Mikel was further back with the others. They kept themselves hidden as well as they could, and far enough back to where if they weren't as well hidden as they hoped they probably wouldn't be seen anyways. They had watch posts out on all sides though, and were keeping an eye on Davos and Robyn. Ambushes were true test of discipline. As the time drug on it became hard to continue paying attention, and hard to maintain the original confidence in the plan. You began to suspect everything would go wrong, and it had already in fact failed. He checked that his sword was loosed in his scabbard for the hundredth time, then the angle of his dagger. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath and let it out slowly, and another, and another. Then his eyes opened and he continued waiting.

The tension already felt thick on the air clings far more heavily once the scouts confirms the location of the enemy, once the command is given, there will be no turning back. And with the fighting at The Red Fork fresh in memory, everyone knows that once blood is drawn, there will be surprises for everybody.
Ambushing the Ambushers:
Commmander makes the following tests: -Strategy and Tactics may be done at a distance (i.e. by one not with the troops), with -1b training penalty to Strategy and -1D penalty to tactics. -Assists cannot be done at a distance, NPC's able to assist or test (3D+1B) are available. (Let's ignore coordinate, that'll just make things a little messy)
-Warfare (Strategy) TN 12 -Warfare (Tactics) TN 12 -Warfare (Command) TN 12 -Additionally, the force tests Stealth (3D+1B) against TN 12 - assists not possible.
-Success on all tests: Full encirclement and neutralization of enemy force with minimal casualties. -Per failure: 1d6*5% of the enemy force will get away, inflicting some casualties on friendly force (if 90%+ escapes, it will be treated as a critical failure instead), reduce total DoS by 2- -Per total DoS: An NPC can give archery support (4D+1B, Damage 5, Piercing 1) in combat against enemies on the road. -Critical failure on any test: Enemy alerted to trap and successfully escapes.
Showdown on the road:
The leader of any mounted enemy force on the road tests: Awareness (Notice) TN 9 Warfare (Tactics) TN 9 -Success on both tests: Realize what is happening in time to cut and run, gaining an advantage in the chase scene against anyone on the road equal to DoS on lowest test. -Simple failure: Normal combat on the road ensues. -Critical failure: Opponents gains surprise.

Quick Rolls to get the ball rolling: [P4] Amputating the Greenhand: Warfare(Command) TN 12: 5D6.HIGH(4) = [2, 5, 4, 3, 5] = 17 2 DoS [P4] Amputating the Greenhand: Warfare(Strategy, Tactics) TN 12: 4D6 = [4, 6, 2, 1] = 13 4D6 = [5, 5, 1, 1] = 12 1 DoS 1 DoS [P4] Amputating the Greenhand: Stealth TN 12: 4D6.HIGH(3) = [6, 5, 4, 5] = 16 1 DoS 5 DoS Total. Who will roll for the archer?

So with assists, that's 19, 15, 18 for 5 total DoS, all successes. Ambushing army: 4D6.HIGH(3) = [2, 1, 3, 2] = 7
So there was a 6% chance of total failure....what could go wrong did go wrong. Marq Warren realizes what is up?: 3D6 = [4, 2, 3] = 9 3D6 = [3, 5, 6] = 14
So that means a DP to help the friendly forces a little bit (just the +1 from turning bonus die into test die is enough to make it a simple failure, then 5-30% would get away as opposed to everyone) can turn this into a chase scene with the villains starting with 1 advantage (first to 3 if memory serves from rules) as Mikel routes the footmen. No DP...no fun.

All too familiar, Robyn had prepared for the worst and ensured that Mikel and Davos understood just as well as he did what these ambushers would do to succeed. While he greatly overestimated how many there were in the Green Hand's forces, he did not forget just how fast the ambush took place. It was a blink and suddenly there were men all around him.
But his eyes werent focused on those rushing him and Davos, no, it was searching for who he previously called a mountain in armor. Long before he met Otto Bracken this man was who he feared most, and today he would pull him from his mount once again.
As per the Starkwood OOC, Mikel and I will be spending a DP each to ensure that the Ambush goes off without a hitch. He has given permission for me to spend it here for him.

So did we all fail a spot-check since I see a stealth roll in Mikel's post?
In which case, Mikel's DP will not be needed, and Robyn's DP suffices to ensure combat on the road.

So Mikel's DP is cancelled because not needed.
5x Archery support (4D+1B, Damage 5, Piercing 1), DP vs Warren means normal combat.

The rhythmic thumping of hooves seems an eerie silence compared to the rain of arrows that would have greeted them if they were caught unawares instead of having set the trap, broken by the canter of what must be their prey haven been given the signal, although a cautious man would be given pause at the lack of sound of bowstrings being loosened, the small mound in the landscape that was supposed to prevent their presence to be given away too early instead works against them, when they realize they are facing two knights with swords drawn waiting for them instead of ones filled with arrows in need of finishing off, they seem to decide to turn and run, cowardice in the eyes of many knights of summer, wisdom in the eyes of grizzled veterans.
Initiatives (at charging distance): Initiative Marq Warren, 2x hedge knights: 3d6-2 7 2#3d6-3 9 95x Archery support (4D+1B, Damage 5, Piercing 1->Goes last. Enemies: Marq Warren (Courser) 12/12 CD: 11 AR: 7 2x Hedge Knights (Rounseys) 9/9 CD: 10 AR: 7

Mmm, maybe some small modification to scene setup incoming (to PC's benefit), but iniative will be needed either way.

So what seems reasonable enough on second thought: Davos and Robyn (likely not having more than very light armor, shields and swords not to spoil the surprise) and the archers autowins initiative which seems to be the simplest solution to getting what I envisioned. Probably would want the arrows to fly first in that case.

I don't think we ever settled on what kind of armor would be appropriate. I was thinking brigandine, from a distance it would look like a doublet - especially if the rivets were painted or covered by another layer of cloth to prevent reflections. It would be uncomfortably warm, no doubt, but we are expecting an ambush so like in war survival takes precedence over comfort. Here is my initiative without armor factored in: AtGH Initiative (without AP) +5 (WD2) +1 (Sup. Courser): 5d6k4+6 19

I mainly view it based on bulk primarily (and AP a little bit) since names and descriptions are harder to judge, although I have a feeling it's not going to matter too much for the actual fight.

The first sign the blackguards receive that their plan has gone wrong is that the arrows are flying at them and not their quarry, the trap shuts to the screams of wounded horses. 1-9: Horse, 10-12: Man, Marq is 1-3 and 10, #2 is 4-6 and 11: 5#1d12 10 5 11 7 10This was supposed to make them target the horses chiefly...but oh well. 2 shots at Marq, 1 shot at Hedge Knight #1, 1 shot at each hedge knight horse. Aim+shoot; 2marq, hedge knight, horse 1, horse 2: 5#6d6k4 21 17 22 18 17Marq: 3x5 and 2x5 vs AR 7, so 8+3=11 damage. Hedge Knight 1: 3x5 vs AR 7, so 8 damage Horse 1: 10 damage Horse 2: 10 damage Marq Warren (Courser) 1/12 CD: 11 AR: 7 2x Hedge Knights (Rounseys 2/12 and 2/12) 1/9 and 9/9 CD: 10 AR: 7 Lesser TN 9 animal handling required to regain control of mounts. Davos wheels his horse around and charges into the oncoming knights of the Green Hand. The veteran of many battles, it is immediately obvious to him which knight is the leader. That's Marq Warren, no doubt."For Starfall and Dorne! For Starkwood!"As he rides past he slaps the man's sword out of the way with the flat of his blade and on the backswing aims at the unarmored back of Marq's knee. Feeling the satisfying resistance of blade entering flesh, Davos smiles grimy to himself. Even if you escape execution, You won't be walking away from this without those tendons.
Assuming we would not be carrying lances while traveling, this would be a charge with longsword. I might not be remembering the mechanics quite right and I don't have my book at hand, so looking it over for errors or omissions would be appreciated. Fighting 5, 3b Long Blades; 8d6k5 -1D for charge; 8d6k4 +"1b" for talented; 9d6k4 +1 ea for talented, mounted quality, superior weapon; 9d6k4+3 P4 AtGH Charge at Marq, TN 11: 9d6k4+3 24, 3 DoS Athletics 4, +1 for longsword, +1 for superior weapon, +2 for charge = 8 damage per DoS; 24 total for 17 after AR. If we have surprise that's +1D, +2 damage. That would put it up to 4 DoS and 10 damage/DoS for a total of 40... not that it would actually change anything.

There was never a fight to begin with, Ser Marq Warren slumps from his saddle after Davos' blow, and hits the ground as his steed keeps going without him, his companions are either cut down on the spot or try to flee only to be felled by the next volley of arrows.
Marq didn't crit fail (DP only turned things into simple failure), so no surprise bonuses. Doesn't matter, he is defeated. 2x control horsies: 2#5d6k3 15 11They start trying to get away....but they have "slow" Rounseys so good luck with that. 1-3 Horse 1, 4 Man 1, 5-7 horse 2, 8 man 2: 5#1d8 6 8 7 8 4Aim+shoot, 1x man 1, 2x horse 2, 2x man 2: 5#6d6k4 20 12 11 16 18Hedge Knight 1: 8 damage->Dead Horse 2: 5+5 dmage->Dead Hedge Knight 2: 3+3 damage=3/9, but horse dead. hedge knight leaps clear?: 5d6k3 15. Didn't get crushed by his horse, but on foot, half-dead and outnumbered....he surrenders or plays dead. Robyn...does something probably, maybe cut down a hedge knight instead of arrows getting them.
