Rearguard action: -Non-commanders may perform hero actions to prevent damage to the Blackwood forces. -They must commit to five rounds of combat action at a time, they can only yield (and presumably be taken prisoner) or take defeat (which may result in worse fates) in order to quit until those five rounds are done. -For every five rounds of combat between them that they spend to hold the enemy at bay, they improve the condition of one Bracken unit by one step. -This combat is mounted, each hero faces 2 attacks of 5D+2b+1, 6 damage per DoS, each turn. -Each time you defeat an enemy (CD 12, AR 10, Health 12) you add a round to the total tally for improving conditions. -Every 10 rounds of combat, the number of attacks faced per round increases by one. -Which units gets their condition improved is determined by random draw (but everyone gets 1 increase before anyone gets the second and so on).
Presently: -1 Unit of Seasoned Men at Arms -1 Unit of Seasoned Scouts -2 Units of Seasoned Freeriders
All annihilated, every 20 rounds+kills will get all of them up a rating (every 5 gets one unit up a rating), 80 total rounds+kills needed to get them all unscathed.
How to (previous rolls can't be valid because that is knowledge that can be acted on): Daeron should roll for his actions and enemy attacks for first 5 rounds, I'll look at it and run Aubrey's actions, then we continue until we're done.

There is a calmness over Ser Aubrey Ambrose that contrasts with Daeron's more aggressive style and temperament, a deft elegance as his sword dances to keep his enemies off guard and under control, and even though he seems to be drawing more attention to himself than the Great Bastard, he is more effective in pushing the enemy back and away.

While Daeron has every reason to be proud, his very presence fades from the tales to be told of this day until everyone are lead to believe that Ser Aubrey Ambrose held off the pursuit singlehandedly, the gallant knight himself does not let this go to his head and personally compliments Ser Daeron for his valor, but Ser Aubrey is the weird sort of man who kindly brushes off the attentions of admiring women on account of it being poor conduct of a knight to ever act in such a way as might make a woman's reputation to be questioned and whose only vanity concerns his mustache, as meticulously groomed as his sword is kept sharp.

***With 62 Effective Rounds that's a reduction of 12 steps across 4 units. Each unit goes from Annihilated to Bloodied. Interested to see the results of 6 Trained Annihilated rolls for the Blackwoods. Will add some RP after Blackwood casualties. Then go back to the dream sequence of storming the castle.

[OOC: editing in some pro Fire roleplay to my mechanics test "dream" as Roland is on the wrong side to take part but it seemed good to test. greatbastards.boards.net/post/32993/threadSeems rock hard even for a combat specialist like Roland, might (!) be doable with a lot of destiny but you'd have to spend that early and risk it being useless. Plus my post are without fighting Ironhand! Which Roland should have, particularly with a terrible luck roll. In disadvantageous circumstances too. But enjoyed running through the mechanics! NPCs seem very strong: 7d6k5 attack is better than most knights we face along with 6 Base Damage (Athletics 5? Or Long Blades 3 and using a Bastard sword? Plus CD is Athletics 4, Awareness 3, Agility 3 plus superior Full Plate or normal full plate plus one of those abilities at 4? Just seems a step up in difficulty for NPCs and makes the maths tough, as with Roland's own combat event where NPC health of 10 rather than more standard Endurance 3 = 9 health really throws off the maths of lots of weapons.]

The hero action option was on the rough side since those mooks are from the elite men at arms unit, sent to respond to wherever the fighting is thickest. It's somewhat tricky to calibrate challenges, so future mechanics may start with a relatively low baseline and either have an option to take on greater risk for greater rewards, or have increasingly more challenging waves like this one, experimenting back and forth with stuff.
Anyway: -Defeating the reinforcements: -5 Blackwood Strength, 2 points of Bracken War Crimes. -Harrassing the enemy: +1 glory to Balon and Daeron (a great deal more to Aubrey, if NPC's could collect such). -Blackwood casualties noted.

[OOC: thanks for getting back. Escalation is a bit more work for you but I like the escalation idea for letting a range of character types contribute. Maybe a hybrid character contributes a bit via such a scene and a bit from his scheming/spying etc brining in allies, while a purer fighter type has to try to go deep in escalating challenges to make the same contribution to their side. Agree on calibrating being hard, so I'll try to be faster in playtesting and giving mechanical feedback!
Also, bravo Balon, Daeron and indeed Aubrey!]

Yeah, Robb got the glory as commander, and I think Daeron didn't manage the glory requirement for that battle?
