few prospects for advancement than he can claim by his own prowess takes the opportunity granted by the confusion to spur his steed into action to charge the Blackwood lines. Davos could sense that this was the moment that things could turn one way or the other. his cavalry had had done good damage and he could almost smell the morale of the Bracken forces straining to the breaking point. His own troops morale was strained as well, and a crack now could be devastating. "Our cause is righteous!" he calls out, intentionally echoing Lord Blackwood's speech. "We are the hand of the Seven and we will not fail to deliver their justice!"Davos had never been a particularly religious man, and his time in Braavos had further lessened his faith in the Seven, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that his troops kept their heads. TFoG 6 Warfare: 6d6k5 21 5d6r1 17 3+2+2 = 7 3 from pool to get +1D on the attack and +1b on the Morale. Sensing things are about to go wrong, Lord Oakheart abandons his previous caution and commits his reserve in a final push to make or break the lines, glory drunk Reacher Knights cheer as if believing that they now finally are being allowed to charge to break the enemy. If only they knew that Lord Walgrave cares little for such freeriders and knowingly sends many of them to die at Blackwood spears in a gambit to create a breach in the enemy lines so that both sides shatters equally, he would rather not resort to a chaotic intermingling of men like this, but one has to react as the situation demands. The desperation of Lord Oakheart was evident. A sane commander would have withdrawn in good order, keep his men alive to fight another day. There was no point of retreat for the Brackens since he, Robyn, and Mikel had taken Warrior's Seat - if they routed, it would be naught but slaughter. Instead, the Oakhead had pushed his men to their doom. It might also kill a massive number of Davos' men, but that just made it a greater waste of life. The Reachers would no doubt call it 'bold' but anyone with a lick of sense would see it for what it was - thickheaded stubbornness, intentionally putting his army in a kill-or-be-killed situation... and everyone knew that a beast was at it's most dangerous when cornered. With a sigh, Davos did the only sane thing he could short of quitting the field on the cusp of victory - have his men reform into a defensive stance to weather the storm.

The gnarled old warhorse appears to be more calculating than he appears at first glance, with the one hand, he sacrifices freeriders, hedge knights and other men hungry for glory and recognition on Blackwood spears, with the other he signals the Bracken sergeants to disengage in a controlled fashion and merely hold the line, trusting that the center or the right will secure overall victory while he holds Davos' flank to a victory just wide enough for the singers to heap glory upon his command, but therefore also sufficiently narrow to hardly seem to matter in the greater scheme of things. And if the Blackwoods were able to defy the odds there as well, Walgrave's flank would be able to retreat in good order, he doubts Fireball or Bittersteel will be reckless enough to risk that their men would be overrun either. One could certainly hope that young lord Blackwood would not recognize defeat and lead his army to ruin. Lord Walgrave trusts the leaders of his host to not risk their men needlessly, they would be required for the war that matters, but Bittersteel's cool under pressure remains to be tested, and him and Gormon were too reckless in engineering this war. His hatred of Davos and Dorne does not blind him to the realities of war. He did his part, fortune did not favor him this day, fickle fortune that might make a man hailed as a brilliant strategist only to have decimation in store for his host in the next battle. Lord Walgrave found it best not to tempt fate, take victory if offered, but do not allow it's whims to turn defeat into a rout.
I'm not even rolling morale for them, they're disorganized for sure. Withdraw TN 9: 6d6k4 19So that's that, technically, Davos would have to decide to withdraw or not before knowing Walgrave did this, but everything points to intent to keep going, so fast-tracked that part. The fight at the center is long and hard, first it seems as if the men under Bloodraven's command are able to turn the tide of their initial position through sheer will, but weather through miscalculation or merely fortune, the Brackens under Bittersteel pulls the iniative back. Lord Blackwood's opinion of his bastard cousin dims as in his eyes, victory was in their grasp, they needed only stand and slaughter more Brackens. More seasoned commanders would note that the battle hanged in the balance, with the only question being if the two Great Bastards both risking greatly by continuing, but with Bittersteel having enough upper hand to be in a better position taking the risk in pushing forward. Bloodraven probably did the correct thing, but the songs travelling to The Reach are like to be those of a pale bastard without the courage to see who would emerge the victor in this battle of the bastards.
