The hour was late, but that only accounted for part of Roland's blindness. He was too caught up in the gravity of the moment and following the famous Septon's guidance to cast his eyes around Abelar's cell.

At least the cursed thing would fit under his armour, and he had only himself to curse for this situation. Septon Abelar was simply doing the Seven's will, helping Roland from straying too far from the faith.
Lacking in self consciousness from his earlier encounter with the Septon and countless hours training, Roland stripped off his tunic to don his penitence, swiftly covering the ill-fitting garment with his Starling colours.
Later that evening the shirt would chafe and rub as he escorted Arya Flowers back to camp, adding injury to a gathering that had began promisingly and ended most uncomfortably.
