Though House Redwyne of the Arbor always hosts a grand harvest ball this time of the year, a curiosity as there have been many a moon's turn since the groves, orchards and fields have offered up their bounty. But on this island, it is wine that matters, and the best wine only becomes so after it has properly aged. On the occasion of the first tasting of the most recent vintage, Lord Willem hosts a ball, usually a relatively modest affair, but this year the attendance rivals that expected of a tourney. Even though the weather suggests a particularly promising Arbor Red, it is surely politics rather than thirst that offers the main allure, the Hightowers and Florents are usually represented, Lord Durwell rarely misses the event, but when Lady Rhonda has seen fit to arrive with near as all ladies in waiting at Highgarden, a great many young and unwed knights follow on their trails, and Peake's, Rowans and Fossoways sees fit to join. Butterbumps reportedly would have been in attendance if he had kept himself from remarking about the heifer's trotting off to the cattleshow and adding that if the prize hog of Longtable were to come too, it would be a proper harvest fair. While the opinions of the dwarf remains mixed, there are none who particularly misses Lord Eldon's presence.

Deliver insult
-If one decides not to come, one may opt to go out of one's way to announce it, inflicting 3 points of negative support per status rank and optionally +1 Blood, you may expect Redtusk to be particularly eager to face you in future tournaments (or alternatively, your champion or other proxy), -2 Disposition with House Redwyne.
-If present and intent on spoiling the mood you gain no positive approval and all support gained is negative support. Suffer -1 Disposition with House Redwyne. For each -5 Support obtained, you suffer -1 Disposition with House Redwyne and optionally gain +1 Blood. Depending on your choices, Redtusk might opt to challenge you to a duel on the spot rather than wait for a chance to humiliate you in a tourney.
Approval
Each character enters this event with base approval equal to their chivalry/virtue score, modified by qualities as noted below, and it may be modified by happenings at the event, for each full 10 points of approval at a given stage in this event grants +1 to all tests marked with an *. However, each full 5 points of negative approval at a given stage in this event inflicts -1 on all these tests. Each full 4 points of bonus is converted into +1D, any leftover full 2 points becomes +1b, a lone +1 remains +1. Each full -4 of penalty inflicts -1D, any leftover full -2 inflicts -1b (as training penalty) and a lone -1 remains -1.
Supporting Lady Rhonda
Lord Redwyne intends to build support for his sister, and he uses the ball to this end. All support gained through the event will be tallied up and turned into votes for Lady Rhonda in the Hightower regency, exactly how this works is yet to be determined as it needs to fit into other mechanisms.
Secrets
During the event, characters may learn "secrets", though each of these on their own are mostly just gossip and hearsay that aren't very interesting to anyone, each such snippet one obtains increases the odds of something of value is learned. At the end of the event, each character is granted a pool of dice equal to the amount of secrets they have obtained, and may divide it up as they see fit over a number of tests all against TN 9, each DoS grants knowledge that can be shared with a randomly determined NPC participant to be owed a minor favor from them, a plot hook regarding this NPC will be offered instead if possible (the narrator is open to suggestions from players).
Stage 1: Presentation is everything.
The guests are announced in order of precedence, the head of house tests as "Lord", immediate family (wife, sons, brothers and their spouses and unwed sisters and daughters, daughters that are heirs with their spouses also counts) takes this result, in the absence of the head of house, the highest ranking member of the affected group that is present may test, others tests individually as "guests".
Audience* TN 21 (Lords), TN 12 (Guests).
-Critical failure: -10 approval.
-Success: Gain two action points for stage 3.
-Per additional DoS: Gain one additional action point for stage 3.
-Lords (and any taking their results): Four additional action points on stage 3 in addition to any gained from high DoS.
Fashion Statement:
-Ladies may dress daringly, gaining +1b on Seduction tests and +3 approval, however, the extra attention to oneself adds +2 TN to conceal one's activities or to the tests for those inclined to keep tabs on them.
-Anyone may attempt Status (Breeding)* TN 15, gaining +3 approval per DoS for being the center of attention, but each DoS also adds +1 TN to conceal one's activities or to the tests for those inclined to keep tabs on them.
-Critical failure: -10 approval.
--The modifiers to detection tests stacks so that each full 4=+1D, remaining full 2=+1b.
Stage 2: Wine tasting
You may take as many servings of wine as you please, gaining +1 approval per serving taken.
-Test chance TN 7 for each. (Multiple servings from the same batch only counts for getting drunk)
--Critical Failure: A foul taste in the mouth, will (dedication) TN 12 to keep a stiff upper lip, simple failure: -2 Approval, -1 support, Critical failure: -5 Approval, -3 support).
--Simple Failure: Average for the Arbor.
--1 DoS: A fine vintage, gain +1 approval.
--2 DoS: Simply divine, gain +2 approval.
For the purposes of determining alcohol attacks, 5 minutes passes between the last serving taken here and stage 3, and each stage lasts an hour. Penalty dice inflicted remains in effect for the rest of the event. Passing out ends your involvement in this event and inflicts -1 Chivalry, ladies suffer -2 virtue per penalty die inflicted.
(IC, one would probably drink throughout the evening).
You may ignore a -1D from the alcohol in exchange for each of the following you accept (this does not prevent passing out or worse), a choice is only valid if it has consequences:
-Fail all self-control tests (must still test to see if it becomes a critical failure).
-Critically fail all self-control tests (stacks with the above for a total of -2D removed).
-Temporarily gain a drawback for the remainder of the event (narrator approval required).
-The Narrator is open to creative suggestions.
Stage 3: The Reception
-Each character has 3 action points, plus any obtained during stage 1, one may also obtain an additional 3 from a stage 5 choice.
-To take any of the below actions costs 3 points.
-Action Points may also be used to grant +1b to all non-chance tests of a given action (may stack up to the limits of bonus die allowed on any test).
-Each action can be taken multiple times, but at a cumulative +1 to all non-chance TN's of that action type, an additional +2 for targeting the same character.
Meet and Mingle
-Status (Breeding) TN 9*
-Simple Intrigue (Charm) TN 12*
-Per Critical Failure: -5 Approval.
-Per 2 DoS (sum up across all actions): +1 Support, +1 Secret
-Success on both tests: +1 Support, +1 Secret, +2 Approval
Eavesdrop.
-Deception (Act) or Stealth (Blend in) TN 9, a success allows the next test to be performed.
-Awareness (Notice) TN 12* test, gain 3 Secrets per DoS.
-Per Critical Failure: -5 Approval.
-You may target a named character (using the highest of their passive awareness (notice) or their passive status(reputation)-5 as the TN for the first test and their passive cunning(logic) as the TN for the second test), the secret points gained can be used to roll specifically for knowledge applying to that character (they count as normal points if mixed together with dice not earmarked for this individual).
Flirtation.
-Simple Intrigue (Seduction) TN 12*
-Optional Awareness (Empathy) TN 9 for +1 per DoS on the chance test, critical failure: Loss of confidence and action is wasted.
--Chance TN 8
---Critical failure on seduction or chance test: -5 Approval and -1 Chivalry or -3 virtue.
---Success on chance test: +2 Secrets per Seduction DoS. +3 Approval, +1 disposition with NPC flirted with (to a max of +5)
---Ordinarily, this will not go beyond the occasional pair of flushed cheeks, but initial success may offer the promise of more than that.
----You may target a named character, in this case, the seduction is against their regular intrigue defense (minimum 12) and awareness against passive deception (act), both are treated as at most 12 for determining critical failure.
----Note that named characters may have the chance test result automatically set to 2, 7 or 12, Success on awareness will let you know if it is set to 2 and you may then abort.
Gossip.
-Status (Breeding) TN 9*
-Knowledge (Streetwise) TN 9*
-Simple Intrigue TN 12*
-Critical failure: -5 approval
-Success on all tests: +2 Approval, +2 support, +2 secrets.
--Gain +1 Support per Status DoS, +1 Secret per Streetwise DoS, add a rumor to the list of random ones that other may discover (and sometimes rolled against to see which will be made public) if successful on intrigue.
Stage 4: A personal touch.
One may attempt to engage a specific NPC for a little manipulation, typically something of relatively minor scope such as encouraging specific choices to be taken during the event or perhaps planting an idea or strategically divulge information in the hope that the NPC might come to certain conclusions and/or take desired action in the future.
Any required tests to be determined based on what is attempted.
Stage 5: The bell
The master of ceremonies sounds the signal for the commencement of the feast, one might file in promptly or take one's time.
One may optionally attempt to be fashionably late, all who attempt this gains +3 Action points during Stage 3.
Cunning (Breeding)+Status+Reputation TN 21*
-On a success, the results from stage 6 and 7 will be considerably stronger than otherwise (rule of thumb: quantifiable results are increased by a factor of +25% per DoS)
-Highest total successful result: Treat the outcome as if you had doubled your degrees of success.
-Critical failure, actually late: -10 Approval
Stage 6: Trend-setting.
One may optionally attempt to set the tone for future events by commenting on novel styles of gowns, hairstyles or any particular act or mannerism. One might also try and set such an example for others to follow. Any effects will largely be outside the scope of this event and subject to narrator ability to weave into future stories. It may be possible to vilify others for their "lack of taste".
Any required tests to be determined based on what is attempted.
Stage 7: Playing politics.
Audience TN 15*
Simple Intrigue (typically convince, but other techniques may also be relewant) TN 15*
Awareness (Empathy) TN 12*
Cunning (Logic) TN 12*
-Success on all tests: Double the number of DoS for determining effects.
-A critical failure will be treated as permission for the narrator to get creative.
-You may additionally make a Deception (Act) TN 9 test to attempt to conceal your schemes from prying eyes and ears, you may not achieve more DoS on any other tests than you do on this one. A score of 13 is required to avoid notice by casual observers, while to avoid the notice of an NPC specifically targeted is resolved against the highest of their passive awareness (notice) or their passive status(reputation)-5 as the TN. This will cancel any disposition effects towards you from people unaware of your efforts.
Potential applications (must be marked in rolls):
Support Rhonda (convince): Add +DoS in support to Lady Rhonda, +1 disposition from House Redwyne (to max +5).
Denounce Target (incite): Reduce the disposition of a number of NPC's whose combined status ranks can be at most 4*DoS against chosen target by -1. Target disposition towards you: -3.
Support Faction (convince): Gain +1 rumor DoS towards a faction point per each 4 full DoS, -1 disposition from House Redwyne.
Praise Target (convince): Raise the disposition of a number of NPC's whose combined status ranks can be at most 3*DoS towards chosen target by +1.
Socialize (charm): Gain +1 disposition towards you from a number of NPC's whose combined status ranks can be at most 2*DoS. (To at most 5).
Gather support towards a cause (convince or incite typically): Gain +1 VP per each 4 full DoS towards a complex intrigue objective, -1 disposition from House Redwyne.
--Note that VP's beyond the first from the same source like this have diminishing impact, not all complex intrigues may be applicable.
Other things may be possible to accomplish also.
Rewards:
-Obtain the most approval: 1 Major favor from House Redwyne, 2nd gets 2 minor, 3rd gets 1 minor.
-Collect the most support: 1 Major favor from House Redwyne, 2nd gets 2 minor, 3rd gets 1 minor.
Considerations for Qualities
Note that self-control must be tested for at the stage it is triggered, given that the wine might affect it.
The following qualities grants +5 approval: Anointed, Artist, Authority, Attractive, Blood of the Andals, Blood of Valyria, Charismatic, Courteous, Eloquent, Famous, Graceful, Great Bastard, Head of House, Heir, Respected, Tourney Knight, Sponsor.
The following qualities inflicts -5 approval: Bastard Born, Bound to the Bottle, Ignoble, Promiscuous, Obese, Reviled, Unattractive, Untrustworthy, Nemesis (Walgrave Oakheart).
Attractive:
-You automatically gain the effects of dressing daringly (also applies for men), actually taking that option gives the effects again (The +1b to seduction stacks as +1D) as well as +2 approval per DoS if taking the center of attention option.
-Gain +1D on all tests under Presentation is everything.
Great Bastard:
-May represent their own personal branch of House Targaeryen under Stage 1, so may test as "lord"
-Gain +1D on all tests under Presentation is everything.
Decadent:
-Simply being in attendance allows "House Redwyne" to make a simple (intrigue) charm (4d6) against you, on a success they gain +1 disposition.
-Each serving of "fine" or better vintage triggers the above test again, charm tests triggered by divine vintage gains +1D
-Only disposition increase 1,3,6,10 etc beyond the first counts.
--For each meet and mingle action taken during stage 3, test chance for wine quality again, on a success, a random NPC in attendance will recommend such and such vintage for the tasting, this does not count as a full serving, but triggers the simple intrigue from House Redwyne again as if another serving was taken and the NPC in question may also initiate simple intrigue with the same effects.
Lascivious: If successful at flirting, flag this drawback to the narrator in case one thing leads to another.
Prejudiced: Attempts to compel targeting someone on the trigger list with a "hostile" action.
Vindictive: Attempts to compel targeting someone on the trigger list with a "hostile" action.
