Roland nodded, determined to follow Laena's counsel. He was particularly enthusiastic at the talk of the Seven's judgement and the need to protect Andal culture.
"I shall endeavour to oppose such behaviour by words and if necessary deeds. Some lessons are best reinforced at the tip of a tourney lance."
"My lady, as for your question, Lord Starling is loyal to King Daeron. He too fought against the Dornish, but you will not hear Ser Balon's wild accusations from his lips. He is a true knight. If you have heard him speak well of Ser Daemon, it is in as much as I might speak well of Lord Tyrell's knightly virtues or indeed Ser Daemon's. Both men are worthy of praise, but that does not mean I would press their claim as King. Indeed Lord Tyrell would only regard achieving such a rank as an imposition against honing his martial skills, and I imagine Lord Starling would feel similarly! While lady Starling may be beyond the age to bear our Lord a son, I am confident Lady Lysette's choice of husband shall underline our house's commitment to the Throne. She would not marry some schemer or his son that would seek to turn the companions against our King."
"Many of the men of the Companions naturally esteem Ser Daemon, he is the exemplar of much that we strive for in both skill and honour. For my own part I share that opinion, even if his professed supporters, the dogs Otho and Balon, disgust me."
Briefly, Roland forgets his etiquette and strips both men of the knightly courtesies they ill-deserve.
A pause and Roland swallows.
"Some of my brothers may have extended this admiration to keeping ill-company with agitators like Ser Quentyn Ball and Ser Aegor Rivers, but have spoken no treason yet. I shall be watchful, but have no wish to swiftly cast aside bonds forged by shared service for the sake of a hunt and old friendships."
