Knights rides forth as is custom before any major battle in Westeros, at least in the parts where the Andal traditions holds sway, though it is hardly unheard of in places where the Seven Pointed Star is but a little twinkle in the firmament, occasionally just as common as in these lands were it burns brightly indeed. One after another, those wishing to make a name for themselves, to win ransoms and glory, while one could wait until the battle proper, many are eager to test their mettle man against man, or be certain that ransom and glory will be theirs. Battles can be chaotic, and rivals might stake a claim to one's accomplishments, and such victories are hardly ever neat and clean. While morale can be affected positively for the victor's side, gruff and serious commanders frown upon the practice.
Challenges:
PC's may ride against one of the following in single combat prior to the battle (or one another), their combat rank is noted next to their name:
-Blackwood challengers of note: Jasper Flowers (9), Dennis Hightower (11), Aerion Baratheon (17), Roland Crakehall (10), Rhys Daverhyl (15), Tommard Heddle (9), Arlan of Pennytree (4.5).
-Bracken challengers of note: Redtusk (15), Steffon Whent (8), Ser Stannis Mandrake (4), Ser Cuthbert Mandrake (4), Byren Flowers (15), Gareth the Gray (14).
-An opposed Audience test may be needed in case of conflict.
-Only special NPC's will be featured.
Consequences:
-Fighting a duel prevents full participation in the war council.
-Fatigue, injuries and wounds carries over into the battle, any duel fought will occur on the same day as other act 3 events.
-Characters listed here not featured in the campaign will not feature in the battle, but are added for the sole purpose of offering a wider range of available opponents than otherwise would be the case.
-Defeating a knight: Gain +1b to "commanding presence" tests for hero action during the main battle.
-Defeating a knight whose rank is within 20% of yours (equal): +2 glory, +1 glory if a draw is offered and accepted.
-Defeating a knight whose rank is more than 20% of yours (greater): +4 glory, +2 glory if a draw is offered and accepted.
-Defeating a knight whose rank is between 50% and 80% of yours: +1 glory
-Target opponent's horse: -3 Chivalry.
-Use vicious weapons (other than war lance): -1 Chivalry.
-Refusing a knight's surrender: -1 chivalry.
-Refusing to pay ransom (at the earliest opportunity): -1 chivalry
-Demand minimum rate of ransom: +1 Disposition with defeated knight, if demanding no or symbolic ransom, also gain +1 with his house.
-Demand maximum rate of ransom: -2 Disposition with defeated knight and his house.
Combat rank:
Fighting: +4 per rank above 4.
Awareness/Agility/Animal Handling: +1 per rank above 3
Athletics/Endurance: +2 per rank above above 3.
+1 rank for each of the following: Armor Mastery, Talented (Fighting), Shield Mastery, Tough, Water Dancer II, Blood of the Rhoynar, Lucky*, Long Blade Fighting I&II, Blood of the Andals*, Pious*, Fury.
*If the daily bonus already has been used prior to the duel or you voluntarily disavow it's availability for use, this does not count.
Consideration for Qualities:
-Gain +2 to self-control tests to avoid challenging a knight per warfare rank you have above 3.
-Gain +1 to self-control tests to avoid challenging a knight if you have rank 2 or higher in at least one warfare specialty.
Avaracious: Attempts to compel taking maximum ransom.
Furious: A simple intrigue is made against you (at 4D+2) to attempt to compel answering a challenge.
Nemesis:
-Otho Bracken would surely push aside any opponent Mikel would ordinarily face if he was here, but he is not.
-Walgrave Oakheart will likely ensure that Davos would have to face the toughest opponent available if he rides forth.
Prejudiced:
-Attempts to compel challenging a knight on the trigger list.
-Attempts to compel refusing to accept or offer a draw to such a character.
-Attempts to compel refusing to accept the surrender of such a character (only applies on critical failure)
Proud:
-Consider yourself challenged.
-Roland is also treated as having been challenged to accept 1 GD in ransom for Redtusk if dulling him (separate test, will suffer -2 disposition if he backs down)
Vainglorious:
-Attempts to compel challenging a knight of equal or greater rank, on a critical failure, you must challenge one of greater rank (highest ranked option if not applicable.)
-Attempts to compel refusing to accept or offer a draw, except against a character of greater rank (on a critical failure, not even those).
Vindictive:
-Attempts to compel challenging a knight on the trigger list.
-Attempts to compel refusing to accept or offer a draw to such a character.
-Attempts to compel refusing to accept the surrender of such a character (only applies on critical failure)
In case of conflict, any critical failure, then the choice(s) checking off the most boxes takes precedence, player choice otherwise.
