After the hunt Balon returned to the castle to have his injury treated before the feast. He sucked in air through gritted teeth as the maester poured firemilk onto the gash the boar's tusks had left. "Fuck that burns." Balon complained to the unsympathetic maester. When he was bandaged up Balon stood and rotated his torso to see what his body would allow. "Are you sure nothing will soak through? I'll be wearing my best clothing tonight and the last thing I need is blood seeping through while I'm trying to impress people." The eye roll from the maester was all Balon got as a response.
Later that evening Balon arrived to the feast in his best attire looking to impress his peers. His hair and full goatee were neatly trimmed and he'd spent considerable time removing all the dirt from underneath his fingernails. In honor of Hose Peake he wore an orange tunic with black trim and his right breast bore his personal sigil Laena had designed for him at Whitewalls. While the pigs were being roasted Balon made a point to speak with several young knights of note. Ser Abelar Hightower was talkative and Balon again offered his condolences on his father's passing. Balon made no attempt to mention the regency but instead talked about marriages and the value of alliances in the troubling times ahead. He segued into Lynesse and what a beautiful and intelligent woman she was becoming. "Whomever marries her is set for life. Devoted, loyal, caring. Everything you could ever ask for." Balon dropped not so subtle hints that Abelar should inquire about her availability.
Next was Ser Preston Oakheart and Lord Walgrave. He spoke highly of Preston and Titus' display of skill in the Whitewalls melee. "Oakheart and Blackbriar knights. I don't think even the Redwynes could stop such a combination!" He laughed and toasted Ser Preston. Balon knew of Delia's desire to become the lady of Old Oak and Balon wanted to see that come to fruition. Motioning for Lady Delia to join the trio Balon began to talk of marriage. The ground work had already been laid and Balon seemed to possess an insight he rarely displayed. Not only did he thoroughly convince Lord Walgrave it appeared that Ser Preston was wholeheartedly in agreement. "I speak for Ser Titus, young Vortimer, and myself when I say we look forward to calling you good-brother." Even Lady Delia, a woman with a mouth so sour that she could give Lord Gormon a run for his money left the conversation with a giddy demeanor.
The last knight he focused on was Ser Simon Tarly. House Tarly had yet to declare for a faction and Balon had heard a rumor that Gormon was preparing to offer Lady Tanda's hand to Simon as the first step to bringing the Tarlys over to Fire. After a few drinks Balon changed the topic. "Ugly business between you and Ser Roland (Cordwayner). Tell me what started this rivalry?" Balon listened and asked questions but didn't excessively pry. An enemy of an enemy could turn into a friend if played right and Balon had use of as many friends as he could make. "I apologize if I speak out of turn but the Dornish were our enemy and our enemy they should return. As a house within the marches you must surely agree? Assassins and people who piss on our traditions if you ask me."
When knights and lords started making speeches Balon was no different. Following in the footsteps of Gormon, Balon pleaded that everything that could be done, should be to see the Warrior Reborn take then throne. "Some might think our methods harsh but history will judge us correct. Those who support King Daeron already struck the first blow with the cowardly assassination of Lord Jon Hightower. Eye for an eye; that is how we honor him."
As the night wore on Balon focused on bringing people together. Balon introduced Fireball to Ser Abelar Hightower as it was becoming clear that he was to be the linchpin that the regency of House Hightower hung upon. Showcasing a knight of Fireball's caliber was important. Not only was he an exemplary knight he knew Lord Jon from his time at King's Landing and undoubtedly could share insight on Jon's life and passions. Later Balon took Ser Preston aside and asked him to meet Lord Gormon. Gormy had received a lot of negative attention but Balon assured Preston that it was undeserved. If he'd be willing to go over and talk with Gormon he'd see that he is exactly what a Reachman should be. Wise, just, cunning, and a great warrior that personified the Andal way.
Lastly, Balon and Lynesse spoke at length with Daena and Ellyn Roxton. Unfortunately Lord Owen hadn't attended but there was a rumor that if anyone was to gain Lady Daena's hand they needed the approval of Daena and her sister. Balon turned on his smile and charming ways and didn't mention anything negative. Nothing bad about Dorne, half-breeds running throughout the Reach, or the coming war between loyalist and rebel. All he did was talk up his brother Titus and his positive qualities. His gallantry at Highgarden, his refusal to die, how he scoffed at the maesters when they questioned if he'd ever walk again. His Blackbriar fortitude was amazing and that endurance translated to *everything*. Not only was he a hero he was an accomplished tourney knight. Just think of all the crowns of love and beauty he could win for the right lady. When the Roxton girls were sufficiently thrilled with the image of Titus, Balon had Titus come over and talk with them. His only advice was a whisper, "Don't fuck this up."
